Abstract

Stroke patients often experience difficulty performing daily activities, including maintaining oral hygiene, due to muscle weakness and reduced strength. In hospitals, oral hygiene efforts tend to focus on patients with medical devices like feeding tubes, while conscious patients are often overlooked. This issue is worsened by the inconsistency of nurses in providing oral hygiene care and the lack of knowledge among family members on how to perform it in bed. Therefore, education for patients and families is essential. Flipcharts and leaflets can be effective tools, tailored to the patient's condition. This paper aims to provide nursing care through oral hygiene education for Mrs. L, a stroke patient. A case report method was used, involving pre- and post-tests with a questionnaire to assess knowledge and skills, along with oral hygiene status (OHI-S). Education was delivered over 20 minutes using a flipchart, followed by a demonstration from the nurse and a re-demonstration by the family. Results showed improvements: knowledge increased from 73% to 93%, skills from 60% to 93%, and OHI-S improved from 3.16 (poor) to 2.1 (sufficient). It is expected that nurses continue bedside education, and that patients and families can apply oral hygiene practices well.

Abstract

Medication administration errors continue to be a significant concern in patient safety, including among nursing professional students. This study aimed to analyze factors related to the implementation of the seven rights of medication administration among professional nursing students at Universitas Andalas. This quantitative study used a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach and involved 114 nursing professional students. Data were collected using questionnaires including ASPAM, and researcher-developed questionnaires were tested for validity using Pearson Correlation and reliability using Cronbach’s alpha, showing that all items are valid and reliable. Statistical analysis included univariate, bivariate, and multivariate tests, used Pearson Product-Moment correlation and multiple linear regression tests.  The findings indicated that students generally had high knowledge and motivation levels (mean= 13,44 and 47,73), along with positive attitudes (mean= 66,74), and good implementation practices (mean= 117,11). There were significant relationships between knowledge (p= 0,001), attitudes (p=0,000), and motivation (p=0,000) with implementation, and attitude identified as the most dominant factor. These findings highlight the need to strengthen patient safety attitudes through clinical learning strategies such as case studies and simulations, to improve students’ self-awareness, and to develop attitude-based interventional research to enhance the implementation of the seven rights of medication administration.

Abstract

Career ladder systems are an important mechanism in supporting the professional development of nurses and have been implemented in various models in a number of countries. Effective management support is critical to the successful implementation of career ladder systems in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the description of management support in the implementation of career ladder system in Local Government Hospitals. This study is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design conducted in May-June 2024. The study population was all nurses who applied for competency assessment and credentialing/recredentialing as many as 76 people who also became samples with total sampling technique. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics including frequency distribution and percentage. These questionnaires have undergone validity and reliability testing, with Cronbach's alpha values of 0.905 for the Management Support Questionnaire and 0.927 for the Nursing Career Path Questionnaire. The results showed that the majority of executive nurses were female (92%) with vocational education (84%) and were in early adulthood (26-35 years old). Most of them had between 8 to 15 years of service and almost half of them were at the Pre PK level (43%). Management support in implementing career ladders was mostly categorized as good (54%). This study concludes that management support in the implementation of the career ladder system in Local Government Hospitals is mostly good, but there are still some aspects that need to be improved. Optimal management support includes the provision of adequate resources, structured training programs, and continuous feedback to ensure the successful implementation of the career ladder system.

Abstract

Low knowledge and competence in implementation are thought to be the cause of the low quality of nursing care. Paul's model of critical thinking training is carried out to improve the quality of nursing care. The aim of the research is to analyze the influence of Paul's model of critical thinking training on the knowledge and competence of nurses in implementing nursing care. The research used a quasi-experimental approach with a pre-test and post-test nonequivalent control group design, the sample size was 33 intervention groups and 33 control groups with a purposive sampling technique. Bivariate analysis used the Wilcoxon and Mann Whitney tests because the data distribution was not normal. The research results showed that the average knowledge in the intervention group increased by 32% and the average skills increased by 48%, while in the control group the average knowledge and skills only increased by 24%. There was a significant difference between the intervention group after training and the control group given the module (p < 0,05). There is an influence of Paul's model of critical thinking training and modules on knowledge and skills (p < 0,05). Paul's model of critical thinking training can increase nurses' knowledge and skills in implementing nursing care

Abstract

One crucial aspect of the professional development of nurse supervisors involves their sociodemographic characteristics, which can significantly impact their knowledge and skills in collaborative communication. This study aims to analyze the sociodemographic contributions of nurse supervisors to knowledge and collaborative communication skills, based on King’s Theory, within Type C Regional Hospitals in West Sumatra. The research methodology employed a crosstab-chisquare approach, with a sample consisting of 24 nurse supervisors. Supervisor education level showed a significant relationship with supervisor knowledge and skills (p < 0.05). The contribution of work period to supervisor knowledge and skills was also significant (p < 0.05. However, the age of the supervisor did not have a significant relationship with supervisor knowledge and skills with p>0.05. It is expected that hospital management can develop supervisor collaborative communication training based on King's theory on an ongoing basis focus on improving collaborative communication skills, especially for supervisors with shorter work periods or lower education levels.
