Abstract

Effective learning should promote active student participation and foster a conducive classroom environment. However, preliminary observations revealed that science instruction, particularly on the topic of the Human Respiratory System, remained dominated by discussion methods and task assignments at the end of the lesson. To address this issue, a more interactive learning model is required—one that enhances student engagement—such as the Cooperative Gallery Walk model. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Cooperative Gallery Walk model in science learning at Islamic junior high schools (MTs) and its impact on students’ learning outcomes. A descriptive quantitative method was employed, utilizing pre-test and post-test instruments for data collection. The data were analyzed using the N-gain formula to determine improvements in students’ understanding of the human respiratory system. The results showed a significant increase in students’ average test scores from 25.55 (pre-test) to 89.44 (post-test). The N-gain score of 0.842 (high category) indicates that the Cooperative Gallery Walk model is highly effective in enhancing students’ conceptual understanding. Thus, the implementation of this model has a positive effect on improving student learning outcomes in science education, especially in the subject matter of the human respiratory system.

Abstract

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)-based learning is designed to enhance 21st-century competencies in students through interdisciplinary integration and project-based activities. This study examines the implementation of fermentation experiments as a STEM learning medium in the Biology Education (Tadris Biologi) course at Universitas Muhammadiyah Aceh. Fermentation experiments (such as making tempeh or yogurt) involve microbial biology concepts (roles of yeast/bacteria) and chemical reactions (conversion of sugars into ethanol or acids), thus enabling the integration of science and mathematics in real-world contexts. The research employed a quasi-experimental design involving undergraduate students of Biology Education. Data were collected through pre- and post-learning concept tests, laboratory activity observations, and questionnaires measuring 21st-century skills (4Cs). The results showed a significant improvement in students’ conceptual understanding of fermentation and in their critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills. Students actively posed critical questions regarding biochemical changes during fermentation and demonstrated enhanced teamwork and creativity in designing experiments. Overall, the fermentation experiments effectively bridged microbial biology and chemical reaction concepts while strengthening 21st-century skills, in line with previous research findings. This study implies that STEM integration through fermentation experiments can improve science literacy among Biology Education students and is recommended for higher education curricula.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the use of learning models on understanding concepts and students' motivation in invertebrate concept in class X at SMA Negeri 1 Sukamakmur. The research method used in this study is a survey method. The subjects in this study were biology teachers who teach in class X and students in class X at SMA Negeri 1 Sukamakmur. The instruments used in this study were questionnaires and interviews. Questionnaires were used to obtain data on student responses about student learning motivation in invertebrate concept. Interviews were conducted to obtain information about the using of learning models in invertebrate concepts used by teachers. The data collection technique was carried out by distributing questionnaires to class XI students to find out student responses regarding student learning motivation in invertebrate concept. Then interviews were conducted with the teacher to get answers from the teacher by means of one-sided questions and answers regarding the learning model used by the teacher in studying invertebrate concept. The data obtained were then analyzed descriptively. Based on the results of data analysis, it is known that the learning model used by the teacher when teaching invertebrate concept is Jigsaw. However, the learning model has not been able to improve students' conceptual understanding, this can be seen from the average score obtained by students which is still far below the minimum completeness criteria (KKM) that has been set by the teacher, namely with an average value of only 31. Meanwhile, the results of the analysis The questionnaire shows that 53% of students are motivated to learn and 47% of students are not motivated to learn about invertebrate concept. Almost half of the total number of students are not motivated in learning From the results of the study it can be concluded that not all learning models are suitable for use in every concept. This can be seen from the scores obtained by students who have not yet reached the KKM and the learning model used by the teacher has not been able to increase students' motivation in studying invertebrate concept.
