Abstract

With the rise of globalization, digitization, and the emergence of the fourth industrial revolution, meaning-making modes are now increasingly multimodal in which written linguistics modes of meaning interface with oral, visual, audio, gestural, tactile, and spatial patterns of meaning. In the EFL context, this situation unavoidably urges changes in the goal of English language teaching to include multimodal communicative competence. In response to such challenges, multiliteracies pedagogy offers plausible solutions. In a multiliteracies classroom, students are supported through a pedagogy that provides them with ample opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills to multimodally examine diverse information sources and content, critically explore the information, and become active meaning-makers and effective communicators. This study aims at investigating the implementation of multiliteracies pedagogy in English language teaching to foster students’ multimodal communicative competence. This is a qualitative case study involving twenty students of the English language department of IAIN Curup. The data of the study are gained through observation, interviews, and students’ artefacts.  The data collected from these instruments were examined qualitatively using thematic and categorical coding. The result of this study demonstrates the enactment of multiliteracies pedagogy can develop five competences of multimodal communicative competence: linguistic competence, sociocultural competence, interactional competence, discourse competence, and multimodal competence. Meanwhile the other two competences, strategic competence and formulaic competence, are somewhat hindered due to lack of exposure to authentic English language.

Abstract

Abstract

Learning styles have become a growing issue in the pedagogical area and have been explored by many studies in recent years. The concepts and theories of learning styles could have significant implications for designing teaching instruction. Thus, this study aims to identify students’ learning styles preferences and their perspectives on learning styles in the English learning context. Particularly, it investigates students’ choices of learning styles and how they perceive their learning styles in learning practice. It was conducted in the survey research using VAK Learning Styles Self-Assessment Questionnaire, followed by some open-ended and close-ended questions to see students’ perspectives on Learning Styles involving 44 respondents. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis. Results indicate that students’ learning styles varied, but the highest percentage, 39 percent of students preferred to learn through visuals. Related to students’ perspectives, most of them were quite aware of their learning style, but unfortunately, 45.5 percent of them stated that their English learning was not yet suitable with their learning style; this can be a reflection for all of us. With all these results, this study was expected to give little information and description related to students’ learning styles preferences and perspectives.

Abstract

EFL students have a big problem called reluctance. Reluctance is students’ unwillingness or disinclination to speak and participate in classroom activities. This research attempts to determine how much each of the three factors affects students’ reluctance to speak English in classroom interactions and which is the most dominant. A descriptive quantitative method was used in this research. A questionnaire was used to collect data. This research analysed the data using version 25 of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, abbreviated as the SPSS program. The result showed that the weighted average of the proportions of the three factors was 2.66, 2.58, and 2.39, respectively, for psychological, language-related, and socio-cultural factors. It can be concluded that the psychological factor (lack of motivation) was the main factor that affected students’ reluctance to speak in English. Because of that, the students should maintain their high motivation to improve their speaking ability. Additionally, teachers should employ various strategies to create an engaging learning or activity environment that can motivate students.
