Abstract

Physical education plays an essential role in the development of gross motor skills in early childhood. Physical activity helps children improve gross motor skills and reduces the risk of health problems; therefore, physical education programs play a significant role in supporting their growth and development. This study aims to examine the impact of physical education programs on the gross motor development of 5 6-year-old children at Bunda Kandung Kindergarten. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and documentation. The research subjects were two informants: the principal and the classroom teacher. To ensure data validity, the researcher employed triangulation of sources. Data analysis was conducted using Miles and Huberman's model, which comprises three main stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results showed that the physical education program was not running optimally, as evidenced by low child participation, a limited variety of physical activities, and limited supporting facilities. These findings emphasize the need for a comprehensive evaluation and development of physical education programs to enhance their effectiveness in promoting gross motor development in early childhood.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the practice of Didong as a form of body music and its role in the enculturation process of Gayo children in Central Aceh Regency, Indonesia. It focuses on informal social spaces where children play with their peers. To analyze how body-based Didong becomes a medium of enculturation through musical experiences and spontaneous social interactions, an ethnographic-based qualitative approach is used. Data were collected through participatory observation and informal dialogue with children aged 5-10 years who practice Didong. The results reveal that rhythmic elements such as tepok tulu, tingkah, and geretek are produced through the technique of clapping both palms together in a collectively organized manner. Through peer imitation mechanisms, children can reproduce musical patterns, which internalize the Gayo cultural identity in an embodied way. Theoretically, this study contributes by deconstructing the understanding of traditional music from merely a formal performance into an autonomous system of enculturation in children's daily lives. These findings confirm that body music functions as a crucial informal pedagogical space for the sustainability of local traditions outside formal educational institutions.

Abstract

Gross motor development is an important aspect of early childhood growth, yet in many early childhood education institutions, motor stimulation remains limited and suboptimal. One potential medium is creative dance based on identity elements, as it can integrate physical movement, rhythm, and creative expression in an enjoyable way. This study aimed to examine the effect of creative dance based on identity elements on the motor development of children at Semayang Ni Ine Bintang early childhood education. The research problem arose because some children were unable to perform gross motor movements in a coordinated and independent manner in response to the teacher’s cues and demonstrations. The method employed a quantitative, experimental design in which the experimental group received a creative dance intervention, and motor skills were measured before and after the intervention. Data analysis using a paired sample t-test showed a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores (p = 0.001 < 0.05), indicating a positive effect of creative dance on children’s motor skills. The study concludes that creative dance based on identity elements is effective in enhancing gross motor development in early childhood. The significance of this research lies in providing an innovative learning model that not only optimizes physical abilities but also encourages creativity and active engagement in the learning process.
