Abstract

One of the most crucial aspects of teaching and learning is the learning material. As a result, teachers must take a variety of steps to ensure that learning materials are successfully presented and that students are happy and focused during teaching and learning activities. This study aims to develop a recount text reading materials based on Banyuwangi local wisdoms for VIII E students of SMPN 3 Banyuwangi and know its feasibility according to material/culture expert and English teacher. This study adopts research and development design based on its aims. The development stages partially taken are need analysis, designing, small group trial, and first revision. The results of development show that the product gained a very feasible level in common based on expert and English teacher’s validation. Therefore, it can be concluded that recount text reading materials based on Banyuwangi local wisdoms can be used in English learning activities in class VIII of SMPN 3 Banyuwangi.

Abstract

There are several skills to master English as international language must be taught in teaching learning process that is listening, speaking, reading and writing. This research explores the experimental research of effectiveness in using talking chips strategy for students’ speaking ability of Eighth B grade at MTs NU Gombengsari in the 2017/2018 academic year. The primary data were taken from pre test and the secondary data were taken from post test. The numbers of respondents are 34 students in the population that uses purposive sampling. The purpose of this research was intended to know the effectiveness of talking chips strategy for students’ speaking ability and to find out the significant different of students speaking ability in vocabulary, pronounciation and independence. In this research, the researcher used the pre test and post test as data collecting method and t-test formula as data analysis. There are 1,65% of the effectiveness of talking chips startegy that had been applied. The degree of value of this research is stated in 32. The result of talking chips strategy is able to increase the achievement of speaking ability. Learning description of speaking ability using talking chips strategy is easier for the students to explore their ideas.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the description of the implementation of Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) in teaching writing descriptive text to the eighth grade students of SMP Sunan Giri 2 Kalipuro in the 2019/ 2020 academic year. In teaching and learning English, there are many strategies used by the teacher. In teaching writing, one of the strategy can be used is Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM). The design of this research is descriptive qualitative. The research was conducted at SMP Sunan Giri 2 Kalipuro, and the subject of the research are the English teacher and 30 students of eight grade of SMP Sunan Giri 2 Kalipuro. The respondents of the research were taken by using purposive sampling. The researcher took the data by using documentation, interview, questionnaire and test. The researcher analyzed the data of questionnaire by using Likert scale and to analyze the students’ writing test by scoring rubric. The result of the intervew to the English teacher showed that the use of media in teaching and learning process could the students more interested to study English in the class, one of the method was the implemented is Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM). The students’ responses indicate that the implementation of Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) were very helpful to them in writing desriptive text. More that 50% of the students agree that the method had many benefits in teaching and learning process. The result of the test also showed a good achievement of the students in writing descriptive text. They get 79,4 in the average and 87% in good interpretation percentage. Therefore, it is recomended that PWIM can be used more often by English teacher in teaching English especially in teaching writing descriptive text.

Abstract

The research design of this study was descriptive. The objective of this thesis was to know the difficulties of the students in using regular and irregular verbs in simple past tense. This research was conducted in SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Banyuwangi in which the respondents were the eighth year students. They were chosen by population technique. The number of respondents in this research was 136 students. In this research, the researcher used a test as the main method of collecting data. To analyze the collected data, the reearcher used percentage method. They are 136 students as the research sample which was taken by using population. It means the Eighth Grade from VIII A to VIII E. Based on the result of the data analysis, it can be known the percentage of the students’ difficulties in using regular and irregular verbs in simple past tense is 47,5%. The number of the students that chose incorrect answer almost equal with the number of the students that chose correct answer. It shows that many students were still having difficulties in using regular and irregular verbs in simple past tense.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a part of English learning in education, the meaning of comprehension is the process of eliciting making meaning thought interaction and involvement with written language. The purpose of this research was to know whether the students taught by using comic strips get better Reading Comprehension of Descriptive text score. The purpose of this research was to know whether the students taught by using comic strips get better Reading Comprehension score of Descriptive text. This research was an experimental research. The type of the research was a pre experimental research. The researcher used one group pretest and posttest design. The respondents of this research were 34 students. Before giving the treatment, the students were given pre-test, and post-test was given after the treatment. The technique of collecting data was a test. The technique of data analysis was T-test formula in order to know the difference between the average of posttest of experimental class and pretest of experimental class. T-test was analyzed and interpreted with the degree of significances 5% with db = 32 and the T-table is 2,021. The results of T-test analysis is 5,27. It means that the T-test ( 5,27 ) is higher than T-table ( 2,021 ) in the significances 5%. From the research finding, it can be concluded that the students taught by using comic strips get better score on reading comprehension of descriptive text. It is suggested for the future researcher to conduct further research on similar area by improving the methodology.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to know the type of lexical relations in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and the most dominant of lexical relation found in the same work. To achieve the objectives, the researcher employs descriptive qualitative method by collecting the randomly sentences of the novel chosen. After collecting and selecting the data, the researcher starts to analyze the words in the sentences by using the theory of lexical relation related to Semantics. The results show that in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland there were 65 utterances of lexical relations. They are 17 utterances of synonyms, 13 utterances of homonym, 5 utterances of hyponyms and 30 utterances of antonyms. It is 17 words of synonyms, 13 words of homonym, 5 words of hyponyms and 34 words of antonyms. By having adequate knowledge on lexical relations, any readers can easily understood the words usage. Furthermore, the researcher finds antonym as the most dominant type, whereas hyponym is the lexical relation type with the least case.

Abstract

Problem-based learning is one of the innovative learning models that can provide active learning conditions. Problem Based Learning uses individual, group, and environmental intelligence to solve problems with the learning process. The purpose of this study was to analyze students' perceptions of problem-based learning model in English learning. This research used qualitative approach of survey type. The data collection technique used a questionnaire. The data from questionnaire was analyzed by using Likert scale. Sampling technique using quota sample, selected 23 students from XII at MAU Nurul Iman. The data analysis determined based on 7 indicators, 1. Student perceptions in terms of student and teacher interaction are in the agree category with a percentage of 67%, 2. Student perceptions in terms of motivation / increasing student learning interest are in the strongly agree category with a percentage of 82%, 3. Student perceptions of competency in understanding course material are in the agree category with a percentage of 67%, 4. Student perceptions of critical, effective and efficient thinking competencies are in the agree category with a percentage of 65%, 5. Student perceptions of good time management competencies are in the strongly agree category with a percentage of 85%, 6. Student perceptions in terms of good student learning outcomes are in the strongly agree category with a percentage of 85%, 7. Student perceptions of the appropriateness of the application of learning models with subject characteristics are in a agree category with a percentage of 67%. All the percentage show that the categories of students’ perception in problem based learning models in english language learning is in “agree” categories.

Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Two Stay-Two Stray technique in improving the speaking skills of tenth-grade students at MAU Al Anwari the academic year 2023-2024. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests to measure changes in students' speaking abilities after the application of the technique. Analysis revealed that most students achieved post-test scores within the 41-60 range, with an average post-test score of 52.38. The T-test analysis showed that the T-test value (13.650) was higher than the T-table value (2.086), indicating that the difference between pre-test and post-test scores was statistically significant. These findings suggest that the Two Stay-Two Stray technique has a significant impact on enhancing students' speaking abilities. The technique not only improved students' speaking skills but also provided a more enjoyable learning experience, supporting student motivation and engagement in the classroom. This result aligns with Warsono and Hariyanto's (2012) view that cooperative learning methods, such as Two Stay-Two Stray, enhance student participation and create a positive learning environment. The technique proved effective in facilitating peer interaction, allowing self-assessment, creative expression, and the development of interpersonal relationships, making it a valuable method for improving speaking skills in English language teaching.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is a descriptive research about study of the vocabulary mastery in identifying prefix and suffix of the second grade students of SMK Telekomunikasi Genteng in the 2021/2022 academic year. The purpose of this research was to find the student’ ability in identifying vocabulary mastery in prefix and suffix. Students at SMK Telekomunikasi Genteng are the population. The researcher chose the second grade students of Teknik Transmisi Jaringan Department as the sample in this research. This research uses a quantitative descriptive method. The instrument used in this research was a multiple choice test. The results showed that the students’ ability in identifying students’ vocabulary mastery in prefix is “good“, categorized with a total of 65,8. The results of students’ ability in identifying students’ vocabulary mastery in suffix is “average” categorized with a total 58,3. Based on the results of the research above, it can be concluded that students at SMK Telekomunikasi, especially the second grade of Teknik Transmisi Jaringan Department, have a “good” category in prefix, it means the students have already understood about some prefix vocabularies. The majority of correct prefix vocabularies place at multiple choice test number 1,9,17 such as: Exchange, input, interconnect. Furthemore, the result of suffix is “average” category, it means the students less of understanding about suffix. The majority of correct suffix vocabularies at multiple choice test number 2 such as: communication.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out whether using Webtoon Comics has an effect on reading comprehension of procedure text. This research used a quantitative research method with a one-group pre-test and post-test pre-experimental research design. The respondents were 34 students in seventh grade. The researcher gave the students a pre-test before giving the treatment, and the post-test was given after the students received treatment from the researcher. In this research, the data was collected by giving a test. The T-test analysis formula was used in this research to determine the difference between the average of the post-test and the pre-test in the experimental class. The T-test was analyzed and interpreted with the degree of signification level was 5% with df = 33, and the t-table was 2.034. The result of the T-test analysis was 10.092. It means that the T-test (10.092) was higher than the t-table (2.034) in the significance of 5%. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the use of Webtoon Comics as learning media was effective for learning reading comprehension
