Abstract

This research aimed to find out the types of presupposition and also the function of the utterances that consist presupposition in main character (Hiccup) dialogues with other characters in that movie. This research conducted by using Yule (1996) theory about types presupposition and also by using Searle in Levinson (1983) about types of language function to analysed the data. From the main character utterance, the data collected with descriptive approaches and suitable with the context and identified them based on pragmatics aspect about presupposition. From 107 data, the researcher found 5 types of presupposition, those are existential presupposition, structural presupposition, lexical presupposition, factive presupposition and counter-factual presupposition. The dominant types of presupposition is lexical presupposition. The researcher also found the language function in each types of presupposition, the first one is from existential presupposition there are 3 language functions such as representative, directive and declarative, from structural presupposition, there are 3 language functions they are representative, directive and expressive, from factive presupposition, there are 3 language function they are representative, expressive and declarative, from lexical presupposition, there are 5 language function they are representative, directive, commissive, expressive and declarative, and from counter-factual presupposition, there are 2 language function they are representative and expressive. The dominant language function in each type of presupposition is representative language function.

Abstract

Some people may misunderstand when communication and fail to obey the maxim that is called flouting maxim. Grice (1975) proposed four types of flouting maxims, they are flouting maxim of quantity, flouting maxim of quality, flouting maxim of relevance, and flouting maxim of manner. People who disobey the maxims can be found in creating humor. In this study, conversation in creating humor became a data source, and Stand Up Comedy Minangkabaunese Rin Hermana and American K-Von were chosen to be analyzed. The purpose of this study is to find out what type of maxim they flouted the most and the differences on both of the Stand Up Comedy. The method of this research is descriptive research. It is found that there were total of 32 utterances that flout the maxim. The results show that Stand Up Comedy Americans flout the maxim the most with 18 utterances while Minangkabaunese with 14 utterances. It is also found that the differences in flouting maxim of both of the Stand Up Comedy show that in Minangkabaunese Rin Hermana flouts maxim of quantity and manner with the highest number of 7 and 5 utterances while Flouting maxim of quality and relevance rarely appeared with 2 and 0. American K-Von flouts maxim of quality and quantity the most with the highest number of 8 and 5 utterances while flouting maxim of manner and relevance with number of 4 and 1 utterances.

Abstract

This research conducted to analyze the translation techniques used in translating interrogative sentence in Maleficent Mistress of Evil 2019 movie subtitle. The purpose of this research in to find the type of translation techniques used in translating interrogative sentence in the movie. This research used theory Azar (2002) to identify interrogative sentence and theory Molina and Albir (2002) to identify translation technique. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The data were gathered from the subtitle of interrogative sentence in the movie. There are 88 data of interrogative sentence found in the movie. There were 11 types of translation techniques used in translating interrogative sentence in the movie, there were reduction with 18 data, establish equivalent with 14 data, linguistic compression with 14 data, literal translation with 14 data, calque with 12 data, discursive creation with 6 data, generalization with 3 data, modulation with 3 data, amplification with 2 data, transposition with 1 data and variation with 1 data. The results of data analysis show that the dominant type of translation technique in translating interrogative sentence is reduction with 18 data.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate and comprehend the relationships between students' anxiety levels and students’ language production. This study used descriptive quantitative approach. The participants of this study were 20 students of classes NK – 3 as first-year English department at Universitas Negeri Padang. Data was collected using the FLCAS questionnaire to measure the level of speaking anxiety and speaking performance to assess students' speaking ability. The results showed that students' speaking anxiety level was in the average mildly range. The most dominant anxiety in students is related to two main aspects, namely Communication Apprehension and Test Anxiety. Furthermore, students' speaking ability has generally reached the level of "good enough" in aspects such as fluency, grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. Then, the relationship between the level of speaking anxiety and students' language production is a very negative strong relationship. It can be conclude that speaking anxiety has a significant negative impact on language production skills among first-year English Language and Literature students at Padang State University. This is evidenced by the fact that although most students have good enough speaking ability skills, they still experience speaking anxiety, especially in the context of speaking in public.
