Abstract

Background: Mental health literacy (MHL) is crucial for adolescents to recognize, manage, and prevent mental health issues. In Indonesia, increasing adolescent mental health challenges and limited culturally adapted MHL tools highlight the need for a validated Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS) in Bahasa Indonesia. Objective: This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the MHLS for Indonesian adolescents to assess their mental health literacy accurately. Methods: The study followed a three-stage validation process: translation, cultural adaptation, and content validation with a sample of 435 adolescents. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was conducted to assess construct validity, and Cronbach’s alpha was calculated for reliability. Results: The translated MHLS showed high content validity (CVI ≥ 0.87) and good construct validity with fit indices (RMSEA = 0.046, CFI = 0.956). Internal consistency was high (Cronbach's alpha = 0.907), indicating reliability. Conclusion: The Bahasa Indonesia version of MHLS is a valid and reliable tool for assessing mental health literacy in Indonesian adolescents, supporting culturally relevant interventions.

Abstract

Background: According to the World Health Organization, approximately 450 million people worldwide experience mental health issues, with 14.4% attributed to behavioral contributors and 13.5% categorized as mental health problems (Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, 2018). Adolescents from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to engage in unhealthy behaviors and demonstrate lower levels of health literacy. This study aims to identify the factors associated with mental health literacy in adolescents, with particular focus on peer pressure and economic inequality. Methods: This quantitative descriptive study employed a cross-sectional design. A total of 539 adolescents aged 10–19 years participated in the study through online questionnaires distributed via smartphones. Instruments used included the Mental Health Literacy–Young Adult Questionnaire, the International Wealth Index (IWI), and the Peer Pressure Scale. Respondents were selected using a convenience sampling technique. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation, Spearman test, independent t-test, and linear regression. Results: The majority of respondents (60.1%) were male and enrolled in junior or senior high school. Bivariate analysis indicated significant associations between mental health literacy and peer pressure, economic disparity, age, gender, and education level (p < 0.05). However, multivariate analysis revealed that only economic disparity and gender remained significantly associated with mental health literacy, while peer pressure, age, and education level did not show linear relationships. Conclusion: Economic inequality and gender are significant factors influencing mental health literacy in adolescents. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to reduce socioeconomic disparities and promote gender-sensitive mental health education.

Abstract

Background: Adolescents in Indonesia encounter a range of psychological and social challenges, including stress, anxiety, and academic pressures. However, cultural stigma and traditional beliefs often hinder their willingness to access mental health services. Reliable and culturally appropriate assessment tools are essential to evaluate adolescents’ readiness to seek counseling and to identify barriers that may prevent timely intervention. Objective: This study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the Seek Counseling Inventory (SCI) into Indonesian and to evaluate its psychometric properties, ensuring its suitability for use among Indonesian adolescents. Methods: A systematic cross-cultural adaptation process was conducted, involving forward translation, back-translation, expert panel review, and pretesting. Content validity was assessed by a panel of five experts using Aiken’s V, while construct validity was examined through Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The study recruited 435 high school students aged 13–18 years through convenience sampling. Reliability was evaluated using Cronbach’s alpha. Results: The Indonesian version of the SCI demonstrated strong content validity, with Aiken’s V scores ranging from 0.80 to 1.00. CFA results indicated an acceptable model fit (TLI = 0.976, CFI = 0.947, RMSEA = 0.051), supporting the instrument’s structural validity. Internal consistency was good, with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.822, indicating stable and coherent measurement of counseling attitudes. Conclusions: The Indonesian SCI is a valid and reliable tool for assessing counseling attitudes among adolescents. Its application can guide culturally sensitive mental health programs, enhance early identification of support needs, and contribute to reducing stigma toward counseling in Indonesia.

Abstract

Aims: The purpose of this research was to examine into the recent spike in curiosity regarding mindfulness-based therapy and their benefits on patients with brain tumors. Methods: The approach to searching was implemented by using certain keywords in an online database. This review's inclusion criteria were: (1) study of experimental design, (2) only brain tumor patients, and (3) Mindfulness-based therapy. The search was limited to English and Indonesian literature published between 2017 and 2023. To assess the quality of the included studies, the Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) tool, which is available for intervention research, was employed. Results:  For this investigation, the original search method returned 581 documents. After a comprehensive study of these papers and application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, four papers met the inclusion criteria. The programs lasted between 8 and 12 weeks. While mindfulness-based therapies revealed a good benefit for brain tumor patients, one study found a negative effect on family well-being. Conclusions: According to the journals reviewed, this study intends to evaluate the benefits of mindfulness training for improving the condition of brain tumor patients. The biological factors of the tumor or the participant's cognitive profile may influence improvement.

Abstract

Introduction: Mental and emotional health among street children remains an urgent issue in Indonesia due to limited psychosocial support and exposure to daily stressors. This community service program, THREE DREAM (3 Diary Recovery Emotion Actual Mindfulness), was developed as an innovative model combining expressive diary writing and mindfulness training to help children recognize, express, and regulate emotions more effectively. Objective: This study aims to improve emotional regulation, emotional intelligence, and mental health among street children at Yayasan Bagea Bandung through interactive and reflective learning activities. Method: The program was implemented over six offline sessions involving 20 children aged 7–12 years. Each session integrated storytelling, diary writing, drawing, sharing emotions, and mindfulness exercises. Quantitative data were collected using pre-test and post-test questionnaires on three variables: emotional intelligence, emotional regulation, and mental health. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was used to analyze the differences before and after the intervention. Result: The results showed a significant improvement in all measured aspects, with mean emotional intelligence increasing from 64.50 to 82.50, emotional regulation from 21.20 to 33.35, and mental health from 30.90 to 46.75 (p = 0.000). Children exhibited higher self-awareness, confidence, and openness in expressing emotions. Conclusion: The THREE DREAM program effectively enhanced the children’s emotional well-being through creative and mindful activities. This community-based model demonstrates strong potential for replication and sustainability in other social institutions supporting vulnerable children.
