Abstract

Movies are popular forms of entertainment for younger individuals and a useful instruments for language learning. This study focuses on semantics, specifically the use of metaphorical language in the film "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer." Semantics is a method of linguistics that studies meaning, including synonyms, antonyms, word meanings, and word relationships. This study used a qualitative research method to detect different types of metaphorical language in the movie script. The qualitative approach entails analyzing data using words and utterances, whereas the data was collected and analyzed using methodology and observation. The study approach consisted of watching the film, analyzing the transcript, and identifying metaphorical terms. The researchers used a non-participant technique, in which they studied the movie transcript without directly interacting with the subjects. The study identified and classified 13 instances of figurative language, including 1 simile (7.7%), 2 metaphors (15.4%), 2 personifications (15.4%), 2 hyperboles (15.4%), 2 occurrences of irony (15.4%), 2 cases of symbolism (15.4%), 1 paradox (7.7%), and 1 litotes (7.7%). The findings highlight the film's varied use of figurative language, which enriches the story and improves comprehension, making it an interesting medium for language learners.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research aimed to discover different types of presupposition occurred in the Camp Rock movie. To sort the data into categories according to the types of presupposition, the theory of Yule (1996) was applied. Existential presupposition, factive presupposition, lexical presupposition, structural presupposition, non-factive presupposition, and counterfactual presupposition are the six types of presupposition. Observational and non-participatory techniques were used to obtain the data. Additionally, the data was analyzed using the pragmatic identity technique and pragmatic competence-in-equalizing data. To get data from the source, a number of procedures are taken. The researchers started by downloading the movie’s script. The researchers next watched the movie on the internet while highlighting the utterances that had the occurrence of presupposition. The result of this research revealed that there were 15 utterances of presupposition in Camp Rock movie. There were existential presupposition with 4 data, factive presupposition with 1 data, lexical presupposition with 5 data, structural presupposition with 4 data, and counterfactual presupposition with 1 data. The most dominant presupposition type appeared in the movie was lexical presupposition, because most of the characters declared meanings which were customarily interpreted with presumptive statement and had another meaning was recognized.

Abstract

The primary goal of this descriptive qualitative study was to investigate the strategies of impoliteness used by the speakers in the Keeping Up With The Kardashians series on YouTube. The utterances which contain the strategies of impoliteness uttered by the speakers within the series were taken as the data. Furthermore, the data were analyzed by identifying the impoliteness strategy according to Culpeper (2005)’s theory. Descriptive qualitative by Creswell & Creswell (2018) was performed in this research. The observational method was used as the method to collect the data. Furthermore, to analyze the data pragmatic identity method was conducted along with equalizing technique. The results showed at least fifteen utterances produced by the speakers with an impoliteness strategy in the three videos of the Keeping Up With The Kardashians series. The four (4) data showed negative impoliteness, four (4) data showed sarcasm / mock politeness, three (3) data showed withhold politeness, two (2) data showed bald on record, and two (2) data showed positive impoliteness. The negative impoliteness was the most frequently used by the speakers in the Keeping Up With The Kardashians series. Impoliteness is not always performed by rude behaviors but a simple utterance can also indicate the act of impoliteness.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to identify distinct types of reference grammatical cohesion generated by children between the ages of two and nine in New York City based on the theory of Halliday & Hasan (1976). The data source of this research was the Recess Therapy YouTube channel. This research applied the qualitative research method defined by Creswell (2013). This research used an observational method to collect the data. In analyzing data, the researchers applied the identification method and identity technique. The result of this research the researchers found 364 data that were categorized into three types. There were 180 data that indicated personal references. Next, there were 97 data categorized as demonstrative references and the last, there were 87 data indicated comparative references. Grammatical cohesion is critical in this process because it provides the language processes required to link, organize, and express meaning within written speech. Recognizing the significance of grammatical cohesiveness is critical for those who want to improve their communication abilities since it allows them to produce coherent structures, and effective.
