Abstract

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research aims to find out the type of category shifts proposed by Catford in English-Indonesia bilingual book Little Companion (2017) written by Arleen Aaron Randy and the significant contribution of category shifts from source language to target language. The data were collected by using observation method and non-participatory technique. The data were analyzed by using translational identity method and translational competence in-dividing technique. There were four types of category shift found. Structure shift functioned to change in grammatical structure from source language to target language. Class shifts occurred when the translation equivalent of source language item was a member of different class of word, from noun to adjective, and clause to verb. Intra-system shift functioned to change the plural to singular. And unit shift was applied when the unit at one level in source language became different level in the target language. There were high level to lower level, and low level to higher level in unit shift. The significant contribution of category shifts in translating was to re-express the same meaning, to vary the translation way, to encourage social culture, to reveal the same meaning, and to get easily the result of translation shifts.

Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance the speaking fluency of vocational school students through the application of the Direct Method in teaching connected speech. Connected speech, a crucial aspect of natural English pronunciation, is often neglected in conventional English instruction. The Direct Method, which emphasizes immersive language use and oral interaction without translation, was chosen to improve students’ spontaneous speaking skills. The training was conducted at SMK Tunas Muda Batam with 19 students participating in a series of interactive sessions. Using qualitative-descriptive methods, pre-training and post-training observations, along with feedback, were analyzed. Results show a significant increase in students’ confidence, listening comprehension, and ability to produce reduced forms such as linking, assimilation, and elision. This activity highlights the effectiveness of the Direct Method in helping EFL learners internalize natural English rhythm and speech patterns.

Abstract

This training was conducted at SMKS Gurindam Boarding School with the aim of enhancing students' reading comprehension skills through the implementation of the Schema Activation Strategy, supported by the integration of Morphological Awareness and Vocabulary Knowledge. The program was designed in response to the students' observed difficulties in understanding English texts, especially in identifying implicit information. The training included interactive sessions such as lectures, discussions, practical simulations, and assessments. Initially, students were introduced to the basic concepts of schema theory, word structure, and morphemes, followed by exercises connecting their prior knowledge to new information in reading texts. The integration of morphological understanding and vocabulary awareness allowed students to decode words and comprehend contextual meaning more effectively. The students demonstrated high enthusiasm and active participation throughout the sessions, indicating the relevance and effectiveness of the applied methods. Teachers also played a vital role in facilitating student engagement and ensuring the sustainability of the strategies introduced. Overall, based on the training activity and student’s score the program succeeded in fostering critical and analytical reading skills, equipping students with the tools necessary for long-term academic literacy development. This initiative highlights the importance of using targeted instructional strategies to address learning challenges and improve English literacy among vocational high school students.

Abstract

Mastering English for teachers can increase their competency in this digital era. Teachers who speak English achieve their selling point in communication, gain access to global references and the latest educational technology, and broaden their professional mindsets. This training trained the participants to understand non-native speakers of English, and speak English like non-native speakers by providing connected speech which contains linking, assimilation, elision, silent letters, and intrusive [j] dan [w] as the topic. This training, which 55 teachers attended, was held at SMAN 16 Batam on 17, 23, and 31 January 2025. This training applied a service-learning method with models of lectures, discussions, and practice. The results showed an increase in ability of 71%, when initially only two participants could pronounce them before training. The planned and sustainable programmes will provide successful English language training. Having the ability to speak English is not only useful for teachers but also for the school and the students being taught.

Abstract

This qualitative research study examines the turn-taking methods utilized during the presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, with a focus on utterances and written words. Employing an observational approach (Sudaryanto, 2015), data were collected by closely observing the debate and recording pertinent remarks through note-taking. Several steps were followed in data collection, including initial observation of the debate, transcription of the debate script, and highlighting remarks indicative of turn-taking strategies as proposed by Stenström (1984). Data analysis followed the identification method outlined by Creswell and Poth (2014), involving multiple viewings of the debate video to comprehend the turn-taking methods and categorize the transcriptions to denote their application. The study identified 29 turn-taking strategies based on Stenström's (1984) theory, categorized into three groups: initiating the turn (starting up, taking over, and interrupting), maintaining the turn (utilizing filled pauses, lexical repetition, and introducing new topics), and relinquishing the turn (prompting, appealing, and conceding). These findings offer valuable insights into communication strategies within high-stakes political debates and contribute to a deeper understanding of the interplay between theory and qualitative research.

Abstract

Tortor Ija Juma Tidahan is a traditional Simalungun dance rich in cultural values and philosophical meanings. Over time, the existence of this dance has begun to fade amidst the current of modernization. This study aims to analyze the cultural values in Tortor Ija Juma Tidahan as a form of revitalization of the almost faded Simalungun culture, using Peirce's semiotic approach (1931). In this analysis, dance elements such as movements, music, clothing, and visual symbols are categorized into icons, indices, and symbols. The results show that dance movements function as indices that reflect the close relationship of the Simalungun people with nature and farming activities, while music and clothing act as icons and symbols that represent cultural identity and spiritual values. Although this dance has experienced a shift in function from sacred rituals to entertainment, its cultural meaning still persists. This study concludes that the revitalization of Tortor Ija Juma Tidahan can be done through adaptation to modern media, cultural education among the younger generation, and integration into traditional activities and cultural festivals as an effort to maintain the existence and meaning of this dance in the era of globalization.
