Abstract

The objective of this study was to identify the various forms of directive speech acts in the movie Pixels (2015) by applying Searle's theory of speech act. The researchers employed a qualitative method to analyze the movie's conversation for directive speech acts. The investigation focused on the different acts of directive speech acts presented in the movie. The data for the research were obtained through non-participatory observation of the movie's conversation dialogue. Each statement in the dialogue was found to contain a distinct form of directive speech act. The researchers used an identity method to analyze the data and identified 15 instances of directive speech acts, which were classified into different acts including asking (5 instances), permitting (3 instances), requesting (4 instances), begging (2 instances), and commanding (1 instance).

Abstract

This research aims at identifying the English words pronounced by the Brits which did not follow the standard of Received Pronunciation (RP). The received Pronunciation is proposed by Finegan (2015). The specific sound shifting taken becomes the accents of British English. These accents were sometimes used by the EFL learners while speaking English as they thought it was the standard English. This qualitative research took the data from the English speeches spoken by the famous Brits on YouTube. This research applied the observational method to collect the data, and phonological approach, identity method, and articulatory phonetic identification to analyze the data. It is summed up that the glottal stop [ʔ] replaces the alveolar [th] at the final and between vowels. The dental [θ[ and [ð] are shifted by the labiodental [f] and [v]. The velar [x] replaces the velar [k], the final velar [ŋ] becomes [n], and the final [th] is shifted by the glottal [h]. In the case of vocalization, the diphthong [eɪ] becomes [aɪ], the vowel [æ] becomes [ʌ], the schwa [ə] becomes [æ], and the vowel [ʌ] becomes [ʊ]. These changes are not for the British English in general. The accents depend on the regions where the speakers come from. However, the glottal stop [ʔ] are almost used by the speakers. This finding gives information that these accents are not the standard English. Moreover, these British English accents are not the mistakes.

Abstract

This qualitative research aimed at finding out the assertive acts. To fulfill the objective of this research, the researchers used Searle and Vanderveken’s theory about assertive acts. The theory was applied to the “Spider-man No Way Home” movie as the data source. The movie was chosen because the characters mostly uttered the truth about the hero’s struggles in the movie. In collecting the data, the researchers applied the observational method. This method was used to observe the use of language based on the context of an utterance and it was followed by a note-taking technique to get valid data. In analyzing the data, the researchers used the pragmatic identity method followed by the pragmatic competence in equalizing technique. This technique aimed to equalize the data with the theory pragmatically. Finally, the result was displayed narratively and descriptively. The researchers discovered twenty-three out of thirty-two acts of assertiveness. The acts were asserting, affirming, stating, denying, assuring, arguing, informing, reminding, objecting, predicting, reporting, suggesting, insisting, hypothesizing, guessing, swearing, admitting, confessing, accusing, blaming, praising, complaining, and boasting. The researchers did not find any claiming, disclaiming, rebutting, notifying, retrodicting, conjecturing, testifying, criticizing, or lamenting. The most frequently appeared was informing act. Characters' utterances contained more social meaning in conveying information to the interlocutors. The utterances were not only uttered by the speakers, who were the ones who got the effect, but also by the hearers. The utterances occurred because it was based on a situation that caused the speaker to express the statements

Abstract

TThis study aims to discover the challenges in interpreting English into Indonesian. When the the source language (SL) speaker delivers a speech, and interpreters convey the meaning into the Indonesian language as target language (TL). This study used qualitative research method. Data were collected by using the interview, open-ended questions to obtain main data from the respondents. Respondents are Indonesian interpreters in Indonesia as they have more than five years of experience in interpreting. The collected data are transcribed and deeply analyzed, grouped and compared with the different and similar data to recent research results, explained by using words and texts and applied a table to display the results of challenges English in interpreting. The results of this research indicate the challenges English in interpreting. First, the most challenging faced by interpreters is long talks. Second, the lack of pronunciation is more challenging to record all words pronounced from the speech. And the third, topic mastery is the basic challenging as the source of materials are not available and there is not much time to approach the speakers’ source language (SL).

Abstract

This qualitative research aimed at finding out the speech acts and the functions of expressive illocutionary theorized by Searle & Vanderveken and Leech in conversations among characters in “The Summer I Turned Pretty” TV Series. The observational method and note-taking technique were employed to collect data. To analyze the data, the researchers used the pragmatic identity method. This research used a descriptive narrative method to present the results. Therefore, the results are presented in words and sentences. The findings of this research were of 13 different acts, and four different functions from 15 data. The researchers found there are 3 data of thank, 2 data of apologize, 1 data of greeting, 1 data of congratulate, 1 data of praise, 1 data of protest, 1 data of complaint, 1 data of lament, 1 data of deplore, 1 data of condole, 1 data of compliment, 1 data of boast, and 1 data of welcome. The most dominant act is the act of thank with 3 data. This is because the speakers and the hearers used to express gratitude. Based on the functions, there are 11 data of convivial, 2 data of conflictive, 1 data of collaborative, and 1 data of competitive found. The most dominant function of expressive act is convivial. This is because the speaker and the hearer show respect and politeness.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify the grammatical cohesion in the “Tim Ferriss” podcast. The researchers adhered to the theory of Halliday and Hassan regarding grammatical cohesion. There are four types of grammatical cohesion introduced by Halliday and Hassan (1976). The research design was qualitative. The observational method and note-taking technique were employed to collect the research data. There were several steps in collected data, the researchers watched the entire interviewing podcast, then the researchers took notes and transcribed the spoken discourse. Next, the researchers highlighted the data base on the theory. In analyzing the data, this research used referential identity method and a coding process in the analysis of data. There several steps in analyzing data, the researchers read carefully the highlighted data. Next, the researchers coded data by marking and give number to data based on the research questions. Then researchers reduced the extensive data by selecting the main data. Finally, the researchers analyzed and identify the selected main data base on the research theory. The results of this research were clarified and displayed informally in the form of words to sentences. The results revealed the reference was the frequently utilized in the podcast due to the speaker and the hearer commonly refer to persons, things, proximity and describe comparisons between instances or elements in the discourse.
