Abstract

The main activities in Serang Regency which are suspected to produce pollutants and air emissions include industrial business activities where the pollutants produced are in the form of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) gas which is not only dangerous for humans and animals, but also dangerous for plant life. Therefore this study tries to examine the spatial pattern of NO2 gas dispersion and its impact on settlements in Serang Regency. Based on the results of ambient air quality measurements in Serang Regency, which have been measured by the Serang Regency Environmental Agency from 2015 - 2019 for the NO2 parameter, it is seen that none of them exceed the standard of the PP No. 41 of 1999 concerning Air Pollution Control. The results of gas dispersion modeling show a tendency that gas concentration is relatively high in industrial zones, which indicates the contribution of gases from industrial business activities in several monsoons. The most extensive settlement affected by NO2 gas with the highest value (40-50 µg / Nm3) is in Cikande District covering an area of 396.4 Ha which occurs during the west monsoon (December-February).

Abstract

In Serang Regency, pollutants and air emissions are produced by industrial activities, including Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) gas. SO2-polluted air causes problems to the human respiratory system. This study examine the spatial pattern of SO2 gas dispersion and its impact on settlements in Serang Regency using geostatistic and Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) method in Arc GIS. Based on the results of ambient air quality measurements in Serang Regency, which have been measured by the Serang Regency Environmental Agency from 2015 - 2019 for the SO2 parameter, it can be seen that none of them exceed the standard of the PP No. 411999 concerning Air Pollution Control. The results of spatial analysis of gas dispersion show tendencies of high gas concentration in industrial zones, which indicate the contribution of gases from industrial business activities in several monsoons. The most extensive settlement affected by SO2 gas with the highest value of 40-50 µg / Nm3 is on Cikande District covering an area of 3.173,77 Ha which occurs during the west monsoon from December to February.

Abstract

The 2018 Sunda Strait tsunami that was not sourced from tectonics earthquakes hit the west coast of Serang Regency as one of the affected areas. On this account, addressing the tsunami risk in this region shall be done wisely through the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) effort. This research aims to firstly examine the DRR that has been implemented after the 2018 tsunami, and secondly identify the internal and external environmental factors, as valuable input in developing the strategies on enhancing the tsunami resilience. This research has a qualitative descriptive study, using primary and secondary data sources. The data collection techniques employ the literature studies, interviews, FGDs, and field observations. Furthermore, this study applies SWOT analysis to identify the internal and external environmental factors. The results indicate the progresses made in tsunami DRR on the west coast of Serang Regency. However, although policies for coastal area planning and management have been established, there is still a need for community socialization, proper implementation, and enforcement of the law. Moreover, both of robust tsunami early warning system and public education on vandalism prevention is also needed. Finally, the results of identifying the internal and external environmental factors show that there are 3 strengths, 3 weaknesses, 3 opportunities and 3 challenges. Accordingly, the results of this identification can be used to formulate advance strategies in increasing the tsunami resilience on the west coast of Serang Regency. Received: 2024-03-20 Revised: 2024-05-03 Accepted: 2025-12-03 Published: 2025-12-04
