Abstract

Following the enactment of Qanun No. 13 of 2018 concerning Islamic Financial Institutions, some people believe that the closure of conventional banks in Aceh, without viable alternatives, has caused confusion. This is primarily because people were accustomed to using conventional banking facilities for various transactions, both at local, national, and international levels. This study aims to assess the performance of Islamic banks in Aceh after the implementation of Qanun No. 11 of 2018, which replaced conventional banks that had previously provided optimal services to the community. Specifically, the study examines the actions and strategic steps taken by Islamic banks in Aceh to meet the banking needs of the community. It also explores whether the performance and product diversification of Islamic banks have impacted customer satisfaction following the implementation of Qanun No. 11 of 2018 in Aceh. Data was collected through interviews with 23 informants. The findings suggest that while Islamic banks continue to provide services and meet community needs after the conversion, customers still face some technical obstacles, which may give the impression that Islamic banking services are not yet fully effective. However, improvements in post-conversion services appear to be aligned with the regulations set by the government.

Abstract

Islamic banking operates based on sharia principles, which strictly prohibit practices such as riba (interest), gharar (excessive uncertainty), and maysir (gambling). These prohibitions directly influence the approach to risk management. This study aims to review existing literature related to the application of sharia principles in risk management within Islamic banking. To thoroughly explore the topic, this study employed a library research method, which involved collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing information from various academic sources, including scholarly journals, books, and research reports.  The findings reveal that Sharia principles not only provide a unique framework for risk management but also strengthen the financial stability of Islamic banks by avoiding speculative practices and excessive uncertainty. Furthermore, the Sharia Supervisory Board (known as DPS) plays a crucial role in ensuring compliance with these principles. Thus, the application of Sharia principles in risk management significantly contributes to the sustainability and stability of Islamic banking. However, challenges remain, such as the limited availability of Sharia-compliant financial instruments. This study recommends further study to develop innovative and Sharia-compliant risk management instruments and strategies to support the future development of Islamic banking

Abstract

The implementation of the Qanun No. 11/2018 on Sharia Financial Institutions (SFIs) has led all conventional banks to suspend their operation in Aceh. The Qanun has imposed Acehnese people to use sharia banking services. It raises the question of the extent non-Muslims accept the implementation of the Qanun on SFIs considering their civil rights and how they view the Qanun in terms of their religiosity, legal compliance, and motivation for submitting to it. This study aims to analyze the reasons why non-Muslims submit to and comply with the Qanun, as well as their experiences in receiving sharia banking services. This juridical and empirical legal research collected data from observation and in-depth interviews with nine respondents in several districts in Aceh and three people outside Aceh. It concludes that non-Muslims are generally in favor of the Qanun's implementation. They do not mind utilizing sharia financial products and services, and the Qanun's provisions do not restrict their access and interests. The administration of the banks can generally satisfy the legal requirements of offering sharia banking clients quality services irrespective of their religious background. All engagement elements are fulfilled under the civil law. The sharia banking principles has not only become shared values among different religious adherents in Aceh but also do not conflict with non-Muslim customers' beliefs, religions, and rights in terms of the priniciple of equality before the law.

Abstract

Online Service lending has become a widely used financial product due to its accessibility, including in Aceh, which has implemented Qanun Number 11 of 2018 concerning Islamic Financial Institutions that prohibits interest-based lending practices. Therefore, this study focuses on the supervision of conventional online lending conducted by the government in Aceh following the implementation of Qanun Number 11 of 2018. This research adopts a descriptive method with data collected through interviews. The findings indicate that, to date, conventional online service lending (pinjol) operations in Aceh remain unrestricted, with no limitations imposed on their activities. In Aceh, stakeholders have yet to take concrete measures to curb or prohibit conventional online lending practices. Consequently, many consumers in Aceh, including educated individuals such as teachers and students, as well as the general public, have been trapped in debt and faced payment defaults. Therefore, strategic actions are required from both the Aceh government and religious scholars (ulama) to collaborate and synergize with relevant institutions such as the Financial Services Authority and Bank Indonesia to curb conventional fintech practices in Aceh, in accordance with the provisions outlined in Qanun Number 11 of 2018 on Sharia Financial Institutions in Aceh

This study examines the impact of website quality on Muslim tourists’ intention to visit halal destinations, mediated by e-trust, e-satisfaction, and perceived halalness. Integrating the IS Success Model and the Theory of Planned Behavior, the study surveyed 172 Muslim travelers and analyzed the data using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results show that website quality significantly enhances e-trust, e-satisfaction, and perceived halalness, which in turn positively influence intention to visit. Website quality also directly affects travel intentions, underscoring its persuasive role in digital engagement. The findings contribute to halal tourism research by validating perceived halalness as a distinct mediating factor and highlight the strategic importance of culturally and religiously attuned digital platforms. Future research is encouraged to adopt longitudinal methods and broader cultural comparisons to deepen the understanding of Muslim travelers' digital behavior.
