Abstract

This research aims to discuss the important role of parents in increasing children's English vocabulary because there are still many parents who lack a role in improving children's English skills, especially increasing English vocabulary to improve language skills. Language skills are an important aspect of children's language development and have a significant impact on children's communication abilities. This study explored various ways parents can play a role in expanding children's English vocabulary. This research method involved a review of literature investigating the role of parents in children's vocabulary development. The research method used was qualitative research. Nine parents in Kelambir V Kebun Village were selected purposely as the subject of the research. Interview and observation were used to collect the data. The research results showed that parents had a strong influence in enriching children's vocabulary through speaking models, providing visual stimulation, and providing access to various English learning resources. In addition, this research also underlined the importance of creating an environment that supports language learning, adopting a positive approach, and understanding the child's developmental level. This research implied that parents have a central role in helping children acquire strong English language competence. By actively involving themselves in the language learning process, parents could make a significant contribution to the growth of their children's English vocabulary, but there were still many parents who did not have much effort and methods to increase their children's English vocabulary so that children had insufficient vocabulary.

Abstract

The research deals with predicates and arguments in the theoretical framework of Transformational Generative Grammar in terms of Thematic Roles or Theta Roles proposed by Chomsky (1981), Haegeman (1994) and his followers Radford (1981) and Ouhalla (1999). Thematic Roles may be defined as the participants of the arguments of a clause. It means that Thematic roles refer to the relationship between verbs and their arguments. Thematic Roles is focused to eight types of theta role. They are agent, patient, theme, experiencer, beneficiary/ benefactive, goal, Source and location. The analysis of Thematic Roles is taken form tne tale of “Macbeth” by E.F, Dodd in six tales of Shakespear. The result shows that agent is the biggest thematic roles found in the tale of Macbeth and source is the lowest one. Keywords: Thematic Roles, Verbs, Arguments

Abstract

Speaking English is an essential skill for vocational high school students to succeed in the world of work. However, many students face challenges such as limited vocabulary, low self-confidence, and minimal practice opportunities. This study examines the effect of the role-play method on improving English-speaking skills among students at SMK SPP SNAKMA. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving 35 tenth-grade students. Results reveal significant improvements in students' speaking abilities. Specifically, 85% of participants demonstrated increased confidence, 70% expanded their active vocabulary, and over 60% achieved better pronunciation and contextual communication skills. These findings underscore the role of active, situational learning in fostering practical English communication. The study highlights role-play as a transformative method for equipping vocational students with industry-relevant speaking skills.

Abstract

Dalam keberadaannya sebagai bahasa daerah, bahasa Singkil juga digunakan sebagai alat pengembangan dan penunjang budaya setempat. Namun disaat bepergian, bahasa ini jarang digunakan karena banyak penutur bahasa Singkil yang bilingual dengan bahasa Indonesia. Akibatnya, Bahasa yang jarang digunakan akan terancam punah. Berdasarkan judul di atas, penelitian ini bertujuan menjawab permasalahan penelitian yaitu: mengetahui ciri-ciri nominal dalam bahasa Singkil, proses-proses morfologi nominal dan mengetahui bentuk-bentuk nominal dalam bahasa Singkil seperti akar, afiksasi, reduplikasi dan majemuk kata nominal. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Untuk mendapatkan data, peneliti membuat pertanyaan dari pedoman wawancara yang direkam dengan Sony voice-recorder –UX56OF. Kemudian hasil penelitian ini memberikan gambaran lengkap tentang masalah penelitian. Selain itu, dalam menemukan analisis data, fenomena baru tersebut muncul karena terjadinya proses morfofonemik dengan dua vokal. Dan terakhir, peneliti menemukan bahwa morfologi nominal dalam bahasa Singkil dapat dianalisis dengan perilaku semantik, perilaku sintaksis, dan perilaku morfologis. Proses morfologi nominal meliputi afiksasi, reduplikasi dan gabungan. Kemudian bentuk-bentuk morfologi nominal yang ditemukan berkaitan dengan proses-prosesnya dibagi menjadi tiga yaitu; bentuk nominal dalam akar dan afiksasi, bentuk reduplikasi ,dan bentuk gabungan.

Abstract

Many students struggle to identify pronouns in sentences, a critical aspect of English grammar necessary for constructing clear and coherent communication. Pronouns play a vital role in sentence structure by replacing nouns to avoid redundancy, yet their correct usage poses challenges for learners. This study investigates the proficiency of tenth-grade students at SMA Swasta Cerdas Bangsa in identifying pronouns in English sentences and explores the specific difficulties they face. The research aimed to evaluate students' ability to recognize different types of pronouns and pinpoint areas requiring instructional support. Adopting a case study methodology, the study collected data from 30 students in class X.1 through a 30-item test consisting of multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions. Results showed that only 41% of the students correctly identified pronouns, with common challenges including confusion in pronoun selection and insufficient understanding of pronoun usage. These findings highlight the need for targeted teaching strategies, such as explicit grammar instruction and contextualized exercises, to enhance students' grammatical competence and overall language proficiency.

Abstract

Banyak model pembelajaran yang bisa diintegrasikan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis argumentasi siswa. Salah satunya model pembelajaran Problem Based Learning . Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu untuk meningkatkan keterampilan menulis argumentasi mahasiswa dengan menggunakan model pembelajaran Problem Based Learning (Pembelajaran Berbasis Masalah). Metode penelitian yang digunakan yaitu Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK). Subjek penelitian adalah mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris di Universitas Pembinaan Masyarakat Indonesia semester 6 tahun akademik 2021/2022 yang berjumlah 24 orang. Data dikumpulkan dengan teknik tes dan teknik non tes. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa model pembelajaran Problem Based Learning (PBL) dapat meningkatkan keterampilan menulis argumentasi mahasiswa yang terbukti dari nilai rata-rata yang mengalami peningkatan dari nilai 63 menjadi nilai 84. Tindakan ini mengalami peningkatan sekitar 2%. Berdasarkan hasil wawancara dapat dikatakan mahasiswa juga belajar dengan aktivitas yang baik dan dengan respons yang positif terhadap penerapan PBL. Penelitian ini merekomendasikan beberapa langkah pengelolaan pembelajaran menggunakan PBL untuk meningkatkan keterampilan menulis argumentasi mahasiswa. Abstract

Perkembangan teknologi digital yang pesat di era Revolusi Industri 4.0 telah membawa transformasi mendasar dalam berbagai sektor kehidupan, termasuk dalam bidang kesehatan masyarakat dan pengelolaan infrastruktur lingkungan. Salah satu pendekatan yang dapat menjembatani pemanfaatan teknologi dalam konteks komunitas adalah penerapan sistem monitoring berbasis Internet of Things (IoT) dan Big Data. Namun demikian, rendahnya literasi digital di tingkat masyarakat, terutama pada kelompok masyarakat non-teknis dan kawasan semi-perkotaan, menjadi tantangan utama dalam proses adopsi dan implementasi teknologi tersebut. Menyikapi tantangan tersebut, kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan dengan tujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan daring yang bersifat aplikatif, partisipatif, dan mudah diakses, guna meningkatkan pemahaman dan keterampilan dasar masyarakat dalam merancang dan mengoperasikan sistem monitoring kesehatan dan infrastruktur berbasis teknologi. Pelatihan dilaksanakan secara daring melalui platform video konferensi selama tiga sesi utama, meliputi pengenalan konsep IoT dan Big Data, praktik simulasi penggunaan perangkat sensor sederhana, serta integrasi data ke dalam dashboard pemantauan real-time. Metodologi yang digunakan menggabungkan pendekatan andragogi digital, microlearning, dan project-based learning untuk memastikan efektivitas pembelajaran bagi peserta dewasa. Evaluasi dilakukan melalui pre-test dan post-test, observasi praktik, serta kuesioner kepuasan. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa terjadi peningkatan signifikan dalam tingkat pemahaman peserta terhadap konsep teknologi digital, serta keterampilan teknis dasar dalam penggunaan sensor dan platform analitik daring. Sekitar 85% peserta berhasil memahami dan mempraktikkan simulasi monitoring suhu dan kelembaban, serta menyusun rencana penerapan sistem monitoring sederhana di lingkungan masing-masing. Pelatihan ini tidak hanya memperluas literasi digital masyarakat, tetapi juga menumbuhkan semangat kolaborasi dan inisiatif berbasis data dalam menghadapi isu kesehatan dan infrastruktur lingkungan secara mandiri. Kegiatan ini membuktikan bahwa pelatihan daring berbasis teknologi dapat menjadi strategi efektif untuk memperkuat kapasitas masyarakat dalam menghadapi tantangan era digital, sekaligus mendukung pencapaian Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan (SDGs) dan agenda transformasi digital nasional. Pelibatan masyarakat dalam sistem monitoring berbasis IoT dan Big Data dapat menjadi langkah strategis dalam membentuk komunitas tanggap teknologi yang adaptif, inklusif, dan berdaya.

Abstract

This community service program was implemented in Secanggang Village, Langkat Regency, at the eastern tip of Sumatra, a region renowned for its rich Malay traditions. The initiative aimed to preserve and promote local wisdom by producing an English-language short film, while simultaneously enhancing the English proficiency and acting skills of the younger generation. Using a participatory, training-based approach, participants received practical instruction in English communication and performance, which they applied directly in film production. Supported by Arti Studio Creative Network, the program encompassed language training, acting workshops, and technical assistance in filmmaking. The 28-minute film highlighted key aspects of Malay culture, including the historical Datuk Secanggang House, the Tepak Sirih Dance, and traditional culinary practices, thereby blending cultural documentation with global communication. Evaluation results indicated notable improvements in participants’ speaking confidence, acting ability, and cultural awareness. Beyond functioning as a work of visual art, the film served as a medium for language education, cultural preservation, and community empowerment. This activity demonstrates that local traditions can be creatively sustained through the integration of international languages and film. Future efforts should focus on sustained film production, broader community engagement, and optimized digital dissemination to ensure Malay cultural heritage from North Sumatra reaches a global audience.
