Abstract

Indonesia is the 4th largest coffee-producing country in the world. One of the coffee producers in the Bondowoso area of East Java is Tanah Wulan Village. This village is located in the Argopuro Mountains Cluster, which produces coffee, especially Robusta coffee. In processing coffee cherries into coffee beans, the husk of the coffee cherries becomes the most significant waste from this process, reaching 40%-45%. However, the use of coffee husk waste is still limited as fertilizer and animal feed. So that there is a need for research to explore the potential of abundant coffee husk waste, one of which is about the antioxidant potential of robusta coffee husk produced in Tanah Wulan village. This study aimed to determine the percentage yield of robusta coffee husk extraction with ethyl acetate solvent and analyze its antioxidant activity. The robusta coffee husk extraction with ethyl acetate produces a dark green solid with a yield of 1.09%. From the analysis of antioxidants using DPPH, the IC50 was obtained at 96.5 mg/L with a strong category of antioxidants. However, the antioxidant activity of coffee husk extract is still much lower than the comparison compound for vitamin C, with an IC50 value of 3.68 mg/L (powerful category). So that, further research needs to be done to increase the antioxidant activity of coffee husk waste.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of material pretreatment on the extraction process using the solvent-free microwave extraction method with the pretreatment of the material being air-dried for 48 hours at room temperature of 25-28OC. Other pretreatment was done by cutting the size of the material, namely 1 cm, 3 cm, and 5 cm. This research was conducted using a microwave with a power of 300 watts, 450 watts, and 600 watts. The extraction times used were 30 minutes, 60 minutes, and 90 minutes. Physical characteristics were tested by observing color, specific gravity, and solubility in 80% ethanol. The results obtained in this study by pretreatment of materials with the drying method in the wind - aerated have a significant effect on the yield of essential oils produced, the highest yield obtained is 2.106% compared to fresh ingredients with the same operating conditions fresh ingredients produce only produces the highest yield of 1.406%. The results of the physical characteristics test of color, specific gravity, and solubility in 80% ethanol on both materials have met the standard of SNI 06-3953-1995, but there is no significant difference. The optimal operating conditions in this study were when the power was 450 watts with a material size of 3 cm, and an operating time of 90 minutes for materials that were pretreated using the wind-air method or with fresh ingredients. Keywords: Solvent-free microwave extraction, pretreatment, physical characteristics.

Abstract

Tobacco is one of the abundant biomass resources, especially in Jember Regency. Tobacco stalk has potential as a raw material for bioethanol and has more economic value than just being used as firewood. One of the new renewable energy that comes from biomass is biofuel. The currently developed biofuels are biodiesel and bioethanol. Compared to fuel oil, bioethanol's advantages include having a high octane number (106-110), increasing combustion efficiency, and reducing pollutant emissions. Besides being used to fulfill energy needs, bioethanol can also be used as a raw material in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and various alcohol derivatives industries. The Covid-19 pandemic has also made the need for ethanol increase. The scarcity of hand sanitizer products has made the price soar. The raw material for the hand sanitizer is ethanol, so the need for ethanol also increases. Bioethanol production, in general, has a 4-step process. The processes are pretreatment, hydrolysis, fermentation, and distillation. This study focused on the fermentation process with the aim of knowing the effect of microorganism nutrition on the concentration of bioethanol from tobacco stalks. Fermentation is done with the yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae. The addition of nutrients in the fermentation process greatly affects the concentration of ethanol that will be produced. The addition of optimal nutrients in this study was shown in the addition of 1.3% of the total initial volume of the sample or 0.325gram with a concentration result of 23.9%. Keywords: bioethanol, microorganism nutrition, fermentation, tobacco stalks
