Abstract

                                        ABSTRACTThis research entitled ?Kata Pinjaman Bahasa Inggris dalam Istilah Medis Indonesia?. The objectives of research are to find out the kinds and the changes of the meanings of English loanwords in Indonesian language.  In analysing the data, the writer uses Haugen?s theory to find out the types and Baugh?s theory to get the changes of the meanings. To support the analysis, the writer uses Oxford Dictionary and Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia. The result of this research show that based on the theory of Haugen there are three kinds of loanword. Those are loanword without phonemic substitution, loanword with partial phonemic substitution, loanword with complete phonemic substitution and there are two kinds of the changes of meaning such as extension, narrowing, regeneration, and degeneration.      Keywords: Loanwords, Changes of meaning, Medical terminology, Sociolinguistics

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled is ?Taxonomy of Food in English and Batak Karo Language: A Contrastive Analysis?. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify, analyze, and contrast the kinds and categories of food in English and Batak Karo language. In this research, the writer uses descriptive method. The writer read some books about taxonomy of food to find the theory. The data of food in English were collected from thesis, book, and article, while in Batak Karo language were taken from direct interview to some informants and also by taking pictures of the foods in some traditional markets and in Batak Karo traditional event called Kerja Tahun. The data about foods in English and Batak Karo language that have been collected then identified, classified, and analyzed by using the theory of Frisch in Hickerson. Then, the data of both languages were contrasted by using Lado?s theory. The results of this research showed that in English and Batak Karo language, there are no differences in the food categories because both have the same category, namely solid food and drinks. The differences found are English has four kinds of solid food, such as meat and fish or seafood, vegetables, breads, and fruits, but Batak Karo language has five kinds of solid food, such as meat and fish or seafood, vegetables,breads, fruits, and rice. Alcoholic drinks in English are found in two kinds, namely low and high alcoholic content, while in the Batak Karo language there is only one kind of alcoholic drinks found, namely tuak. Non-alcoholic drinks in English are found in five kinds, namely mineral water, refreshing drinks, tall drinks, stimulant, and nourishing, while in Batak Karo language there are nine of non-alcoholic drinks found, namely teh putih, teh susu, teh tawar, teh susu telor, teh manis, sirup markisah, jus martabe, kopi, and mumbang. Keywords: Taxonomy, Foods, English, Batak Karo Language, Contrastive Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACT            This research aims to know the reflections of the types of social interaction in novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. The writer uses qualitative method, and then describing the result in descriptively. The theories that are used in this research are character analysis by Edgar V. Roberts and social interaction by Georg Simmel. First, the writer identifies character?s dialogues and acts, and then classifying all the data into types of social interaction that Georg Simmel divides into 5 types, which are Exchange, Conflict, Domination, Prostitution and Sociability. There are two questions that the writer forms as the statements of problem of this research, which are 1.) What are types of social interactions that found in novel ?Wuthering Heights? by Emily Bronte? 2.) How the type of social interaction reflected in novel ?Wuthering Heights? by Emily Bronte? Based on the research, the writer just found 4 types of social interaction in this novel, they are Exchange, Conflict, Domination and Sociability. There are no found any data about Prostitution. This data are taken from 3 major characters of this novel. The characters are Heathcliff, as the main character, Cathy, a female character whom Heathcliff falls in love with, and Hindley, a character whom motivates Heathcliff to take revenge. Abstract

ABSTRACTS               This study is an attempt to identify and to analyze the Wedding myths in Tombulu and England based on Barthes concept from the point of view of semiotics. This is attended to contrast the wedding forms of both tradition in the case of England and Tombulu. The aspect of this research is related to the sign system as proposed by Barthes. They are denotative and connotative. The term of signified, signifier and sign means something which is conventional and accepted by certain sign, related to what the myths. The England’s data have been collected from several book and websites, whereas the Tombulu have been taken directly from wedding event and by interviewing the informants from the Village of Wailan in District of Tomohon in regency of Minahasa. The results of research show that the wedding myths of both have a similarities in the aim of wedding function. The differences of both a myths are follows as convention wedding Myths event in England culture and the convention wedding myths in Tombulu culture. Abstract

ABSTRACTWhite Teeth is a 2000 novel by the British author Zadie Smith. It focuses on the later lives of two wartime friends the Bangladeshi Samad Iqbal and the Englishman Archie Jones and their families in London.This research Entitled”Nilai-nilai pertemanan yang dicerminkan dalam Novel White Teeth Karya Zadie Smith” aims to find the values of friendship that exist in the novel through the nature of some of the characters in the novel. this research is expected to be useful for readers in order to understanding the meaning of friendship in life.Through the Friendship Theories by James O.Grunebaum and characterby Robert Stanton, the data were collected by emphasizing on the process and the factors that affected the characters in friendship in the story. In analyzing the data, the writer used the descriptive method with extrinsic and intrinsic approach.The results show that the friendship values of the author are determines the values of friendship and also the value of friendship shown in the characterization of Zadie Smith's White Teeth novel which is illustrated by two main characters, Archie Jones and Samad Iqbal, including the Value of Understanding, Trust, Loyalty and Cooperation as stated above has an influence on their lives and their survival after World War II.Keyword: Friendship Values, Characters, Zadie Smith, White Teeth

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “Kata-Kata Pinjaman Bahasa Inggris dalam Bahasa Indonesia pada Koran Harian Komentar Manado”.The objectives of this research are to find out the kinds and the changes of the meanings of English loan words in Indonesian language. In analyzing the data, the writer uses Haugen’s theory to find out the types and Baugh’s theory to get the changes of the meanings.The result of research shows are three kinds of loan word. Abstract

                                                ABSTARCT          The study entitled Illocutionary Acts in the Novel The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas. In doing this research the writer used Searle’s theory (1970). According to Searle, illocutionary is a part of speech act and speech act is the center of Pragmatics. Illocutionary act menas uttering a certain sentence with a certain sense and references. Serale devided ilocutionary act into five categories, namely assertives, directives, commissive, ekspressive and declarative. The purpose of this research is to identify, clasify and analyze the function of illocutionary act in the novel The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas. The collected data have been indentified to the utterancess with contain illocutionary act that are used by the characters in the novel and analyze descriptively based on Searle’s theory. The result shows that there are five kinds of illocutionary act in the novel. Those are asserives, directives, commissives, ekpressives and declaratives. The function of illocutionary act in the novel are suggesting, stating, greeting, aplogizing, thanking and declaration. It is expected that the study can help the readers especially the student in learning pragmatics specifically illocutionary act in the novel The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas.Keywords: Illocutionary Act, Pragmatics, Novel The Three Musketeers

Abstract

                                           ABSTRACTPreposition is a word which is placed before a noun or pronoun. It shows the relationship between word and some other words in a sentence. In this study, the writer uses descriptive methods in this research. The data were collected by finding sentences containing prepositions and the writer underlines the sentence that has the prepositions. The writer classifies the data that have been found according to the concepts used. Data are taken from the entire Book of Daniel in the Bible which consists of 12 Article 357 verses. The writer analyzes the form and meaning by using the concept of Aarts and Aarts (1982) and Harman (1992). The result of this research shows that prepositions on the book of Daniel King James Version are found in terms of form and meaning. The forms are simple prepositions (one-word preposition) consist of : At, in, before, of, between, on, by, since, despite, until, during, up, from, with, whereas complex prepositions (multiword preposition) consist of : According to, in front of, as to, in spite of, because of , in terms of, by means of, on account of, by virtue of, on behalf of, in accordance with, out of, in addition of, with regard to. The meanings of the preposition that founded, consist of : refers to place, time, goals and objectives, source or origin, cause or reason, way, tool, inclusion, size, and circumstances.Keywords : Prepositions, Form and Meaning, The Book of Daniel King James Version.

Abstract

                                               ABSTRACT     This research attempts to describe and analyze the kinship terms of English and Mori Language (Analysis Contrastive). English and Mori language are two different groups of language which have specific patterns of kinship terminologies. Both languages have a special set of terms to indicate the kinship relations. This research aims to compare and contrast the analysis between English and Mori Language and using Lado’s (1957) concept as well as using descriptive method by Burling (1971) in which the kinship terms are characterized as “consanguinal” and “afinal.” The writer also used the method of Wardaugh, Burling and Loundsburry quoted in Leech to find out the similarities and differences between the languages. The data of English were collected from several relevant text books, and severalreliable sources from the internet, and the data of Mori Language were collected from informants through interview. The result of this research shows that both English and Mori Language have similarities in terms of sex, generation and lineage. The difference is that the English kinship terms give distinctions on the sex of all the relatives of in ego, while Morilanguage only has on severalrelatives of in ego. In generation, both of this languages have same generation such as four generations above and below ego.Keywords: Kinship terms of English and Mori Language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

                                              ABSTRACTS     This study is an attempt to describe, identify, classify, and analyze modal verbs in the novel The Stars Shine Down by Sidney Sheldon. Modal is a verb that combines with another verb to indicate modal or tense. A modal expresses necessity, ability, permission, possibility, necessary, willingness, and others.The problem of this study is to find out the forms and meanings of modals in the novel The Stars Shine Down by Sidney Sheldon. The method which used in this study is descriptive method.The data of modals are collected from the sentences found in the novel. The theory which used is taken from Beaumont and Granger. The result shows that there are seven forms of method found in the novel, namely can, could, may, should, will, and would.The meanings of modals are: can, ability, permission, possibility, and offering. Could expresses possibility, ability, disabilty. Will expresses request. Would expresses polite request.
