Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “adaptasi dan integrasi budaya lokal pada bahan ajar bahasa Inggris oleh guru sekolah menengah di Tanimbar” were focused to observe the use of English material adaptation by teachers in three secondary schools in Tanimbar, Maluku. The writer in this research used the theories from Richards (2007) and Cheng (2002) to be his main theories, where the typical of material adaptation that tried to be reached by teachers also came from those two theories, while the writer also read and learned some related research which have been done by Syahri and Susanti (2016) in Palembang and Warouw (2015) in Manado. In this research, the writer used some of data collection techniques that reliable to this research, namely; observations and interviews techniques. The finding shows that the mostly used technique is addition and it is practiced in the classroom spontaneously in order to meet the students’ needs. Then, the mostly used local cultural content in teachers’ practices is local folklores. Thhis local cultural content is used to develop students’ interests in learning English and play an important role in the teaching and learning processes.. Keywords:  ELT Materials, Materials adaptation, local cultural contents.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research is entitled “Verbal Interaction between Teacher and Students of the Sixth Grade of SD GMIM 31 MANADO and Its Influences on the Students’ Motivation”. In this research, the writer focuses on verbal interactions that occur between teacher and students in the classroom and how the interaction influence on students’ motivation. The aims of this research are to identify and classify the kinds of verbal interaction occuring between teacher and stdents in the classroom as well as to analyze how the interaction influences students’ motivation. In this research, the writer uses qualitative method with case study. To analyze several kinds of verbal interactions that occur between teacher and students in the class, the writer uses theory of FIAC by Flanders (1963). Interviews were conducted to find out whether verbal interactions influence student’s motivation. The results of this research show 8 categories of interaction that occur in the class; acceptance of feelings, praising or encouragement, asking questions, lecture, giving directions, criticizing or justifying, response, silent or confusions. In addition, the results of interview show that the interaction influences student motivation in these ways: 1) students like to learn English, 2) students can read in English, 3) students can write in English, 4) students can speak in English, 5) students can listen in English, 6) students understand what the teacher teaches when learning English, 7) the way of teacher to teach is fun for students, 8) teacher often use English when teaching, 9) what is interesting about English, 10) internal interaction class when the learning process between teacher and student motivates the student.      Key Words: Interaction, Students’ Motivation

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled “Ungkapan Cinta dalam Film What’s Eating Gilbert Grape produksi Lasse Hallstrom”. It is written to fulfill the requirement of accomplishing bachelor’s degree in English Department Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University. The focus of this research is love expressions in the film. This research includes the kinds of love expression and the portrayed of love expressions. The writer used concepts from Collier (2014) and Grande (2016) as well as theory from Fromm (1998) to identify and classify the data. The writer also used the theory from Snyder (2011) to analyze the love expressions in the film “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”. The result of this research shows 7 types of love expressed in 9 types of love expression. The 7 types of love are love as answer of human existence, love between parent and child, brotherly love motherly love, erotic love, love-Self, and love of god. The 9 types of love expression are spending time together, giving something or gift, receiving something or gift, motivating, giving appreciation, doing helpful behaviors, doing physical affection, believing in each other, and emotional overflowing.Keywords: Love, Emotional Expression, Expression of Love, Film, Theory of Film

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled is Analysis of Signs in The Crucifixion Film: A Semiotic Analysis. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify, and analyze the kinds and meaning of signs in The Crucifixion Film. In this research, the writer uses Pierce’s theory in the process to identifying, classifying and analyzing each scenes and meaning of signs in The Crucifixion Film. The method of this research is descriptive. In doing this research, the writer read some books and journals about signs. The data of signs were collected from every scene which contain sign in the film and analyzed according to Pierce’s theory. The result of this research shows that there are three kinds of signs in film, namely icons, index and symbols. Sign of icons found in 5 scenes namely man and woman, book, sister Adelina and Vaduva, book, and Agares. Sign of indexes found in 9 scenes namely cell iron, blood, costume black, light, insect, strangulation, blood, rain and blood. Sign of symbols are found in 5 scenes namely prayer candles, cross, prohibition, mask and cross. All of this signs contain different meanings. Icons of man and woman mean father Phil’s own, and woman: Nicole’s own. Icons of sister Adelina's and Vaduva’s means Sister Adelina and Vaduva itself. Icons of an exorcism book means a brown book and is a square shaped. Icons of Agares's demonic means a bald-headed demon, and a skull-like body. Icons of an exorcism book means a brown book, is square in shape. Index of the prisoner cell means confinement for the murder of Father Dimitru. Index of the blood means a reaction from within the body of Sister Adelina. Index of the black clothing means shows grief. Index of the flashlight means sing of darkness. Index of the insect means the existence of Agares' resentment towards Nicole. Index of the choking means the resentment of Satan Agares over Sister Vaduva's visit. Index of blood means the fall of Father Gabrielle from the roof of the Church. Index of the rain means mocking uses holy water. Index of blood means a violent impact experienced by Nicole and symbol of the prayer candle means light of Christ, symbol of the cross means life and evidence of strength, symbol of the prohibition means line cannot be passed and the entered, symbol of the mask means a costume for the celebration of the strigoi festival and symbol of the cross means life and evidence of strength. Keywords : Signs, The Crucifixion Film,  Semiotic Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research is entitled  “Slang in the  film Suicide Squad by David Ayer”. This research aims are to identify the slangs found  in the Film Suicide Squad, and analyze and describe their forms and meanings.The slangs data were collected from the film script which consists of 41 pages. The writer also uses some theory that related to slang language and definition of slang the theory used in this research is by Bloomfield and Guth. Theoretically, the writer hopes that this research can give some contributions to the enlargement especially of the sociolinguistics field more especially on slang word.From analysis this research, the writer analysis found six types of slang, they are: abbreviation, facetious mispronunciation, shortened, interjection, figurative, nick name (calling person).Form this research, the result show that are 2 slangs in the abbreviation, 10 slangs in facetious mispronunciation, 11 slangs in shortened, 8 slangs in interjection, 11 slangs in figurative, and 18 slangs in nick name.                                                                                                                                          Keyword: Slang, Film Suicide Squad, Bloomfield and Guth’s theory

Abstract

ABSTRACT  This research is entitled ?Students? Perception on the Use of English Songs for Learning English?. The objectives of the research are to identify, classify, and describe the students? perception about learning English using song. Also, it is to analyze and describe the aspects of learning that can increase students? English skills through listening English song. This research used descriptive method. The writer collected data by interviewing 20 participants at English Department, Faculty of Humanities, Sam Ratulangi University. The writer has found seven perceptions as the result of this research They are The Use of English songs to learning English is fun; not boring; effective learning media; entertaining; media to learn about culture; encouragement to learn; improve brain capacity. In this research, the writer also found improvement in students? vocabulary, pronounciation, listening and speaking skills. There are 15 students feel the improvement in their vocabulary skill, 16 students in pronounciation skill, 15 students in listening skill and 17 students in speaking skill.  Keywords: Students? perception, English Learning, Learning media, Song

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitles ?Analisis Tanda dalam Film The Black Panther Karya Ryan Coogler?. The aims of this research are to identify and classify the types of signs as well as to analyze the meaning of signs used in The Black Panther film. The writer uses the theory of Charles Sanders Pierce in the process of identifying, classifying, and analyzing each scene containing the signs used the representament aspect. The method used in this study is a descriptive method. To finish this study, the writer read some concepts related to the title about sign analysis and also downloaded resources from the internet. In collecting the data, the writer has watched 15 times The Black Panther film which is the object of the research. In addition to watching, the writer took pieces of images or visuals (screenshoot) from film scenes that are needed for research. The result of this research shows that based on the theory of Pierce there are three types of signs, namely icons, indexes, and symbols. There are 6 icon, 10 index, and 11 symbol. They were found from 22 scenes in The Black Panther film and each sign has different meanings. Keywords: Sign, Black Panther Film, Descriptive Methods

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled ?Kalimat Imperatif dalam Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Ponosakan? and focuses on the types, functions, similarities, and differences of imperative sentences in English and Ponosakan language. The writer arranged some questions for this research, that are: what are the types and functions, and the similarities and differences of imperative sentences in English and Ponosakan language.The data in English were collected by reading and studying as many references as possible related to this research. The data in the Ponosakan language was taken from 3 informants who know well about the Ponosakan language and used it in their daily conversations. After collecting the data, the writer identified and classified the imperative sentences in English and Ponosakan language. After that, the data were analyzed by using the contrastive analysis method. The writer contrasted the data between English and Ponosakan language to find the similarities and differences. Imperative sentences in English and Ponosakan language are devided into types and functions. The types are imperative sentences with subject, imperative sentences without subject, imperative sentences with let us, negative imperative sentences, and imperative sentences with do. The functions of imperative sentences in English and Ponosakan language are command, wish, invitation, and warning.Keywords: imperative sentences, English and Ponosakan Language, contrastive analysis.

Abstract

                                          ABSTRACTThis study aimed to analyze the character development of the main character in the film Barbie of Swan Lake (2003), directed by Owen Hurley, which was written by Elana Lesser and Cliff Ruby, and produced by Kim Dent Wilder and Rob Hudnut. This film tells about a kind girl who want to makes the revolution. She has development in character. The identified data are analyzed according to the intrinsic approach Edgar V. Roberts (1983) in Writing Themes About Literature to identified and analyzed the main character. In describing the character development used the approach by Rene Wellek and Austin Warren (1976) in Theory of Literature. This research shows about characterization of the main character and the character development of the main character in the film is influenced by situation, human’s idea, and words. This research shows the meaningful characterization and development of the main character in film Barbie of Swan Lake (2003).Key words : Character development, film, Barbie of Swan Lake (2003).

Abstract

                                           ABSTRACT      The title of this skripsi is “Alih Kode dalam Program “Nebeng Boy Vlog Musim 2”. The research uses descriptive method and analyzed from socilolinguistic point of view. The aims of this research are to identify, classify, and analyze the code switching appeared on “Nebeng Boy Vlog Season 2” and to find the forms and reasons. This research uses the theory of Romaine (1995) to identify the forms and Hoffman (1991) for analyzed the reasons. The data were collected from 10 videos on “Nebeng Boy Vlog Season 2” in Boy William’s youtube channel. The total number of code switching are 205 data found in the conversation of Boy William and all his guests. The results of this research show that there are two types of code switching. They are inter-sentential code switching and intrasentential code switching. The results of this research show also that there are six reasons which influence the use of code switching on the program “Nebeng Boy Vlog Season 2”. They are talking about particular topic, quoting somebody else, showing emphatic (express solidarity), interjection (inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors), making repetition used for clarification, and intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor.Keywords: Sociolinguistics, Code Switching, Nebeng Boy Vlog Season 2
