Abstract

The Gili Balu Marine Conservation Area (KKP), located in Sumbawa Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, is ecologically and economically significant due to its rich coral reef ecosystems. This research aims to measure the abundance and biomass of reef fish in the KKP Gili Balu, which can be used as a basis for evaluating the effectiveness of conservation efforts in maintaining marine biodiversity. The Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method was used, recording types of reef fish at ten observation points. The results showed that the highest abundance was found on Mandiki Island, with functional fish abundance reaching 2973 ind/ha, followed by Pasareang Barat Island (1903 ind/ha) and South Kalong (1600 ind/ha). The biomass of functional fish also reflects their important role in maintaining the balance of the coral reef ecosystem. This research contributes to the scientific understanding of marine biodiversity in the KKP Gili Balu and provides a basis for sustainable conservation management efforts. Additionally, the research recorded the presence of several coralivorous and economically important fish species, although they tend to be smaller compared to functional fish. Economically important fish in the KKP Gili Balu waters were found only at four observation locations: East Belang Island, North Belang, Kenawa, and Southwest Namo. The highest value was recorded at Kenawa Island, with 93 ind/ha. These fish tend to be rare in this area, possibly due to past fishing practices.

Abstract

Mangroves are coastal ecosystems rich in biodiversity and play a crucial role both globally as carbon sinks and locally in maintaining ecological balance and providing habitats for various species. Understanding the structure of mangrove communities is essential, as it involves studying the components and interactions within the environment. This research aims to examine the community structure and canopy cover percentage of mangroves at Keranji Beach, Paremas Village, East Lombok. Mangrove data were collected using the line transect method, while canopy cover data were obtained using hemispherical photography. The study identified 7 mangrove species i.e: Sonneratia alba, Avicennia alba, Avicennia marina, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora stylosa, and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza. The density of the mangrove ecosystem at the tree and sapling levels falls within the very dense category (≥1500 individuals/ha). S. alba was the species with the highest importance value index (INP) (231% - 271%), indicating its significant role and contribution to the mangrove community. For the seedling category, two mangrove species were found, R. apiculata and B. gymnorrhiza, each with a 1% presence. The average percentage of mangrove canopy cover was 64.8%, classified as moderate with a good rating.

Abstract

Intertidal biota consist of various invertebrate organisms that inhabit coastal aquatic environments and are highly responsive to fluctuations in water quality. Environmental changes induced by shrimp pond waste discharge can substantially influence the composition and diversity of intertidal biota communities. As a result, water quality serves as a critical determinant in maintaining the ecological balance and sustainability of coastal ecosystems. This study aims to analyze gastropod diversity within the intertidal zone near a shrimp pond waste discharge site and assess water quality based on the diversity index in Labuan Pandan, Sambelia Village, East Lombok. The research was conducted between June and November 2023, with data collected from five sampling stations located directly in front of the discharge site. A total of 40 gastropod species, classified into 32 genera and 22 families, were identified. The highest Diversity Index (H') was recorded at station 5 (2.503), whereas the lowest value was observed at station 2 (1.569). The highest Uniformity Index (e) was found at station 4 (0.947), while the lowest was at station 3 (0.811). The Dominance Index (D) was highest at station 2 (0.245) and lowest at station 5 (0.112). Sediment analysis across all stations revealed two predominant substrate types: loamy sand and sandy loam.

Abstract

Cempi Bay is an important water area with a rich and diverse ecosystem. One crucial component of marine ecosystem that plays a major role in maintaining the balance of the marine environment is seagrass. The objective of this research is to provide critical insights into the dynamics of seagrass populations in Cempi Bay and offer an overview of the broader coastal ecosystem's condition. The research, conducted in June-July 2021 at 5 research stations, employed the transect method. At each data collection point, three transect lines were created perpendicular to the coastline. The distance between transect lines was 100 m, and each transect consisted of 10 quadrants measuring 1x1 m with a 5 m distance for each quadrant. Four seagrass species were identified: Thalassia hemprichii, Cymodocea rotundata, Halodule pinifolia, and Cymodocea serrulata. These species were found on sand substrates, with the highest total density and percentage cover observed at Station 5 (1135.22 ind/m2 and 40.74%). The results highlight the necessity for routine monitoring, mapping, and further research to comprehend seagrass population dynamics and support effective conservation policies. Implementation of recovery strategies, water quality management, and continued research support is imperative to ensure the sustainability of seagrass ecosystems and marine resources in Cempi Bay.

Abstract

The fish processing and marketing group (poklahsar) in the Gili Matra Marine Protected Area has received intervention from the central government through Bappenas in the COREMAP-CTI III program. This intervention involves improving human resource capacity and providing grants for fish processing equipment. However, the limited duration of the program has resulted in suboptimal assistance in utilizing the donated fish processing equipment. Therefore, the involvement of universities in assisting the community is deemed necessary. This assistance activity aims to inform and educate the poklahsar about the use of fish processing equipment, particularly machines, to enhance production capacity in the Gili Matra Marine Protected Area. The assistance activities were carried out in July 2023 at the respective production locations of each poklahsar. The educational method for adults in this assistance activity involves lectures and hands-on practical training. The outcome of this assistance activity is an increased understanding and knowledge among poklahsar in the Gili Matra Marine Protected Area regarding the functions and uses of various machine-based fish processing equipment. Additionally, it was identified that some obstacles hinder optimizing machine-based equipment utilization, including a lack of understanding in using such equipment and limited market demand for processed fish products. In conclusion, the poklahsar have diverse views on using machine-based equipment, enabling them to optimize the use of such equipment despite the limited demand for processed fish products.
