Abstract

The big challenge of Indonesia in the political year (2018-2019) is the rise of hoax and expressions of hatred, especially with issues of ethnicity, religion, race and intergroup (SARA). Both of them have the potential to be a nation-dividing tool. Islamic Tertiary Institutions have the responsibility to reduce the spread of hoaxes and expressions of hatred, based on the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. This research illustrates the strategy of IAIN Surakarta to overcome SARA hoaxes and expressions of hatred issues in the political year. Theoretically, media literacy includes two things: individual competence consisting of technical skills and critical understanding, and social competence in communicative abilities. In conclusion, the effort to overcome hoaxes and hate speech by IAIN Surakarta is to build critical attitudes of students and the community through various activities, such as: seminars, discussions, community service based study programs, and collaboration with anti-hoax communities. In addition, IAIN Surakarta also strengthened religious moderation through several ways, such as lecturing in community, classroom teaching, and research. Thus, critical understanding and technical skills as aspects of media literacy can be developed.

Abstract

Although many agencies have carried out campaigns for and socialization of religious moderation, cases of intolerance still occur locally. These socialization agents are religious groups and university academics, and the media play a significant role because they produce information and influence people's perceptions to take action. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with Stuart Hall's content analysis. Hall believed that meaning is constructed through language. Meanwhile, the primary data source is religious moderation narrative articles published in the Solopos. This paper aims to describe the discourse on religious moderation produced by Solopos, published every Friday through the Khazanah rubric from March 2020 to March 2022. This research focuses on three aspects: firstly, who are the agencies used as references by the Solopos media in producing moderation narratives?; secondly, what are the issues contained in the Khazanah rubric?; and thirdly, how does the editorial policy present the discourse of religious moderation in Khazanah rubric? The conclusions of this study are: Firstly, Solopos uses teachers, lecturers, and religious leaders as references. They come from Islamic organizations such as NU and Muhammadiyah. Secondly, the issue of religious moderation raised by Solopos revolves around fiqh, muamalah, and aqidah. Thirdly, the editor of Solopos is committed to maintaining harmony by continuing to display articles that reflect moderate Islam. We call the journalism practice implemented by Solopos through the Khazanah rubric the wasathiyah journalism.

Furthermore, the roots of moderate and pluralistic Islamic life in Southeast Asia which have long historical roots have demonstrated the promising potential of this region. Da'wah in Southeast Asia should be the prototype of global da'wah. Da'wah in Southeast Asia has characteristics that are accommodative to local culture and anti-violence. Moderate and tolerant da'wah in Southeast Asia has reflected the teachings of the Koran and the teachings of the Prophet, and has proven effective in inculcating Islamic values in society at large.

Abstract

In Indonesia, stand-up comedy performances have become popular in recent years. Stand-up comedy performances are completed and broadcast regularly on Indonesian television, and easily be found on social media such as YouTube. However, some stand-up comedy material is considered offensive and has resulted in legal cases. This includes materials that carry religious themes. This research analyzes the representation of Islam in the stand-up comedy material of Priska Baru Segu and Boris Bokir on Deddy Corbuzier's YouTube channel. This study is descriptive qualitative research. The stand-up comedy material of Priska Baru Segu and Boris Bokir is examined using critical discourse analysis by Teun A. van Dijk. This research concludes that the representation of Islam in the stand-up comedy material of Priska Baru Segu and Boris Bokir depicts Islam as hegemonic. This image emerges in the relationship between the majority group (Islam) and minorities in Indonesia. The strengthening of majoritarianism further solidifies the hegemony and dominance of Islam. Priska and Boris present material that represents religious issues in Indonesia: the closure of churches, the pros and cons of saying Merry Christmas, raids on restaurants during Ramadan, and issues of identity politics. Comedy based on religious material that Priska and Boris deliver operates under the shadow of societal sensitivities and accusations of blasphemy.

Abstract

Freedom of the press after the 1998 reform had an impact on increasing the number of mass media in Indonesia. Abstract

This study attempts to analyze the propaganda delivered by the Habib in PKB Bersholawat initiated by PKB’s Majelis Pesona. After the reformation, Majelis Selawat in Indonesia was utilized for various interests, including for conveying political messages. One of them was Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa (PKB) through the Majelis Pesona. Majelis Selawat in Indonesia became an effective medium for gathering large masses. Religion and politics touch the emotional and personal side of the congregation. Majelis Selawat are popular among Nahdliyin and Indonesian Muslims in general. PKB Bersholawat contains messages of da'wah and politics. PKB utilizes the Majelis Selawat as a medium of political communication to bring in the masses. PKB utilizes religious figures such as Habibs, Kiai, and Gus to achieve specific goals. With a qualitative approach and Jacques Ellul's propaganda theory, this study concludes that PKB utilizes the Majelis Selawat to convey political messages. The Majelis Selawat were chosen because they can bring in large numbers of Muslim masses and reflect PKB's identity as a party born from the aspirations of Nahdlatul Ulama members, with the jargon of the rahmatan lil alamin party. The propaganda used by PKB in PKB Bersholawat is a bandwagon, transfer, and glittering generalities, in the form of support for Muhaimin Iskandar to become president, which is conveyed through prayers read by a Habib.

Abstract

This study presents the outcomes of a community service initiative conducted by Informatics Engineering students of UIN Jakarta, focusing on the enhancement of digital literacy—particularly digital safety and digital ethics—within the cultural context of Indonesian educational institutions. The program engaged nine schools across Jakarta, Tangerang City, South Tangerang, and Bogor, regions characterized by diverse educational and socio-cultural backgrounds. Emphasizing culturally sensitive approaches to digital interaction, the program provided participants with knowledge and ethical frameworks aligned with local values and community norms. Post-program evaluations revealed a marked increase in digital literacy, with an average score of 4.28 on a 5-point scale. Furthermore, 47.1% of participants rated the module on data security at the highest level. However, cultural barriers were also identified, including hesitancy from some institutions to adopt formal digital supervision structures, often due to traditional perceptions of trust and authority. Despite these challenges, the initiative proved effective in cultivating culturally-aware digital behavior, preparing participants to navigate the digital era while remaining rooted in local ethical standards.
