Abstract

This study presents the outcomes of a community service initiative conducted by Informatics Engineering students of UIN Jakarta, focusing on the enhancement of digital literacy particularly digital safety and digital ethics within the cultural context of Indonesian educational institutions. The program engaged nine schools across Jakarta, Tangerang City, South Tangerang, and Bogor, regions characterized by diverse educational and socio-cultural backgrounds. Emphasizing culturally sensitive approaches to digital interaction, the program provided participants with knowledge and ethical frameworks aligned with local values and community norms. Post-program evaluations revealed a marked increase in digital literacy, with an average score of 4.28 on a 5-point scale. Furthermore, 47.1% of participants rated the module on data security at the highest level. However, cultural barriers were also identified, including hesitancy from some institutions to adopt formal digital supervision structures, often due to traditional perceptions of trust and authority. Despite these challenges, the initiative proved effective in cultivating culturally-aware digital behavior, preparing participants to navigate the digital era while remaining rooted in local ethical standards.

Abstract

The dynamics of political communication are becoming increasingly attractive in today's digital era. Marked by the widespread use of social media by politicians, vlog (video blog) has been widely popular among youngsters. Its popularity increases once the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, took part in using the platform. Besides Joko Widodo, the Governor of Central Java, Ganjar Pranowo also used vlogs as a means of political communication. Using semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes, this research aims at revealing the image that Ganjar Pranowo wants to display through his vlogs. The study concludes how Ganjar wants to be perceived as a religious, popular, and contemporary person through the vlogs he uploaded on his Youtube channel. Religious image needed to be displayed considering that Ganjar is from a nationalist party (PDIP) while political opponents of President Joko Widodo (Ganjar's colleague at PDIP) are building the impression of Joko Widodo as anti-Islam. It was important for Ganjar to show himself as an egalitarian and a populist because he had an interest in the 2018 Central Java governor election.Ganjar utilizes a vlog to display him being up to date. This is important for Ganjar to attract sympathy from the millennials.

Abstract

This study aims to show the representation of religious moderation which is generated in three comic books on the topic of hijrah, a term now connoting a change in behavior from negative behaviors to good ones in relation to obedience to the rules of Islam. The choice of the topic was dictated by the fact that hijrah has been on a growing trend among middle-class Muslims in past years. This is literature research using interpretive method of qualitative research. The theory used in this research was Stuart Hall’s theory of representation. Hall stated that meanings are determined by language. In this study, the researcher tried to convey the meanings attached to pictures and dialogues in three comic books under study to show the representation of religious moderation. This research came to a conclusion that the three comic books on the topic of hijrah (Black Metal Istiqomah by Achmad Deptian, Hijrah; Saatnya Berubah by Dzulhilman Roslan and Megat Mohd Faris and iQomic volume 2: Hijrah in an anthology compiled by 14 comic-book writers) demonstrate and the value of religious moderation. Anti-violence, tolerance, and acceptance of local cultures are often taken as the indicators of religious moderation. Those indicators can be seen from the narration (dialogues and plots) developed and visual images produced in those comic books.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the political and religious expressions of Muslim Generation Z as represented on the Instagram account of islami.co. Methodology: The research employs a qualitative approach using semiotic analysis to examine selected comic strips. Data were collected through virtual ethnography by gathering comic strip posts published on the islami.co Instagram account. Findings: The study finds that the comic strips shared by islami.co on Instagram serve as representations of the political and religious expressions of Muslim Gen Z in response to political events in Indonesia. The comics reflect a form of critical Islam, particularly in relation to the then-ongoing presidential election. Research Implications: This research contributes to the growing body of scholarship on Islam in digital spaces, particularly as expressed through visual media like comics. It recommends the production of more progressive Islamic content on social media to help foster critical thinking among young Muslims. Such content should be delivered in popular formats such as comics, podcasts, vlogs, and similar media. Originality/Value: This study offers a novel contribution by integrating the themes of comics, politics, and religion within the framework of social media studies and Muslim Gen Z identity.

Abstract

This article reconstructs the concept of ridhaa (marital consent) in Islamic marriage law by incorporating psychological coercion as a form of defective consent that remains under-theorized in contemporary fiqh discourse. While classical doctrines of ikrah primarily focus on physical coercion and explicit threats, recent interdisciplinary studies in psychology have demonstrated that coercive control operates through non-physical mechanisms such as emotional manipulation, dependency, and behavioral domination, significantly impairing autonomous decision-making. This study employs a qualitative-normative approach grounded in ushul al-fiqh and maqashid al-shari'ah, supported by a systematic engagement with multi-madhhab fiqh sources and contemporary psychological literature on coercive control. By adopting a functional interpretation of ikrah, the analysis examines whether psychological coercion fulfills the same legal rationale ('illah) as classical coercion in invalidating consent. The findings argue that ridhaa should be conceptualized not merely as formal agreement but as substantively free will, protected from structural domination. Psychological coercion can therefore be framed as dhaarar nafsi that undermines legal agency and qualifies as a defect of consent within an ushulī framework. This study contributes by offering a more precise maqashid-based reconstruction of consent that bridges classical fiqh doctrine and contemporary empirical insights, while also identifying doctrinal limits to prevent over-expansion of ikrah.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the Islamic preaching activities of urban Muslim youth in Surakarta, specifically the Bikers Iqro community. The religious expressions of urban Muslim communities, often distinct from traditional Muslim groups, are perceived as a form of commodification of Islam. One example of such modern and pop-culture-infused religious expression can be observed in the Bikers Iqro community in Surakarta. This study adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings reveal that the Bikers Iqro community blends religious devotion with youth culture. They regularly organize forums for religious learning and preaching while simultaneously pursuing their hobbies, such as riding motorcycles together and customizing their bikes. Most members of the community are beginners in understanding religion. Their preaching themes focus on light and fundamental topics related to the basics of Islam.
