Abstract

This research is a descriptive study on the use of politeness principle in the Smallfoot movie. The researcher employed descriptive qualitative method by collecting the utterances of the movie. This research aimed to identify the types of politeness principles used by the main character in the Smallfoot movie . This research analyze the politeness principles by using Brown and Levinson (1978) politeness theory. The result show that Smallfoot movie consists four types of politeness principles. They are 7 bald-on record, 8 positive politeness, 4 negative politeness and 2 off-record. In the types of politeness principles used by the main character consist 70 utterances they are 34 (48,5%) utterances of bald-on record, 25 (35,7%) utterances of positive politeness, 8 (11,5%) utterances of negative politeness and 3 (4,3%) utterances of off-record. Based on the result of this study, the researcher expects this study gives contributions to the researcher herself and the readers and for further researcher who interseted in analyzing movie

Abstract

Subtitling is written translations from the source language to the target language, which are positioned at the bottom of the screen that appear and disappear along with the dialogue in the film. Translators often find difficulties in translating subtitles contains many cultural terms (culture-specific items/CSIs). CSIs are culturally specific concepts that do not exist in other cultures. Therefore, the researcher chose to analyze CSI by taking object from Peter Lee's documentary film entitled “The Mark Of Empire Majapahit”. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The purpose of this study was to find out the strategy of CSI and subtitling strategies of CSIs in the documentary film of “The Mark of Empire Majahpahit". In this study, the researcher focused on looking for CSIs in the form of words and phrases in the film. After that, the researcher categorizes the types of CSIs using the Newmark model. Then, the researcher analyzed the subtitling strategy of CSIs words proposed by Pederson. The results of the study found 45 words and 73 phrases of CSIs. The translation strategies of CSIs were retention (53 ), followed by calque (28), shift (8), specification (1), generalization (1), omission (0), and substitution ( 0).

Abstract

This research aimed to know the satisfaction of the third grade students in English online learning during pandemic at SMPN 1 Wongsorejo. The scope of this study is to analyze the students satisfaction in learning English. The limitation of this study is students satisfaction in learning English during covid-19 pandemic of the third grade students at SMPN 1 Wongsorejo. The indicators of the research are tangible, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy. This study used quantitative research. The subjects of the research are the 30 students of the third “C” grade at SMPN 1 Wongsorejo. The instruments used to collect the data is an questionnaire. The researcher made questionnaire in the form of positive statements for each stage and there were 25 statements (5 statements in tangible (facilities), 5 statements in reliability, 5 statements in responsiveness (willingness to help), 5 statements in assurance (ability to convey trust and confidence), and 5 statements in empathy). The students’ satisfaction would be calculated based on descriptive data analysis percentages and benchmarks. The finding of the research showed the satisfaction of the third grade students in English online learning during pandemic at SMPN 1 Wongsorejo is categorized as very high satisfaction with satisfaction score 86,27%.

Abstract

This research was aimed to get the empirical evidence of the effectiveness of Pictionary Game on students’ vocabulary retention. The method that was used was a quantitative method. The design of this research was quasi-experimental. This research was conducted in SMPU AL-Anwari Banyuwangi. The number of the sample of the research was 50 students of eighth grade. The instrument of this research was tests. The tests were divided into two, there were pre-test and post test The purpose of this research was to measure there is an effectiveness of Pictionary game on the vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students‟ of SMPU Al-Anwari Banyuwangi in the 2017/2018 academic year. The area of this research was SMPU Al-Anwari Banyuwangi. It was chosen purposively because they have never been taught by using “Pictionary Game” at this school. Another reason was that the permission to conduct this research in this school from the headmaster has already accepted.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is intended to draw the students’ writing ability of recount text used by the English teacher in Eighth year student at MTs Rogojampi in the academic year 2017/2018. The general problem of this study is how is the students’ writing ability of recount text used by the English teacher in Eighth year student at MTs Rogojampi in the academic year 2017/2018. The primary data are taken from questionnaire and the secondary data are taken from interview. The respondents of the research are the Eighth year student at MTs Rogojampi in the academic year 2017/2018. The total numbers of respondents are 60 students in the population that uses purposive sampling. In this research, the researcher uses the questionnaire as data collecting method. There are 70,42% mean score of orientation, 76,7% mean score of series of events, 72,9% mean score of re-orientation aspect, 54,58% mean score of grammar, and 54,58 mean score of vocabulary aspects. The result of questionnaire is the Eighth year students at MTs Rogojampi in the academic year 2017/2018 are good enough in writing recount text. It is fair enough to say that the student needs more improvement from the way how they learn English, how to write a good paragraph and also knowing the category of the text, especially conducting to recount text. This research can be used as consideration in selection of writing ability, especially about recount text.

Abstract

The thesis is about the effect of using literary film to improve speaking ability of the tenth grade student at MA Al Imarah Wongsorejo in the 2019/2020 academic year. The objective of this research is to know whether or not there is the effect of using literary film to improve speaking ability of the tenth grade student at MA Al Imarah Wongsorejo in the 2019/2020 academic year.The method used in this research is experimental quantitative method. The respondents of this research are 39 students of the tenth grade students. This research used purposive method to get the respondents of the research and the interview test to collect the data. The result of T- test is 13,420 and the T table value is 2,021 in the significant level 5% and degree of freedom was 37. It shows that the T-test value is higher than the value of T table. This data analysis is also strengthened by the average scores of students. The average score of the respondents’ posttest result was 73,974 which were higher than 39 in the experimental group that had gotten pretest. Based on the result of the data analysis and discussion, it can be concluded that, there is significant effect of literary film to improve speaking ability of Tenth Grade Students of MA Al Imarah Wongsorejo in 2019/2020 Academic year.

Abstract

Language is the most popular topic of research. Speech acts is the one of the study that can be accomplished by the researcher. Speech acts are discovered in everyday life as well asin the movie. In this research, the researcher focuses on identifying the types and functions of illocutionary speech acts in the tweets of presidential candidates in Indonesia, Jokowi & Prabowo, during the campaign period of September – April 2019. The researcher uses descriptive-qualitative design as the methodology of the research. The data collected by documentation following the Twitter accounts of both the presidential candidates and then the researcher screenshoted their tweets during September – April 2019. It was totally found 238 tweets or 143 tweets of Jokowi and 95 tweets of Prabowo that were performed as the illocutionary speech acts. There are 5 types of illocutionary speech acts occur in both Twitter account of Jokowi and Prabowo namely assertive, directive, commissive, expressive and declarative. The researcher successfully identified that expressive illocutionary speech act and the most- frequently-used by both Jokowi and Prabowo. It performs 46.7 %. And the least types of illocutionary speech act that was used by them are declarative. It performs only 3.8 %. The tweets of Jokowi performed 30 functions and the tweets of Prabowo perfomed 24 functions. The researcher suggests that this research can be useful as learning source and they can use the tweets as moduls for practice illocutionary speech acts for both teacher and students. For the next researcher, this research needs to be done further by the next researchers for understanding illocutionary speech acts more in Twitter sentences to produce complete information.

Abstract

This research is a comparative study of translation using descriptive qualitative approach. It aims at examining the quality (accuracy and acceptability levels) of religious terms translation of two translation works of an outstanding qualities novel written by Umberto Eco entitle The Name of the Rose. To be exact, this research airmed to: 1). Measure the translation accuracy and acceptability of religious terms in The Name of the Rose published by Jalasutra, 2). Measure the translation accuarcy and acceptability of religious terms in The Name of the Rose published by Bentang Pustaka, and 3). Describe the differences and similarities of the translation accuracy and acceptability of religious terms published by Jalasutra and Bentang Pustaka. The research data are religious terms found in The Name of the Rose which is collected using documentation method. The collected data are analyzed by using three following steps, 1). Comparing, 2). Describing and 3). Reporting. To assess translation accuracy and acceptability, the researcher used the translation quality assessment instruments by Prof. Mangatur Nababan. The research results that the translation accuracy and acceptability of The Name of the Rose published by Jalasutra and Bentang Pustaka are good. Both provide accurate translation of religious terms since they successfully translate 321 terms accurately. However, Bentang Pustaka translates 14 terms less accurately and 6 terms with inaccurate while Jalasutra translates 10 terms less accurately and 10 terms with inaccurate. The different quality of accuracy and acceptability was due to the translators’ different consideration between maintaining the accuracy and acceptability level or reaching high readability translation. The conclusion is that Bentang Pustaka provides better translation than Jalasutra.

Abstract

Code switching and code mixing are phenomenon of bilingualism that are used in speech community. The goals of this research were to identify the types, to find out the most dominant type, and to analyze the reasons focused on code switching and code mixing found in Aku Juga Tak Sempurna episode on Perspektif Metro TV. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The data were classified based on Hoffman theory. Then, converting the number of types of code switching and code mixing by using Walizer formula. The analyzed method followed Mile and Huberman. The classifications of code switching occured 79 times, including: 70 data (88,6 %) of inter sentential switching, 7 data (8,8 %) of emblematic switching, and 2 data (2,5 %) of establishing continuity with the previous speaker. So the most dominant type of code switching is inter sentential switching. Moreover, the classification of code mixing occured 150 times, including: 120 data (80 %) of intra sentential mixing, 23 data (15,3 %) of intra lexical mixing, and 7 data (4,6 %) of involving a change of pronunciation. So the most dominant type of code mixing is inter sentential mixing. Then, the highest reason showed talking about a particular topic were 168 data. The intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor and expressing group identity had the same result, they reached 16 data. Showing empathy about something were 11 data. Quoting somebody else, interjection, and repetition used for clarification had the same result, they reached 6 data.

Abstract

Problem-based learning is one of the innovative learning models that can provide active learning conditions. Problem Based Learning uses individual, group, and environmental intelligence to solve problems with the learning process. The purpose of this study was to analyze students' perceptions of problem-based learning model in English learning. This research used qualitative approach of survey type. The data collection technique used a questionnaire. The data from questionnaire was analyzed by using Likert scale. Sampling technique using quota sample, selected 23 students from XII at MAU Nurul Iman. The data analysis determined based on 7 indicators, 1. Student perceptions in terms of student and teacher interaction are in the agree category with a percentage of 67%, 2. Student perceptions in terms of motivation / increasing student learning interest are in the strongly agree category with a percentage of 82%, 3. Student perceptions of competency in understanding course material are in the agree category with a percentage of 67%, 4. Student perceptions of critical, effective and efficient thinking competencies are in the agree category with a percentage of 65%, 5. Student perceptions of good time management competencies are in the strongly agree category with a percentage of 85%, 6. Student perceptions in terms of good student learning outcomes are in the strongly agree category with a percentage of 85%, 7. Student perceptions of the appropriateness of the application of learning models with subject characteristics are in a agree category with a percentage of 67%. All the percentage show that the categories of students’ perception in problem based learning models in english language learning is in “agree” categories.
