Abstract

Teaching English in Elementary school is hard. It is because there is no special English teacher whose scientific field is English. The students are taught by the classroom teacher. Furthermore, the facilities and environment in the process of teaching English is limited. To understand the elementary students in teaching and learning English, the teachers must be more creative and fun in giving material and make comfortable classroom. Before teaching, the teacher should prepare all needed in teaching and learning process, especially instructional giving to the students. This study aims to describe about the teachers’ instruction in teaching English during the Era of Covid-19 Pandemic at Islamic Elementary School of Tarbiyatus Sibyan, Srono-Banyuwangi. This study is descriptive qualitative research design which is describing the teaching and learning process about how the teachers are giving instruction in teaching English during Covid-19 pandemic. During the classroom activities, the teachers give clear instruction. After giving the instruction, the teachers ensure all students notice and understand all instruction given by the teachers. The teachers use suitable time in delivering the material. By choosing suitable time, the teachers can easy in delivering the material. When giving the instructions, the teachers give clear instructions by using easy language to be understood by the students. After giving the instruction, the teachers check the students understanding by giving feedback in the form of instruction given.

Abstract

English language learning in higher education plays a crucial role in supporting students' academic and professional readiness, especially in the era of globalization. However, students from non-English majors often face difficulties due to teaching materials that are not aligned with their contexts and specific needs. The available textbooks tend to be generic and do not adequately support meaningful and applicable learning. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a contextual English textbook based on the ADDIE model that is relevant to the needs of students across various disciplines. This study aims to design an English textbook using the ADDIE model for non-English study programs at Universitas PGRI Banyuwangi. The research employs a Research and Development (R&D) approach. Based on the results of questionnaires, interviews, and documentation, it was found that approximately 85% of students from non-English majors are at a beginner level in English proficiency. Nevertheless, 90% of them are highly motivated to improve their English skills to an advanced level in order to meet academic and career demands. Regarding learning material needs, around 88% of students expressed the need for content that is relevant to their respective majors and professional fields. The preferred types of materials include authentic texts (75%), new vocabulary (68%), and context-based exercises (70%). Students' preferences for learning activities also revealed clear tendencies. About 80% preferred pair or group discussions, while 85% expected an active and collaborative classroom atmosphere. In addition, 78% of students stated that receiving direct feedback from lecturers is very important in the learning process. In terms of learning outcomes, 82% of students were able to translate texts relevant to their major, 76% could identify academic text types, and 74% showed improvements in reading and speaking skills. The findings also indicate that 92% of students experience a gap between their initial abilities and the expected level of English proficiency. Therefore, it is essential to develop a textbook based on needs analysis and the contextual ADDIE model to bridge this gap and provide a more relevant and meaningful learning experience for students across disciplines.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out whether using Webtoon Comics has an effect on reading comprehension of procedure text. This research used a quantitative research method with a one-group pre-test and post-test pre-experimental research design. The respondents were 34 students in seventh grade. The researcher gave the students a pre-test before giving the treatment, and the post-test was given after the students received treatment from the researcher. In this research, the data was collected by giving a test. The T-test analysis formula was used in this research to determine the difference between the average of the post-test and the pre-test in the experimental class. The T-test was analyzed and interpreted with the degree of signification level was 5% with df = 33, and the t-table was 2.034. The result of the T-test analysis was 10.092. It means that the T-test (10.092) was higher than the t-table (2.034) in the significance of 5%. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the use of Webtoon Comics as learning media was effective for learning reading comprehension

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian ini melibatkan dosen sebagai juri lomba PILDACIL Bahasa Inggris pada PORSENI MI tingkat Kabupaten Banyuwangi. Kegiatan bertujuan meningkatkan kualitas penjurian melalui keterlibatan akademisi, penyusunan rubrik penilaian standar, serta pelaksanaan technical meeting. Hasilnya, lomba berlangsung objektif, edukatif, dan transparan. Rubrik penilaian disusun berdasarkan pendekatan pedagogis anak usia MI, mencakup aspek materi, struktur isi, artikulasi, performa, etika, dan kreativitas. Technical meeting berperan penting dalam menyelaraskan pemahaman teknis antarpihak. Pengabdian ini menjawab kebutuhan mitra terhadap juri profesional, standar penilaian, dan pemahaman teknis lomba. Kegiatan ini dapat direplikasi di daerah lain sebagai model kemitraan akademik untuk mendukung dakwah dan literasi multibahasa pada anak. Laporan ini menjadi luaran akademik yang bermanfaat bagi pengembangan lomba serupa secara berkelanjutan dan profesional.

Abstract

This research described about an analysis of Syntactical Errors in writing cause and effect paragraphs made by the 2nd semester students of English Educational Department at PGRI University of Banyuwangi. The purpose of this research was to analyze the types and the dominant forms of Syntactical Errors in students’ cause and effect paragraphs. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data. The sources of data in this research were cause and effect paragraphs made by 2nd semester students of English Educational Department at PGRI University of Banyuwangi. The researcher used Politzer and Romirez’s theory as a base for analyze the Syntactical Errors of the data. From the analysis, the researcher discovered that there were 45 different types of Syntactical Errors based on the data analysis and discussion. Students made errors in 33 types of noun phrases and 12 types of verb phrases. The errors can be percentage to 73% of noun phrases and 27% of verb phrases. From the percentages, the errors are dominated by noun phrases by 73% of the total Syntactical Errors found in writing cause and effect paragraphs made by the 2nd Semester Students of English Educational Department at PGRI University of Banyuwangi.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine whether there is an effect of using Miming Game on Vocabulary Mastery. This research used quantitative research method with pre-test and post-test one-group pre-experimental design. The respondents of this research were 19 seventh grade students. The researcher gave a pre-test to students. The pre-test was administered prior to the implementation of the treatment, whereas the post-test was conducted following the completion of the intervention delivered by the researcher. Data collection in this study was carried out through the administration of these tests. T-test analysis formula was used in this research to determine the average difference of post-test and pre-test in the experimental class. The t-test was analyzed and applied interpreted with a significance degree of 5% with df = 19, and obtained a t-table of 1.734. The result of the t-test analysis is 1.7911. This means that the t-test (1.7911) is higher than the t-table (1.734) at 5% significance. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that the use of Miming Game as a learning media is effective for vocabulary mastery.
