Abstract

Abstract ?   This study seeks to understand the behavior that leads to obesity among young adult women in Jakarta, guided by Theory of Reasoned Action (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1975) and Self-Efficacy Theory (Bandura, 1986) as the framework. This study employed qualitative methodology, participated by three female participants (27-31 years old) and resided in Jakarta area. The results show that although participants were from various background; all of them have similarities in many behavioral aspects that leads to them being obesed. In particular, participants developed an attitude that eating was their coping mechanisms during stress. Related to the subjective norms aspect, participants perceived support from their close relatives but was not demonstrated through the real action. Negative mood and the lack of knowledge about healthy behavior affected their self-efficacy. Biological and environment factors play a pivotal role in shaping obesity. Practically termed, this study outlined a need for tailoring an intervention program that focuses on the attitude, subjective norm, and self-efficacy in reshaping behavior of people, particularly women, with obesity.

Abstract

A parental strategy in relation to the influence of media usage (parental mediation), in this case that of the Internet on adolescents, is greatly needed. The ideal strategy is a combination of active mediation (discussion regarding the content), and restrictive mediation (determination of rules for media usage), however what is normally employed is still restrictive mediation and co-using mediation (the joint use of media with the child, but without parent-child interaction to explain media content and impact). In this research, the aim was to look at an illustration of parental mediation towards the child. Quantitative research, with purposive sampling was conducted, on 94 parents and 423 information technology-based junior high school students, using questionnaires based upon the Perceived Parental Media Mediation Scale (the reliability of the parental scale being .84, and that of the student scale being .84). From frequency analysis and correlation testing, it was found that the strategy of restrictive mediation was the dominant one used by parents. This was supported by the perceptions of the students. Types of employment, numbers of children, and education levels did not influence the type of parental mediation; however, the greater the ages of parents, the greater was the imposition of restrictions. From the research, a picture may be gained of the allocation of devices to students. Explanation is required, to parents, of the importance of active mediation, and the positive utilization of I.T. devices (hereinafter called ‘devices’) by students.

Abstract

These days, regular students’ behaviors still reflect a low acceptance of students with special educational needs (SEN). Previous studies have revealed that the crucial factors to examine are regular students’ knowledge about disabilities and attitudes. This study aims to determine the extent to which these two factors contribute to their acceptance of SEN. This quantitative research was conducted on 1248 participants from 14 public junior high schools in DKI Jakarta. Multiple linear regression analysis was run to determine peer acceptance from knowledge about disabilities and attitude. These variables statistically significantly contributed to peer acceptance, F(2, 1245) = 612.951, p < .05, R2 = .496. Both variables added statistically significantly to peer acceptance, p < .05. While both knowledge and attitude matter in peer acceptance towards SEN, implications for practice should also involve developing an intervention program that not only focuses on knowledge only but also targeting positive changes in attitudes. Keywords: peer acceptance, special educational needs students, adolescent, public schools

Abstract

Ease of accessing information through internet causes primary school-age children to be vulnerable to exposure to matters related to sexuality and pornography. The limitations of parents and teachers in providing sexuality education leads to premature sexual behavior in primary school students. This study aims to explain the description of knowledge about sexuality in the students of grade IV-VI in SD N, which has a Buddhist background. Buddhism itself does not view sexuality as a wrong thing, but it takes awareness and self-control in dealing with it. Quantitative methods were carried out with a questionnaire involving 188 students. Furthermore, the qualitative method was conducted with group interviews of 12 students representatives. The results obtained are the majority of students in grade IV-VI in elementary school still have knowledge of sexuality in the low category. Differences in the level of knowledge appear to be influenced by the source of information obtained. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an appropriate school-based sexuality education and cultural context to students in grade IV-VI at SD N in Jakarta. Keywords: Sexuality education, elementary school, Buddhism school

Abstract

The exposure to matters related to sexuality and pornography makes sexuality education for elementary students an important thing to do. The goals are to equip and empower young people with the information, skills and positive values, and to make young people understand and responsible for their sexuality health and wellbeing. Cases relating to the issue of sexuality have begun to appear in students of grade 4-6 at SD N, but teachers appear not to have fully applied sexuality education to their students. This study aims to get an idea about teacher’s intention, included teacher’s attitude toward behavior, subjective norm, and perceived behavior control in teaching sexuality to grade 4-6 students. The research design used in this study is mixed-method design. The number of participants of this study are 20 people (50% male and 50% female) with age range from 24 years old to 42 years old. The results showed that the majority of teachers (55%) have moderate intention, high attitude toward behavior (80%), moderate subjective norm (80%) and moderate perceived behavior control (65%). The results also showed that only perceived behavior control has a significant relationship with the intention (r= .617, p<0.05).
