Abstract

Nangka kuning leaves (Vincetoxicum villosum Blume) are widely used by the community as a traditional medicine but research on nangka kuning leaves is still very limited so that it has great potential for the development of herbal medicine. This study used two bacteria representing gram-positive and gram-negative groups. From the gram-positive group, one of the most common bacteria that can cause disease is the Enterococcus faecalis. Then from the gram-negative group used Pseudomonas aeruginosa which is the most common cause of opportunistic infections in hospitalized patients. To test the antibacterial activity of the ethanol extract, bacteria were divided into 8 groups, namely the positive control group with chloramphenicol, the negative control group with 10% Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent, and 6 treatment groups using 12.5% ethanol extract; 15%; 17.5%; 20%; 22.5%; 25%. Bacterial culture was carried out using media and incubated for 24 hours at 37oC. Enterococcus faecalis bacteria used Trypticase Soy Both (TSB) media and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa bacteria used Trypticase Soy Agar (TSA) media. The optimal inhibition for Enterococcus faecalis bacteria is in the ethanol extract of Vincetoxicum Villosum Blume with a concentration of 25% and for Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the ethanol extract of Vincetoxicum Villosum Blume with a concentration of 15%.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia ranks fifth in the world with diabetes and diabetes cases are expected to increase continuously. The treatment of diabetes is taking medication and modifying life style. Herbal medicine is used as an additional or substitute drug for diabetes because of its efficacy and has few side effects. Guava leaf is one of the traditional plants that are widely used by the community. Guava leaves have been used as a treatment for diabetes and hypertension in South Africa. Secondary metabolites found in guava leaves such as flavonoids, phenolics and terpenoids were found to have antidiabetic activity. Previous studies have been conducted, but there was no systematic literature review that discussed the efficacy of the antidiabetic effect administration of guava leaves on experimental animals comprehensively. Methods: This systematic literature review was conducted on three databases, namely Pubmed, Cochrane and Elsevier. Duplicate and irrelevant studies are eliminated, abstracts are screened and followed by reading the entire articles to select journals that fit the inclusion criteria. Critical appraisal uses Joana Brigs Institute tool. Results: There were three articles met the criterias. The result of the three studies showed that administration of guava leaf extract is reported able to reduce blood glucose level and improve sensitivity insulin. Conclusion: Administration of guava leaf extract significantly reduce blood glucose level and improve insulin sensitivity on animal laboratory.

Abstract

The incessant socialization of the government regarding health protocols to a new life order has resulted in most Indonesians becoming introspective in maintaining cleanliness. However, some of the community also experienced panic, so that they acted unnaturally by buying up more goods than they needed, including hand sanitizers. This is one of the reason the price of hand sanitizers has increased. That’s why people need to know how to make hand sanitizers so that they are no longer worry about the scarcity of hand sanitizers and can make their own hand sanitizers. The purpose of this activity is to meet the needs of residents for hand sanitizer as an antiseptic with WHO standards. The method used in training in making hand sanitizers in a direct demonstration. Demonstrations are also supported by a PowerPoint and video that is displayed repeatedly with the help of an LCD projector. This was done to repeat the key points of the demonstration sp that a good level of understanding was achieved by the citizens. Then the Citizen representativeswere asked to repeat the demonstration so that the activities of seeingm listening and practicing the knowledge  of making hand sanitizers were completed. Then at the end of the event, an evaluation was carried out using the discussion or question and answer method. The results of the training in making hand sanitizers have helped meet the needs of residents for hand sanitizers, helped residents to be more independent in meeting their needs for hand sanitizers, and increased knowledge and skills of residents regarding making hand sanitizers as WHO standard antiseptics

Abstract

Extraction of a plant in traditional medicine is a very crucial stage for the success of the treatment. For example, nangka kuning (Vincetoxicum villosum (Blume) Kuntze) which has been scientifically researched, its leaves are extracted with ethanol solvent using the maceration method. Meanwhile, by local people, nangka kuning leaves are processed by boiling using water. This attracted the attention of researchers to re-analyze the content of secondary metabolites in nangka kuning leaf extract made with different solvents and methods. Researchers carried out the extraction using water with heating (infusion), ethanol without heating (maceration) and chloroform without heating (maceration). The results obtained from the three types of extracts contained secondary metabolites of alkaloids in the three extracts. While steroids are only found in extracts with a water solvent. Then the tannins are found in the extract with water and ethanol as solvents. Negative results from the three extracts were shown for secondary metabolites of flavonoids and saponins. So it can be concluded that nangka kuning leaf extract which has the most optimal secondary metabolite is the extract using water as a solvent by heating.
