Abstract

The aims of this research are (1) to inventory and classify the corpus of the Javanese palilinḍon text and (2) to compare the palilinḍon text of Merapi Merbabu with the Primbon Palinḍon Kraton Yogyakarta text. The primary data of this study are the text of Palilinḍon, 29 L 328 (copied at Merapi Merbabu) and the text of Sĕrat Primbon Palintangan Palinḍon Pakĕdutan Add 12311 (copied at Yogyakarta Palace). The secondary data of this study are a cataloges containing information about manuscripts stored in libraries and museums in Indonesia and abroad. This research method is modern philology. There are 13 texts containing Javanese texts about palilinḍon. The 13 texts can be classified into two groups, the first copied at Merapi Merbabu and the second copied outside the Merapi Merbabu environment. Each group was taken one, namely Palilinḍon 29 L 328 which was copied at Merapi Merbabu and Primbon Palintangan Palinḍon Pakĕdutan Add 12311 which was copied in Yogyakarta Palace to be compared. Broadly speaking, the contents of the two texts are the same, namely containing information about events that followed the earthquake that occurred on the 12th month of Java. This proves the two texts are very strong connected. In the limited context of the Palilinḍon text, the connection of both of texts indicates the connection of both of scriptorium. Even though there are differences in word choices in the both of texts. In the text Palilinḍon 29 L 328 it is stated that if an earthquake occurs in a particular month, disaster will happen to the nagara while in the Primbon Palinḍon text Add 12311 it is stated that if an earthquake occurs in a particular month, the disaster will strike the desa. Nagara refers to the center, while the desa refers to the periphery. Nagara is the central representation, the residence of nobles and officials, if the negara is damaged the palace is also damaged. In the court's view this should not happen, then in Primbon Palinḍon Add 12311 the word 'nagara' was removed and the word ‘desa' was added as an object of disaster sufferers.

Abstract

This ethnolinguistic analysis delves into the world of Panakawan characters in the Javanese play "Semar Mbangun Kahyangan," unveiling the profound tapestry of Javanese philosophy into their portrayal. The Panakawan, celebrated for their wit and linguistic artistry, stand as iconic figures in traditional Javanese wayang (shadow puppetry) and theater. This study explored their linguistic and cultural dimensions, illuminating their role as carriers of Javanese wisdom and cultural values. Employing ethnolinguistic methods, it examined the linguistic features, discourse patterns, and cultural intricacies interwoven within the dialogues and actions of the Panakawan characters. The analysis uncovers language's role in conveying Javanese philosophical concepts, moral teachings, and the interconnectedness of life and society within the play. It dissected the linguistic strategies, humor, and linguistic playfulness of the Panakawan, revealing their capacity to impart profound philosophical messages while captivating audiences. Furthermore, this study also revealed the inseparable bond between language, culture, and the embodiment of Javanese philosophy in the play "Semar Mbangun Kahyangan." It offers insights into the Panakawan's function as cultural emissaries and guardians of the Javanese ethos. This ethnolinguistic exploration extends an invitation to readers to uncover the concealed Javanese philosophy within the eloquent expressions and deeds of the Panakawan. It is expected to provide a significant contribution to ethnolinguistics, cultural studies, and philosophy by spotlighting the Panakawan characters' pivotal role as conduits for conveying the profound philosophy that shapes Javanese culture and character.

Abstract

This research aims to compare the text contained in the Palintangan Palindhon Pakedutan Primbon Manuscript (Add 12311) in the collection of the British Library, which is in Javanese language, with the Kutika Ugi' Sakke Rupa (PRI/15/MMK/KKT 1530) in the collection of the Mulawarman Museum, East Kalimantan, which is in Bugis language. Both manuscripts contain text containing information on the quality of the days of the month. Both texts have the characteristics of primbon, namely a Javanese literary genre that contains various knowledge. Even though the Bugis people do not know the word primbon, the closeness of the Kutika Ugi' Sakke Rupa text to the Primbon Palintangan Palindhon Pakedutan shows that there is a connection between the two cultures that has been going on for a long time. Before the term primbon was known by Javanese people, namely during the Kawi era, the cross-culture was one of the impacts of trade activities on the spice route. Through the spice route, the two cultures are connected. The similarities and differences found in the two texts reinforce that the relationship between Javanese and Bugis is not only diplomatic but can also be found through material culture. This connection also explains that the similarities between the two are a monogenesis phenomenon.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the significance of the interpretation of the animal element in the manuscript Jav 24, which contains the text Jayalengkara Wulang, and its relevance to the main doctrine of Javanese leadership, namely Asta Brata. This investigation involves qualitative research using the hermeneutic phenomenological approach of Paul Ricouer. This study limits the interpretation to the illumination elements depicting three animals, namely elephants, lions and crocodiles. As an illuminating element in the text, the elephant represents strength, the lion represents protection from disturbances from the land, and the crocodile represents protection from disturbances from the water. In other words, the animal images as enlightenment elements in this text represent strength and protection. Strength and protection are two of the eight most important Javanese leadership teachings summarized in Asta Brata. Illumination is another manifestation of text so that there is a message contained in this illumination. In order for the message manifested in this illumination to reach the reader, it is necessary to present these illuminations in a more popular form.
