Abstract

This study aims to develop a risk assessment tool for sexual violence recidivism in incarcerated individuals in Indonesia, considering both static and dynamic factors. Data analysis showed a strong positive correlation between recidivism and "Prior Sexual Offenses" (0.554) and the total static factor score (0.251). The frequency of sexual violence also moderately correlated with recidivism (0.232). Certain static factors had better predictive capabilities for identifying recidivism, while others showed lower predictive power. Regarding dynamic factors, the study found strong positive correlations with deviant sexual lifestyle (0.741) and sexual compulsivity (0.676), and weaker correlations with Interpersonal Aggression (0.505) and attitude towards criminal behavior (0.286). The total static and dynamic factor scores had a significantly positive and strong correlation (0.872), highlighting their importance in predicting recidivism. The AUC analysis indicated good predictive capabilities for recidivism in certain dynamic factors like interpersonal aggression and emotional self-control, while others had lower predictive abilities. Overall, the combined total score of static and dynamic factors yielded higher predictive capabilities (AUC=0.783). This research contributes to the development of an accurate risk assessment tool for sexual violence recidivism, aiding in identifying high-risk offenders and designing effective rehabilitation programs to prevent future recidivism.

Abstract

The implementation of correctional revitalization is not only related to structural adjustments and security protocols at Super Maximum Security (SMAX), Maximum Security (MAX), and Medium Security (MS) correctional facilities; it may also have an impact on changes in officer-inmate interaction patterns and the psychological stress officers. After the implementation of institutional revitalization, this study intends to investigate the patterns of officer-inmate interaction and the levels of stress experienced by correctional institution personnel in Nusakambangan with various degrees of security. Eight officers were interviewed as part of the research approach, which involved descriptive qualitative analysis, in four prisons on Nusakambangan Island. The analysis's findings give an example of the many ways that SMAX, MAX, and MS prison guards and convicts engage with one another. Because of restrictions on prisoners' freedom of movement, the implementation of security measures, and disparities in treatment within the development program, different interaction patterns result. Comparing convicts in XMAX and MAX prisons to those in MS prisons, authorities believe that MS prisoners spend more time outside of their rooms engaging in activities, which could compromise security and order. The result is that because inmates in MS prisons are free to roam the facility, but inmates in SMAX and MAX prisons engage in more activities in their quarters, the stress level for officers in MS prisons is higher than the stress level in SMAX and MAX prisons.

Abstract

There have been several violent incidents in the Correctional Unit. One of them in West Sumatra, where the Legal Aid Institute in Padang recorded three cases during the current year in 2019, occurred in Pariaman Class II-B of Correctional Institution. Similar incidents occurred in 2018 in which children in correctional institutions were recorded as experiencing physical, psychic, and sexual violence. The Indonesian Commission for the Protection of Children found that 26.8 percent of children in Special Children’s Prison were victims of violence in 2018. There has been widespread media coverage of officers’ violence and complex correctional problems in the last three years. Based on the literature study and unstructured interviews with correctional officers, several factors cause officers’ violence to prisoners. The following factors are the punitive attitude of correctional officers to prisoners and the lack of human rights knowledge, Standard Minimum Rules (SMR), and correctional officers’ correctional technicalities. In this study, the method used was descriptive qualitative research. Descriptive qualitative research is a form of research that includes a case study of an event. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. Case studies are intended to test research questions and problems in which there is no separation of phenomena and context in the spectacle. This study explores the factors that trigger officers to commit violence against correctional inmates. Many things cause violent behavior, such as stress, psychic problems, and soon.

Abstract

One of the challenges in the correctional system is the negative stigma associated with clients and released inmates, making it difficult for inmates to integrate positively into society. Until now, there has been no method to assess the extent of the community's attitudes towards released or parolee inmates in a specific region. This research aims to test the validity and reliability of the Attitudes Towards Prisoners (ATP) scale in the Indonesian language. Developed by Melvin, the ATP scale has been validated and demonstrated good trial reliability, with excellent consistency when tested in various countries. The adaptation of this instrument involved steps such as Forward-Backward Translation, instrument panel testing based on translation results, instrument revisions, content validity, back translation, instrument approval, data collection, and instrument reliability. For testing the validity and reliability, the scale was distributed online using Google Forms to 224 respondents, including correctional groups, students, the general public, and correctional officers. The results of the ATP scale's validity test found that 35 items were valid, while 1 item was not valid, with a Cronbach's Alpha value of 0.917. The findings of this study recommend the use of the ATP as a supporting instrument in assessing the community's attitudes towards released inmates and further research in the field of inmate integration.

Abstract

Religiosity is critical in improving a person's self-control ability and preventing a person from committing a crime. However, studies of the dimensions of religiosity that can play a role in private religious practice are still limited. This study aims to find the relationship between the dimensions of intellectual and ideology with private practice in religiosity. This study involved three hundred samples of prisoners with measurements of intellectual dimensions, ideology, and private practices using the Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS). The correlation test concluded that intellectual and ideology are significantly associated with private practice. The intellectual dimension shows a more potent effect size on private practice than the ideology dimension. This study recommends the need for intellectual and ideological religious guidance programs for inmates in correctional institutions as an effort to increase self-control and prevent the residivisme

Abstract

Children who get a criminal verdict and carry out sentences in LPKA will get various problems and cause anxiety in the process of interacting with individuals and groups of fostered children and officers. The anxiety felt by children in LPKA is due to the limitations and freedoms that are restricted and require time to adapt to their new environment. The condition of foster children whose space is limited has an impact on their psychology, which can cause anxiety. Children are sentenced to punishment not without cause but for the actions they have committed so that they serve their sentence in LPKA. The correctional officers, by using the parenting approach, will help foster children to accept the conditions that are being experienced and provide motivation for foster children to still have a spirit of life and try to improve themselves. Officers can play a role like parents to provide parenting to foster children through coaching and education undertaken by children while in LPKA, which will be able to affect the mental and psychological condition of children. Abstract

This study aims to explore the irrational beliefs experienced by prisoners at the Class IIA Jember Correctional Institution, specifically related to anxiety that arises before release. Prisoners often face psychological disorders, including anxiety, which are triggered by various factors, such as the length of the sentence and uncertainty about life after release. The research method used was qualitative with a case study approach, involving three prisoners who experienced anxiety before release. The results of the interviews revealed the existence of irrational thought patterns, such as catastrophizing, where prisoners imagine the worst scenario related to social rejection and difficulty adapting after returning to society. The findings show that the anxiety experienced by prisoners is closely related to two types of irrational beliefs, namely catastrophizing and personalization, which contribute to increased anxiety that interferes with prisoners' mental health.
