Abstract

The issue of homosexuality and LGBTQ+ themes is growing rapidly in literary works and other media. This research aims to describe the main characters and stages in identity formation in the Netflix series Heartstopper season 1. This research adopts descriptive qualitative methods and focuses on dialogue and scenes by Nick Nelson and Charlie Springs as the main characters. Data collection is done by observation and documentation techniques. The selected data will be analyzed by classifying them into each part of characterization and stage of identity formation, then interpreting them in a narrative form. By using M.J. Murphy's theory, researchers found that there are 8 of 9 methods that reveal the personality of the main characters: personal description, speech, character seen by another, past life, reactions, thoughts, mannerisms, and conversation of others, while there is no direct comment is found. By using Fassinger’s theory, researchers found that Nick went through 4 stages of identity formation: awareness, exploration, deepening, and internalization while Charlie had reached the internalization stage since the beginning of the show. The findings shed light on the characterization as an intrinsic element of literary work and the intricacies of adolescent identity formation, particularly in the context of LGBTQ+ experiences.

Abstract

Indonesia has many tribes and produces many traditions. Tradition is a reflection of certain community cultures. One of them is the Mengetong tradition at the wedding ceremony of the Minang Pariaman community in Medan. This research is initiated by the distinction of this tradition which causes controversy. As a brief overview, Mengetong is when the amount of money given to the bride and groom is read aloud during the wedding reception. The initial perception of this research is to present an opinion based on empirical evidence that this tradition has a positive value rather than a negative one. This research applies the performance theory and local wisdom value theory. The data are in the form of text, and co-text taken from the video recordings of the Mengetong activity, supporting documents, and an interview with a customary holder. The results show that Mengetong is included in five elements of performance; 1) specific schedule, 2) specific instruments, 3) non-profitable, 4) having certain rules, and 5) being carried out in a specific location. This result indicated that Mengetong is indeed a tradition performed at a specific time, using specific instruments/tools, not a profit-oriented activity, applying specific rules in action and done by certain tribes. Moreover, local wisdom identifies this tradition as a social value in cooperation and reciprocity activity. This result also portrays the togetherness (gotong-royong) characteristic of Indonesian people. In the end, this study claimed that Mengetong in the Pariaman Wedding ceremony is meant to help each other when a family conduct a wedding ceremony.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to prove that modification of the interjection ‘Aiya’ [哎呀] at certain intonation signals a different attitude. As a result, this study focuses on the different emotional expressions that the Chinese word aiya might convey. Re-searchers employed recording methods with the PRAAT application. Furthermore, the researcher presented 40 respondents who were Mandarin students to give a direct as-sessment of the original and the manipulated interjection. The perception test is carried out by playing five interjection utterances without telling the respondent which sound is the initial utterance. The first sentence has the results of happy emotional attitudes. When it is raised and lowered to 4 semitones, there is a balanced variation of emotions. However, when it was raised to 8 semitones, the test results show an emotional attitude of disappointment, and when lowered to 8 semitones, showed an emotional attitude of impressed. An increase of one tone point can create a positive impression. Then, if there is a decrease, it will make a negative impression. However, because of the vast variation in everyone's perception, generating these conclusions is still impossible. This is where the suggestion appears for future researchers to continue this research and make this research a reference.
