Abstract

This study investigates the patterns and functions of code-switching in English learning at MTs Amin Darussalam, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through classroom observations, audio recordings, and interviews with eighth-grade students during the 2025/2026 academic year. The analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s framework, focusing on data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. Findings reveal three main types of code-switching: inter-sentential, intra-sentential, and tag switching, with inter-sentential switching being the most frequent. Teachers primarily used code-switching to explain lessons, clarify meanings, and manage classroom interaction, while students employed it to overcome vocabulary limitations and enhance self-expression. Tag-switching served to seek confirmation and maintain classroom rapport. Overall, code-switching was found to facilitate comprehension, build confidence, and create a supportive learning environment. The study concludes that code-switching is a natural and effective communicative strategy in bilingual classrooms.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to analyze how using the Duolingo app has affected the speaking abilities of seventh-grade students at SMPS Nur Hasanah Medan. The research used a qualitative descriptive approach which included five students as subject of the research. Information was gathered through observation and interviews. The result suggest that using Duolingo has helped improve students' speaking skills, especially their confidence and pronunciation. Most students expressed that they enjoyed learning with Duolingo because it provided a fun, non-threatening, and interactive learning environment. Students demonstrated noticeable improvements in fluency, vocabulary use, and motivation to speak English. However, some challenges remained, especially in terms of spontaneous speech and constructing complex sentences. In other words, Duolingo can be an effective supplementary tool in improving students’ English-speaking skills, though it should be accompanied by guided instruction to develop deeper communication competence.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to develop the English speaking materials for Vocational High School students based on discussion method at Muhammadiyah Vocational School 10 Kisaran. The data of this research are quantitative and qualitative. The researcher uses the percentage of the questionnaire of need analysis for the quantitative data. Meanwhile, for the qualitative, the researcher uses the content analysis for describing the data. The data is collected by using questionnaire and material (textbook). The result of needs analysis showed two parts, those were target needs and learning needs. After gathering the need analysis, the researcher formulated a course grid and wrote the first draft of the speaking materials. The speaking materials based on Project-Based learning contains of two units, those were: “Do You Agree with That? Giving Your Opinion” and “To Whom is the Letter Addressed?”. The researcher implemented ADDIE model for developing the materials. As the result, the researcher finds some error and lacks in the students’ text book. In order to maintain the students’ needs and the components of speaking, the researcher develop the material which has been verified by the expert. After getting the revision on the final product, the researcher finds that the materials can give the significant effect to the students’ speaking skills.

Abstract

This research aims to know: 1) The effect of scientific approach on students' ability to write short stories in class VIII of SMP Swasta Muhammadiyah 25 Rantau Parapat Labuhan Batu Regency learning year 2023-2024; 2) The difference in students' ability to write short stories with learning using the scientific approach with the Contectual Learning Teaching (CTL) approach in class VIII of SMP Swasta Muhammadiyah 25 Rantau Parapat Labuhan Batu Regency learning year 2023-2024. The population in this study were class VIII students of SMP Swasta Muhammadiyah 25 Rantau Parapat Labuhan Batu Regency for the learning year 2023-2024 as many as 7 classes, each class of 36 people. The population of this research is 252 people. The sampling technique used is the classter random sampling technique. The research sample consisted of 2 classes, namely a control class and an experimental class, each of which consisted of 36 children. Data collection techniques with instruments in the form of data tests of students' abilities in writing short stories. This research uses quantitative methods with a pseudo-experimental approach. The data analysis technique used is the t-test with two tailed paired sample t-test (two paired samples) at a significant level of α = 0.05. The results of hypothesis testing showed that: (1) There is an influence of scientific approach on students' ability to write short stories in class VIII of SMP Swasta Muhammadiyah 25 Rantau Parapat. This is known based on the t-test of scientific approach in the pre-test and post-test is (tcount 2.54> ttable 1.99). While in the CTL approach during the pre-test and post-test based on the t-test results found that (tcount 0.05 < ttable 1.99); (2) There is a difference in students' ability to write short stories with learning using a scientific approach with an approach that uses a CTL approach.

Abstract

Culture is an activity that is carried out by the community repeatedly and becomes the basis for behavior, not only seen as a work or idea which then becomes a cultural object such as art or tools and other objects that reflect an area. Therefore, preserving adat is important for the people. One of the efforts made is through oral tradition. The purpose of this research is to look at efforts to preserve the traditional marriage traditions of Sibolga- Central Tapanuli ethnic through oral tradition. This study applies a qualitative approach that aims to describe the description of the phenomenon of the variables studied. To describe the variables of this study, the data used consisted of primary data through interviews with informants and secondary data obtained from books or records that explained the implementation of the traditional Sibolga-Central Tapanuli ethnic marriage. The instruments used to collect data consisted of interviews and observation sheets. After the data is collected, the data is then analyzed through a process of data reduction and data interpretation. Based on the results of observations made during the research, some information was obtained that oral traditions were still effectively carried out in an effort to preserve the customs and culture of an ethnic group. Techniques that can be taken in efforts to inherit culture are through natural inheritance which is carried out by the older generation to the younger generation through the implementation of culture which can be witnessed by the younger generation. Traditional leaders through traditional institutions will continue to make efforts so that their customs and culture are passed on to the younger generation through various means, such as publishing books on customary practices, providing studios for young people to practice their ethnic arts, and providing guidance in implementing culture.

Abstract

Long prose essay novels tell about human life, the surrounding community and highlight the character and characteristics of each actor. Values give meaning to life, provide reference, starting point and purpose of life. Character is the value of kindness in the form of action or behavior. The purpose of this research is to know the character value of filial piety to parents. The method used in this research is using descriptive qualitative method. Data collection techniques are carried out by reading and understanding the data obtained. The data analysis techniques used are: Reading novels, Describing novels, Analyzing, identifying novels, Taking and compiling conclusions. The data source for this research is the novel Ibuk. This novel will be the author's main study. The results of this study concluded that there were  footage containing aspects of obeying parents,  footage containing aspects of respect, footage containing aspects of lightening the burden on parents, and footage containing aspects of serving parents. Iwan Setyawan conveys many useful character values for readers by bringing the novel's story to life.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to develop descriptive writing material, determine the validation of descriptive writing material and to increase the effectiveness of descriptive writing material by using the padlet application in teaching writing for class X students at SMK AL Washliyah 3 Medan. The research was carried out using the Development Research method, and the evaluator was an English subject teacher, and the subjects were class X students. Pre-test and post-test were carried out to determine the effectiveness of the results. The pre-test results obtained an average score of 70.15% in the satisfactory category; The post-test results show an average score of 82.15% in the very good category. The process of developing teaching materials includes three aspects of assessment: 1) development of descriptive writing materials; 2) validation of descriptive writing material and; 3) effectiveness of descriptive writing materials. Material expert validation includes content with an average score of 3.15% and percentages 4.35% in the superior category. Feasibility of presenting teaching materials has an average score of 5.67% in the superior category, and linguistic elements have an average score of 4.25% in the superior category. The conclusion shows that the design for developing descriptive text teaching materials using a scientific approach in English subjects is very effective.

Abstract

Membaca nyaring adalah kegiatan membaca yang dilakukan dengan cara mengeluarkan suara atau melafalkan setiap kata, frase dan kalimat dari bacaan dengan nada dan intonasi yang tepat agar pembaca dan pendengar mengetahui dan memahami informasi yang disampaikan oleh penulis. Oleh karena itu pemilihan pendekatan pembelajaran yang tepat sangat menentukan tingkat pencapaian siswa dalam membaca nyaring. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan rancangan pengembangan bahan  ajar membaca nyaring dengan menggunakan pendekatan whole language pada siswa kelas II SD IT Siti Khadijah Tanjung Morawa dan untuk mendeskripsikan validasi desain pengembangan bahan ajar membaca nyaring dengan menggunakan pendekatan whole language pada siswa kelas II SD IT Siti Khadijah Tanjung Morawa . Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian adalah metode deskriptif, dan dilaksanakan dengan 6 yaitu: tahap pengumpulan informasi, analisis kebutuhan, merancang prototipe, validitas prototipe, revisi prototipe, dan produk akhir. Prodak hasil pengembangan bahan ajar membaca nyaring dengan menggunakan pendekatan whole language untuk siswa kelas II SD IT Siti Khadijah Tanjung Morawa ini adalah media ajar feltboard display. Hasil presentase penilaian prototipe bahan ajar membaca nyaring dengan pendekatan whole language dari ahli materi 93,18%, dan guru 92.7%. Hasil uji coba prodak terhadap siswa 80,06% Rerata dari ketiga penilaian  adalah 88,64%. Angka tersebut menunjukkan bahwa prototipe sudah termasuk dalam kriteria baik dan sudah sesuai dengan hasil analisis kebutuhan dan penilaian ahli.

Abstract

Speaking ability is one of the important language skills for students in communicating. However, based on initial observations, many students of class XI SMA Negeri 1 Rantau Utara have difficulty in conveying ideas verbally, especially in retelling the contents of the news they watch. This is due to limited vocabulary, lack of understanding of news structure, and low self-confidence in speaking. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effectiveness of audiovisual learning methods in improving students' speaking competence. This study used an experimental method with a one group pretest-posttest design. The research sample consisted of 32 students selected by purposive sampling. The research instrument was a speaking test, which was conducted before and after treatment. Data were analyzed using a t-test to determine the significance of improving students' speaking competence. The results showed that before treatment, the average pretest score of students was 53.28 with a standard deviation of 8. After being given treatment in the form of learning with news broadcasts from YouTube channels, the average posttest score increased to 83.71 with a standard deviation of 5. The results of the t-test showed that t count (3.36) was greater than t table (2.03) at a significance level of 5%, which means that there was a significant increase in students' speaking ability. This increase indicates that the audiovisual learning method is effective in helping students understand the structure of news, improve their speaking fluency, and enrich their vocabulary. In addition, audiovisual media also increases student involvement in learning and fosters confidence in speaking. Thus, it is suggested that this method be applied in Indonesian language learning to improve students' speaking skills more optimally

Abstract

Penelitian ini berangkat dari kendala-kendala yang dialami siswa SMP Negeri 1 Pematangsiantar dalam keterampilan menulis teks cerpen. Kendala tersebut, yaitu kesulitan untuk memahami materi teks cerpen, siswa cenderung bosan dalam mempelajari materi teks cerpen. Oleh sebab itu penelitian ini berupa mencarikan solusi dengan mengembangkan bahan ajar elektronik dalam menulis teks cerpen berbasis media sosial pada siswa kelas IX SMP Negeri 1 Pematangsiantar. Pengembangan bahan ajar ini diharapkan dapat membatu siswa dalam mengatasi kendala-kendala dalam pembelajaran menulis cerpen. Metode penelitian dan pengembangan yang digunakan adalah Research and Development (R&D). Hasil analisis terhadap penilaian validator ahli dan tanggapan pengguna produk menunjukkan bahwa bahan ajar elektronik dalam menulis teks cerpen berbasis media sosial pada siswa kelas IX SMP Negeri 1 Pematangsiantar “sangat layak” untuk diterapkan dalam pembelajaran menulis teks cerpen
