Abstract

The broiler industry plays an important role in meeting the growing demand for animal protein. Ensuring favorable farming conditions are needed to maintain the meat supply, and theoretically, this can be improved through the implementation of Contract Farming (CF). CF grants farmers the privilege to predict quantities, prices, and reduce production risks. However, one of the key challenges in establishing CF is the cost efficiency and performance of farmers. This study aims to develop a cost function for farmers, identify factors contributing to inefficiency, and evaluate farmer performance. The purposive sampling method is employed to select broiler farmers participating in contract farming as the sample for this study. Primary data were collected through surveys. Stochastic frontier cost analysis is utilized to derive a broiler cost function while examining the causes of farm inefficiency and their relationship with farmers’ performance variables. The results indicate that the broiler cost function is significantly influenced by labor costs, the price of day-old chickens, feed expenses, and harvest tonnage. Meanwhile, the inefficiency effect is substantially influenced by farmer age, education, household size, experience, and mortality ratio (MR). Reducing the MR can increase broiler yield, directly improving cost efficiency and, thus farmers’ income. Nonetheless, a comprehensive approach that includes training, monitoring, feedback, and incentivization is needed to enhance farmer performance in broiler contract farming.

Abstract

Abstract

Irrigation management in Indonesia has always involved challenges. There are at least three phases in irrigation management: the rain-fed phase, technical irrigation in irrigation buildings, and technical irrigation to mitigate climate change (CC). This study investigated irrigation management based on local wisdom as a form of CC adaptation. The research was conducted in Klambu Kanan Irrigation District (KKID), where 11,005 ha of rice fields are irrigated in three regencies. The subjects of this research were 40 irrigation Water User Associations (WUAs), and the research instrument was a model that provided incentives to manage WUAs, cropping patterns, and water fees in response to CC. The results showed that CC has had impacts on rice fields in the KKID, such as mud flooding due to changes in land cover. There are two models employed by the WUAs: a “self-governance model” (SGM) and an “auction model” (AM), the latter of which is a form of management based on “network governance” (NG). The SGM emphasizes the participation of members (community-based) through social capital, while the AM emphasizes the availability of capital in irrigation management (provider-based). More than 77% of WUAs employed the SGM, while the rest employed the AM. In addition, the SGM was utilized for 180 more days per year than the AM, which was used for 47 days per year. Finally, the productivity of the SGM was higher than that of AM. Further research is needed to compare SGM and AM to confirm that SGM is more widely applied than AM.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) have a significant contribution to national economic growth and the smooth distribution of goods and services. However, market competition and national economic dynamics pose serious challenges to the sustainability of MSMEs, especially in terms of competitiveness and technological adaptation. The development of digitalization opens up great opportunities for MSMEs to increase production efficiency and expand marketing reach through online sales platforms. Unfortunately, the limited knowledge and skills of MSME actors in managing digital marketing strategies leads to low optimization of this potential. This research aims to examine the needs of MSME assistance in Bangsalsari Village, Jember Regency, in order to increase business capacity and digital marketing effectiveness. The method used is a qualitative approach through field observation and interviews with MSME actors. The results of the study show that structured and sustainable mentoring can increase business actors' understanding of digital strategies, expand market access, and encourage the creation of new jobs. Thus, technology-based assistance programs and local needs are strategic solutions in strengthening the resilience and competitiveness of MSMEs in the midst of national economic challenges.
