Abstract

Electronic Word of Mouth (e-WoM) is a form of promotion in the digital era by distributing and sharing visual content about a brand or product informally without commercial influence. This study aims to understand the enhancement of e-WoM as a promotional medium by the coffee blogger account @cafehitssurabaya. This study uses a qualitative research method with a virtual ethnographic approach. Researchers are participative and involved in e-WoM activities on @cafehitssurabaya. Data collection using virtual searches and online interviews via WhatsApp with eight informants, namely the owner of the @cafehitssurabaya account and seven active followers. The study results show that e-WoM helps disseminate visual content related to opinions, reviews, and recommendations for various coffee shops by @cafehitssurabaya so that it impacts promotions and encourages buying decisions for potential consumers. Furthermore, @cafehitssurabaya enhances e-WoM by interacting and discussing with followers as opinion seekers. This study concludes that the e-WoM process has become an effective promotional medium, forming a new culture of Instagram users to share their love for the tradition of drinking coffee and various coffees and delivering criticism and praise to different coffee shops.

Abstract

Kata-kata Kunci: film, genre, horor, komedi, Sekawan Limo

Abstract

This study highlights the role of K-pop fandom, particularly Indonesian NCTzens, in a boycott campaign against the collaboration between NCT and Starbucks conducted on the X social media platform. Framed by a sensitive geopolitical context, this research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing non-participant observation of the @nct_menfess fanbase account and in-depth interviews with seven informants selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed thematically to understand patterns of digital communication, fan content production, and the mobilization of collective campaigns in online spaces. The findings reveal that the boycott campaign carried out by Indonesian NCTzens represents a form of participatory culture that goes beyond fan support and evolves into social advocacy. Digital strategies such as hashtag activism, fan edits, memes, and real-world actions like LED truck protests demonstrate that fandom communities hold potential as active civic agents in global public discourse. This study contributes to the understanding of fandom’s role as a social force in the digital age.

Abstract

The X application facilitates the formation of virtual communities centered around shared interests, including various fan bases. Many enthusiasts of sports, music, politics, and other fields utilize X as a platform to connect and engage in discussions. Persebaya Surabaya, as the largest football supporter community in Indonesia, has an X account with the username @green_nord27. In Indonesia, football transcends being merely a sport; it has evolved into a cultural phenomenon characterized by the intense passion of its supporters. This study explores the expression of fanaticism among Bonek, the supporters of the Persebaya Surabaya club, on the X social media platform @green_nord27. The account is managed by the Green Nord 27 community, one of the largest fan bases of Persebaya. The primary aim of this study is to analyze how supporters express their fanaticism in the digital realm and to identify the factors contributing to this phenomenon. This research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach and utilizes various data collection methods, including literature review, documentation, observation, and in-depth interviews. The findings reveal that fanatical supporters demonstrate their passion not only through their physical presence in stadiums but also through active participation in digital activities and the creation of collective identities via digital symbols. This form of digital fanaticism fosters group solidarity and a strong sense of belonging within the community.

Abstract

Generation Z is an active generation that uses online media. TikTok and Telegram are two forms of online media that are often used illegally to display scene clips or full durations of Indonesian films. Cases of film piracy are increasingly easy to find on online media. This study aims to explore Generation Z's perceptions of Indonesian film piracy on TikTok and Telegram online media. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, documentation and literature studies. The study results show that Generation Z has various perceptions of film piracy, ranging from positive to negative. Film piracy can be in the form of displaying scene clips with limited durations on TikTok. Watching full-length films on Telegram is also part of the illegal distribution of films. Film piracy has the potential to harm filmmakers and does not respect copyright. However, filmmakers can still use TikTok for promotional media and attract the audience through scene clips displayed for a limited duration. The existence of video on demand can be an alternative for easy access to Indonesian films, which still need to be shown in theatres. In addition, the findings of this study explain the importance of further education on the negative impacts of piracy, increasing accessibility of legal content, and reducing dependence on pirated content through the availability of official platforms in the digital era.

Abstract

Generation Z is highly active on social media, a trend amplified during the COVID-19 pandemic due to limited social interaction. Data from the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) reveals that Generation Z constitutes the majority of internet users (34.40%). This shift in communication behavior has brought convenience but also increased cybercrime. UU No 19 Tahun 2016regulates various cybercrime issues including online gambling. Indonesia has the highest number of online gambling users globally, with around 200,000 active users. Influencer Ferry Irwandi highlights the  seriousness of this issue on his YouTube channel, which featured three new videos on the topic in September 2023. His observations underline the need for further research into the impact of online gambling on Generation Z. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using Stuart Hall's reception analysis method, focusing on Generation Z. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). The findings reveal Generation Z's reception of online gambling content on Ferry Irwandi's channel, identifying two primary perspectives: the Dominant-Hegemonic Reading Position and the Negotiated Reading Position. Generation Z recognizes online gambling as a pervasive, addictive, and destructive activity. They assert that influencers do not significantly contribute to its spread, emphasizing the importance of being selective about media consumption. Generation Z calls for decisive government action to address online gambling issues.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implications of positivism on the scientific method through a literature review. Positivism, a philosophical school developed in the 19th century by Auguste Comte, emphasizes the importance of empirical observation, verification, and objectivity in acquiring scientific knowledge. This study is important because it provides a better understanding of how positivism influenced the scientific method and how this method developed and is used in the contemporary academic world. Through this literature review, the research explores the history of positivism, its core principles, and its contributions to the scientific method in both natural and social sciences. Additionally, critiques of positivism by philosophers such as Karl Popper and Thomas Kuhn are analyzed, particularly in relation to its limitations in addressing complex and subjective phenomena. The findings indicate that while positivism has played a significant role in the development of science, the more flexible post-positivist approach is increasingly relevant in addressing contemporary scientific research challenges.

Abstract

Horror is still a popular genre in the growth of Indonesian films. Female characters are often featured iconically in the narrative of a horror film. However, there is a negative stigma about the presence of female characters in horror films who appear as antagonistic characters. Female characters often play the role of ghosts, victims of crimes, and other complementary characters. This study uses qualitative research and Roland Barthes semiotics to analyze the representation of female characters in Perempuan Tanah Jahanam. This research focuses on the main female characters in the movie. The results of this study explain the denotation that describes the female characters in Perempuan Tanah Jahanam as women who become the main characters in filling various important roles in horror films, while in the connotation there are various meanings that the main female characters have social strengths such as courage in fighting patriarchal culture, supporting fellow women, working hard and being independent, from the denotation and connotation that the author found formed a myth in the form of elements of feminism that were constructed on the four main characters in the film. Researchers found that the main female character is no longer represented as a victim or a seductive and sexy ghost. Female characters are also not used as a means of supporting the success and interests of commercialism in a horror film.

Abstract

Abstract: From the reformation period until now, Indonesian cinema has been trying to raise issues about gender equality or inequality. Gender stereotypes from the patriarchal culture that are inherent in some Indonesian people often bring gender inequalities. One of them is in the context of the division of gender roles in the family. It will not be a problem if the division does not cause gender inequalities. However, in reality there is the pressure that burdens one party. This study aims to reveal how the representation of gender roles in the film Baby Blues uses John Fiske's semiotic analysis method, which consists of three levels of analysis, reality, representation, and ideology. The study shows that gender stereotype is incorporated in both traditional and contemporary viewpoint of gender roles.. In the traditional role, men play a role in the public sector and women play a role in the domestic sector. While the new perspective tries to break it down by showing men who are starting to be domesticated from the results of the exchange of roles that happened before.
