Abstract

This study aims to examine the symbolism and philosophy in traditional Indonesian dance movements and their role in conveying social and spiritual values. Using a literature review approach, this research collects and analyzes relevant literature published between 2015 and 2024, including indexed international journals, books, and scholarly articles. Thematic analysis and content analysis are used to identify the main themes in the dance movements, such as harmony, unity, and the relationship between humans, nature, and God. The results show that traditional Indonesian dance is more than just a performing art; it serves as an important medium for transmitting profound moral values and life philosophies, such as self-control, cooperation, and inner peace. These findings highlight the need to preserve the symbolism and philosophy of traditional dance amidst globalization and modernization. The implementation of these findings can be carried out by integrating these cultural values into arts and culture education, both in formal and non-formal settings, to ensure that the younger generation not only masters dance techniques but also understands the philosophical meanings contained within them. This study provides deep insights into the importance of maintaining the relevance of traditional dance as part of the nation’s cultural identity. Keywords: Dance Philosophy, Social Values, Cultural Preservation, Symbolism, Traditional Indonesian Dance

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Performing musical compositions from various eras such as classical, modern, Malay, and popular, this violin solo recital presents a blend of interpretation, improvisation, and expressive performance using musical techniques that adhere to conventional principles. The initial preparation for the soloist before the performance includes technical exercises involving both the left and right hand techniques in solo violin playing. Each composition to be performed is analyzed in detail, especially in terms of form and structure. This process is essential for expressing each section of the composition appropriately and in accordance with the composer’s intent, particularly given that the compositions span different musical periods. This performance consists of several repertoires from different eras. The first repertoire originates from the Baroque period, spanning the 16th to 17th century, characterized by clear and structured patterns. This piece is titled Concerto in E Major No.1 "Spring" by composer Antonio Vivaldi, composed in 1725. The second repertoire is My Heart Will Go On, a popular music piece presented in a contemporary style. The third composition is Laila Canggung, created by Hamid and Amardi Raga, which is rooted in Malay cultural tradition and is expressed in accordance with Malay aesthetic values. The performer interprets and expresses each repertoire by applying various techniques such as arpeggio, trill, legato, slur, and slide, aiming to deliver a refined and complete performance.

Abstract

Background: Dialectics of character education based on local culture is conducted through the approach of cultural studies in order to comprehend meanings resulted symbolically from the phenomena of local culture. The process of character education based on local culture is a process that gives an individual the ability to give meaning toward his/herself and his/her environment. Aim: The researchers would like to analyze character education’s dialectics based on art and culture in the approach of cultural studies. Method: Literature studies related to character education studies based on local culture in Minangkabau were carried out through written and oral sources or primary and secondary sources. Qualitative methods with a multidisciplinary approach were used. Field data collection was managed in an 'etic' and 'emic' manner. The data were then analyzed using Miles and Huberman techniques. Findings: The attitude of West Sumatera government that launches the program of "back to nagari (village) and back to surau” is a proper space to rebuild an old culture that is still relevant and is developed in the society toward modern culture. Islamic culture that initially evolves in the surau should be able to be developed with bringing religious mission. The art of local people that lives and evolves in sasaran is also resurrected with bringing the mission of Minangkabau customs.
