Abstract

This research aims to identify the problems faced by students during the process of learning English speaking skills at SMA Negeri 1 Panyabungan Selatan and to find out why the problems students face become factors that hinder their English speaking ability at SMA Negeri 1 Panyabungan Selatan, specifically focusing on 12th-grade students in MIA II. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method, emphasizing the interpretation of events and the acquisition of real data to depict the actual conditions experienced by students. Primary data were collected through questionnaires and observations, focusing on the challenges students encounter in mastering English speaking skills, including low vocabulary mastery, grammatical barriers, pronunciation issues, shyness, nervousness, fear of making mistakes, lack of confidence, limited practice, the dominance of the mother tongue, and low motivation. This research was conducted over four sessions at SMA Negeri 1 Panyabungan Selatan, focusing on the MIA II class, involving 20 students, from August 30, 2024, to September 30, 2024. The findings reveal that the English-speaking skills of the 12th-grade MIA II students remain at a low level. While some students demonstrated better speaking skills, the majority struggled to express themselves in English. In-depth classroom and outside observations showed that most students were unable to convey their thoughts effectively in English. Several factors hinder students' ability to speak English effectively. A primary issue is low vocabulary mastery, which makes it difficult for students to form simple sentences and leads to struggles in finding the right words and uncertainty about pronunciation. Many students also lack a solid understanding of English grammar, resulting in frequent errors that disrupt communication and diminish their confidence. Difficulties with pronunciation further discourage participation in speaking activities due to fear of mistakes or ridicule. Additionally, limited practice, as students focus more on written tasks and rely heavily on their mother tongue in the classroom, reduces their opportunities to practice English. Lastly, low motivation affects their progress, as many students show little interest in improving their speaking skills or understanding the relevance of English proficiency. Collectively, these factors significantly limit their overall progress in speaking English fluently.

Abstract

This community service program was carried out with the aim of strengthening entrepreneurial management capacity while supporting the digitalization process of the home-based business “Donat and Kue Bawang Fatir,” located in Roburan Lombang Village. The business has been operating for approximately ten years; however, throughout its development, it has faced several challenges, including limited promotion, declining consumer numbers, and a marketing reach that remains confined to the local area. To address these issues, the KKN 24 Roburan Lombang community service team designed several strategies, including mentoring in simple business management, training in measurable financial management, and the application of digital technology through the registration and optimization of the business profile on Google Maps. These efforts are expected to provide added value for the business, particularly in improving accessibility and visibility in the digital sphere. The results of the program indicate an increased understanding of digital literacy among business owners, greater convenience for consumers in locating the business, and an expansion of the market reach beyond the village. These findings affirm that digitalization through the use of Google Maps can serve as a strategic step in ensuring the sustainability and competitiveness of small rural businesses while also creating opportunities for more inclusive and sustainable local economic development.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Three-Language Assembly Program in fostering language culture at MTsN 2 Mandailing Natal. This program is a habituation strategy that rotates the use of Indonesian, Arabic, and English during morning assemblies to create a multilingual and character-oriented educational environment. The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with 25 informants consisting of the principal, vice principal, teachers, and students, as well as documentation. Data analysis utilized the interactive model including data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the program is systematically implemented through teacher mentoring, a rotating officer system, and regular evaluations. This initiative contributes to improving students' speaking skills, self-confidence, and character development, while simultaneously strengthening their religious, national, and global identities. The main supporting factors include the consistency of the language environment and active teacher involvement, whereas challenges involve public speaking anxiety, limited vocabulary, and the suboptimal use of foreign languages outside assembly activities. These findings confirm that consistent practice and institutional support are keys to the program's success in fostering language culture in madrasah settings

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the process of internalizing disciplinary values through school culture and its impact on student character formation at MTsN 2 Mandailing Natal. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were obtained through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with the principal, teachers, and students, and documentation. The data analysis technique used the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which was carried out continuously through the stages of data condensation, data presentation, and drawing and verifying conclusions. In the data condensation stage, the researcher selected, focused, and grouped data according to the research theme. Next, the data were presented in the form of descriptive narratives to make the relationships between findings easier to understand. The final stage was carried out through drawing and verifying conclusions to ensure the consistency and validity of the data based on the results of observations, interviews, and documentation. The research findings indicate that internalization of disciplinary values is carried out through habituation, teacher role models, and reinforcement through a system of rewards and sanctions. A consistent school culture has been proven to be able to shape the character of students who are more disciplined, responsible, independent, and have prosocial behavior in the madrasah environment.

Abstract

This study is urgent because English textbooks in Indonesia play a central role in shaping readers’ linguistic development and intercultural awareness, yet existing materials are still insufficiently evaluated in terms of how culture is represented and perceived. A qualitative approach with a mixed-method analysis was employed. First method was conducted for analysing cultural content on three English educational textbooks: When English Rings a Bell for Grades VII and VIII, and Think Globally, Act Locally for Grade IX based on the frameworks of Cortazzi and Jin (1999), Silvia (2014), Moran (2001), and Yuen (2011)’s cultural model. Second method was by applying thematic analysis on result of a semi-structure interview by involving 18 respondents who are actively engaged in an academic setting from 6 different educational institutions in Indonesia to gain their cultural views on English textbooks. The findings of cultural types (the origin of culture) showed 156 appearances in total, comprising 60 (38.5%) appearances of source culture, 6 (3.8%) of target culture, 7 (4.5%) of international target culture, and 83 (53.2%) of culture-free content. Moreover, cultural elements (the forms of culture) showed 156 appearances. Of these, 107 (68.5%) were categorized as product, 43 (27.5%) as practice, 2 (1.3%) as perspective, and 4 (2.5%) as person. Thematic analysis on the data of semi-structured interview shows cultural contents were inseparably crucial integrated in English educational textbooks for users’ better understanding of English mastery and inclusive culture. Ultimately, this study recommends English educational textbooks should emphasize the integration of culturally inclusive materials to enhance readers’ English skill and promote the English non-native speakers’ engagement through culturally relevant instruction.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the Dialogic Scaffolding as a Strategic Pedagogical Framework (DSSPF) in enhancing EFL speaking competence among first-year university students. Grounded in Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory and contemporary language learning strategy research, the DSSPF integrates systematic strategic instruction within dialogic deliberation tasks (Vygotsky, 1978; Rose et al., 2024). The research employed a mixed method embedded design involving 20 Basic Speaking students at STAIN Mandailing Natal over 15 weeks. Data were collected through classroom observations (15 sessions), pre-post speaking assessments, semi-structured interviews, and student reflective journals. Quantitative analysis revealed significant improvements in strategic speaking competence, with a large effect size in communication strategy use frequency (t (19) = 4.86, p < .001, d = 1.08) and speech rate (t (19) = 3.92, p < .001, d = 0.87). Qualitative analysis identified three key lecturer mediation moves, namely meta-strategic prompting, dialogic weaving and contingent feedback, that facilitated students’ transition from formulaic to strategic discourse production. Thematic analysis of interview data yielded five emergent themes: developing strategic awareness, reducing speaking anxiety, growing dialogic confidence, appreciating localized content and recognizing the lecturer’s role as a strategic mediator. The DSSPF offers a practical pedagogical model for integrating language learning strategies into communicative language teaching, addressing the persistent gap between strategy instruction and authentic language use in EFL contexts.
