Abstract

This study aims to find out what the students' interest is in learning English, to find out what the students' English learning achievement is, and to find out whether or not there is any correlation between the students' interest in learning English and their learning achievement. The method used was quantitative with a sample of 32 students of class VIII'6 using a random sampling technique. In obtaining data, researchers used questionnaires and documentation methods as research instruments. The results of data analysis show that students' interest in learning English and their English learning achievement fall into the high category, and the correlation between students' interest in learning English and their learning achievement has a positive correlation. The proof is with the F value of student learning interest and student learning achievement is 0.003 <0.05. Therefore, H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. So, it is concluded that the correlation between students' interest in learning English and their learning achievement in English language learning in class VIII'6 SMPN 18 Makassar.

Abstract

This study explores the strategies used by EFL students to overcome challenges in the Structure and Written Expression section of the TOEFL ITP test. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method. The data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with five English Department students at Universitas Negeri Makassar who had previously taken the TOEFL ITP. The findings reveal that students adopted a range of self-developed strategies to address common difficulties, such as regular practice, active vocabulary-building, understanding TOEFL question formats, strengthening grammar skills, improving time management, boosting self-confidence, and setting clear goals. These findings are further reinforced by relevant literature. In conclusion, EFL students at Universitas Negeri Makassar actively develop effective strategies to mitigate the challenges and enhance their test performance.

Abstract

This study evaluates the impact of the Debate technique on enhancing the speaking skills of students, specifically in vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. Conducted at SMA IT Wahdah Islamiyah Makassar, the research employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test setup, involving 20 students from Class XI.2 selected via cluster random sampling. Data were gathered through speaking tests administered before and after the intervention, with the Debate technique applied over four sessions. Data analysis revealed a significant improvement in speaking skills, with the mean score rising from 63 in the pre-test to 77 in the post-test, a 22% improvement. The t-test yielded a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05), confirming the effectiveness of the Debate technique. Notable improvements included vocabulary (24%), pronunciation (24%), and fluency (19%). Thus, the Debate technique is an effective approach for enhancing speaking skills among students at SMA IT Wahdah Islamiyah Makassar.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the difficulties of grade X students in comprehending report text and the factors it. This study used a mixed method through tests and interviews as research instruments. The results showed that there were 46.67% of students had difficulty in making inference, 43.34% of students had difficulty in identifying references, 42.50% of students had difficulty in determining the main idea, 41.67% of students had difficulty in understanding vocabulary, and 39.33% of students had difficulty in detailing information. Then there are six factors that cause students to have difficulty in comprehending report text. They are, limited vocabulary knowledge, lack of fluency, inadequate use of effective reading strategies, problems with information processing, and low reading interest and motivation. This study suggests that teachers focus their attention on developing and implementing effective learning solutions to improve students' understanding of report texts.
