Abstract

Gender inequality became one of the important issues in the US as it intersects with other societal aspects, one of which is religion. In the last century, the US has seen a fast-growing number of believers in Islam, despite its unequal practices based on gender. American Muslim women are not only treated differently due to religious beliefs but also to racial backgrounds. The emergence of Amina Wadud, a female Imam with an African-American background, brings new thoughts on the position of women in Islam. Employing the Post-Nationalist approach combined with Rosemarie Tong’s liberal feminism theory, this article analyzes Wadud’s Qur’an and Women: Re-reading the Sacred Text from a Woman’s Perspective to reveal her thinking in becoming a female Imam in the US, as well as her fights against injustices towards Muslim women. It finds that her background as an African-American woman, a second class in American society, pushes her to put women’s rights in Islam forward, which are not consistent in the Qur’an. She re-interprets it with the hermeneutic method, putting women and men in the same position. While her pro-faith determination for equality drives her to overcome the rejection from the American Muslim community when she became an imam in a mixed congregation of Friday prayers.

Abstract

This study examines how a nontheistic organization called The Satanic Temple (TST) fights for religious freedom for its members, particularly in abortion rights in the US. Ronald Inglehart’s secularization framework is employed to conduct a more in-depth analysis of this group’s efforts to voice religious freedom for its members, particularly on the abortion issue. Therefore, this study also provides an in-depth examination of TST’s strategies regarding the abortion issue. The finding shows that TST has far-reaching implications not only for their efforts against the new abortion law but also for the group’s presence amidst the religious majority environment of the US. Furthermore, another finding also reveals that TST’s efforts in legal proceedings have yet to be treated fairly. TST has a strong legal argument because TST members interpret their fundamental tenets and have an abortion ritual. However, solid legal opinions are not always sufficient. In response to legal challenges, judges have shown reluctance to evaluate Satanist claims on their merits, preferring to invent procedural criticisms. The ruling did not hinder TST as much as it prevented the problem.

Abstract

Mariah Carey is an American singer and songwriter; whose mother is white, but her father is black. In 2020, she released The Meaning of Mariah Carey retracks Carey’s life as a biracial woman. This article explains how she is discriminated and reacts to the discrimination. The theories employed are Post-National American Studies; Blank, Dabady, and Citro’s types of discrimination; and Aguirre and Turner’s reaction to discrimination. When she was a kid, teenager, and young adult, the discrimination she endures is more intentional and explicit. The discrimination becomes subtler and more indirect, as she has cemented her status as a musical icon. The fact that she is still discriminated even after she has reached the peak of her superstardom suggests that biracial discrimination can happen to any mixed-race person, regardless of their socioeconomic class. Discrimination comes from both sides of the race. The article signifies how the discrimination faced by mixed-raced people are both similar, but also different from the experiences of other minorities.

Abstract

The study investigated the construction of Island Identity through translation in American New Religious Movements’ texts (NRMs). The research used the descriptive qualitative method that is based on the American studies interdisciplinary method and Kristeva’s theory of intertextuality and notions of identity, abjection, and revolt. Moreover, Kovecses’ theory of Conceptual Metaphor (CM) in American Studies and Schmidt’s CM translation typology were used. Primary data were collected from the Kirundi New World Translation (NWT), American English NWT, and New American Standard Bible (NASB). Secondary data were obtained from books and articles about American NRMs, island, and CM translation. It was found out that in the conceptualization of alterity about island identity the source text (ST) is in abjection to the mainstream NASB. Moreover, the findings proved that, despite the subversion tints of the ascetic virtues from the center of the church, the target text (TT) is a nihilation of all island identity forms. Furthermore, it was discovered that the Burundi JW Bible imitates the ST to revolt against colonial and nationalist conceptualization and ipso facto to construct an island identity that supports the church’s propensity for the postnational and global discourse of American society and culture.

Abstract

The dark triad personality is commonly understood in the field of psychological studies. However, the analysis of the dark triad is still relatively new in the realm of literary studies. This article presents the dark triad in the lyrics of Metallica’s songs “Master of Puppets” and “Sad but True”. The selection of these two songs is based on the popularity of the song and the choice of words that cause multiple interpretations among Metallica fans. The findings of this research show that there are three traits of the dark triad found in both song lyrics. Machiavellianism represents manipulation; narcissism represents self-admiration; psychopathy represents anti-social and cruelty. This article can hopefully provide in-depth understanding to listeners as the music from previous decades keeps making comebacks.

Abstract

The presence of literary works translated from foreign languages in Indonesia enriches the literary readership in region (Adi, 2016). In addition to gaining a wider readership, the understanding of the literary text will improve. Readers who may not fully understand the version in the original language have the opportunity to digest the story thoroughly. The comprehensive understanding becomes more important when dealing with foreign literature talking about Indonesia, such as Kevin Kwan's Crazy Rich Asians trilogy. The trilogy was translated into Bahasa as Kaya Tujuh Turunan (2016), Kekasih Kaya Raya (2017), and Masalah Orang Kaya (2018). This article examines how Indonesia is represented in the trilogy what factors influence the construction. The three novels were analyzed using the representation theory proposed by Stuart Hall with the descriptive-qualitative method. There are two representations of Indonesia, as a nation and as a state. Indonesian is represented of as a nation Chinese-Indonesians with their newly acquired wealth who are obsessed with having white skin and foreign husbands, on the one hand, non-Chinese Indonesians who work as manual due to lack of education on the other hand. Meanwhile, Indonesia as a state is represented as a developing rural country with rich and beautiful natural resources, yet are exploited by other countries and stolen by few government officials, resulting in weak economic and military situation.

Abstract

Michele Yeoh, being the first Asian actress to win an Oscar, might be taken as the model minority, despite Asian immigrants receiving inhumane treatment suspending them from citizenship. Marriage was encouraged to be a US citizen, giving birth to Eurasian children, who can be confused by their parents’ racial differences. They neither have a connection to their parents nor acceptance from either of their parents’ races. This in-between dynamic is explored in Kwan’s Sex and Vanity through Lucie Churchill, whose mother is Asian and father was white. Her life is filled with biracial discrimination. This article was researched by applying four theories: Post-nationalist American Studies; Critical Race Theory; Blank, Dabady and Citro’s discrimination types; and Aguirre and Turner’s reaction types. The findings show that most discrimination types are subtle, unconscious, automatic discrimination, and most reaction types are spontaneous ones. The discrimination and reactions are less vulgar because the upper class apprehends racism in the forms of intentional, explicit discrimination, e.g., physical attack and extermination, are unforgivable. The conclusion drawn is that nonextreme forms still damage mixed-race individuals. This article then argues that identity construction crisscrosses how one identifies himself or herself and how others identify him or her.
