Abstract

Problem: Helminthiasis is generally caused by the group of Soil Transmitted Helminth (STH) worms, namely Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm. Worms have an impact on health problems such as diarrhea, malnutrition and anemia. Risk factors for helminthic infection including poor personal hygiene care, nail biting habits, the habit of not wearing footwear, contact with soil media, will increase the transmission of eggs that inhabit the intestines. The Aim Of The Research: To determine the prevalence of helminthiasis and risk factors for STH intestinal worms in children living in an orphanage in Jayapura. Research Method: Fecal samples were collected from orphanage children (n= 63) using saturated salt solution to detect the presence of STH worm eggs between months August-October 2020. The Results: The prevalence of STH worm infection in orphanages in Jayapura was 12.69% in the highest age group, 6-11 years old with Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm infections. The dominant risk factors represented among the most infected children include sharing of towels, the habit of biting fingernails and the habit of not wearing footwear while playing were very significant factors for the incidence of STH worm infection (p<0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of STH worm infection in orphanage children in Jayapura was 12.69% in the highest age group 6-11 years with the most dominant risk factors are the habit of not wearint footwear while playing, the habit of biting fingernails and sharing towel together.

Abstract

Malaria remains a significant public health issue in Indonesia, characterized by high rates of illness and death. Proper laboratory diagnosis is one of the keys to malaria prevention efforts. Malaria microscopists' proficiency, knowledge, attitudes, and skills require regular assessment to maintain diagnostic quality. This study examines the correlation between malaria microscopists' knowledge, attitudes, and competencies and the accuracy of laboratory diagnostic outcomes at the Jayapura City Health Center. This study used quantitative methods with descriptive and verification approaches. Data were collected through questionnaires and laboratory diagnosis results. The study sample was 13 malaria microscopists at the Jayapura City Health Center. The data were analyzed with SPSS software. The results showed that most respondents had a good level of knowledge (76.9%). Almost half of the respondents had a good attitude (46.2%). Most respondents had a sufficient level of skill (61.5%). Interestingly, although most respondents (76.9%) could diagnose malaria very accurately, this study did not find an effect of malaria microscopists' knowledge, attitude, and skills on the accuracy of diagnosis. The knowledge level of malaria microscopists at the Jayapura City Health Center is good, but their attitudes and skills still need to be improved. It is recommended that microscope Officers routinely attend training to improve their knowledge, attitudes and skills.

Abstract

Blood type is essential information in health, particularly in blood transfusion procedures and medical emergency management. However, public awareness regarding the importance of knowing one's blood type remains low. This community service activity aimed to provide education and conduct blood typing using the ABO system for participants of the healthy heart exercise held at the Papua Provincial Health Office on November 9, 2024. The activity consisted of two main stages: health education on blood types and direct blood typing using the slide method. A total of 12 participants underwent the examination, with the following distribution of blood types: type A (50%), type O (25%), and type B (16.7%). These results reflect the tendency of blood type distribution, which is also influenced by genetic, ethnic, and geographical factors. It is concluded that blood type A is the most dominant among the participants of the healthy heart exercise (50%), followed by blood type O (25%) and blood type B (16.7%).

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that occurs due to various causes, characterized by blood glucose concentrations exceeding normal, and impaired carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism caused by abnormalities in insulin hormone secretion or insulin action abnormalities. Efforts to reduce or detect the distribution of cases of diabetes mellitus require early screening. The screening is done by checking the respondent's blood sugar, cholesterol, and uric acid. Based on the results of the health examination, which included blood sugar, it showed that from 36 respondents, 6 (16.66%) women had high blood sugar; this should be suspected due to age, consumption patterns, and lack of physical activity. Cholesterol examination results showed that 5 (13.88%) men and 4 (11.11%) women had abnormal blood cholesterol levels; this should be suspected to be influenced by the consumption pattern of foods containing high cholesterol. The results of the uric acid examination showed that 3 (8.33%) men and 4 (11.11%) women had abnormal uric acid levels; this is thought to be due to the habit of people who like to consume see food foods that have high purine content. This community service is essential to increase public awareness to check themselves periodically for their health.
