Abstract

Caring for premature infants remains a major challenge for mothers, particularly in developing countries such as Indonesia. Infants born before 37 weeks of gestation require specialized care not only during hospitalization but also after discharge. Unfortunately, many mothers still lack adequate knowledge and skills to independently manage the care of premature infants, especially in key aspects such as safe bathing, maintaining body temperature to prevent hypothermia, providing optimal nutrition, and preventing infection. The limited availability of practical training and health education further constrains the transition from hospital-based to home-based care. This community service program was designed to strengthen maternal competence in caring for premature infants through structured training that combined theoretical instruction with hands-on practice. The activity was conducted at Soediran Mangun Sumarso Regional Hospital, Wonogiri, in May 2025, and involved six mothers with premature infants. The methods included health education, demonstrations, simulation exercises, and pre- and post-training evaluations. The results indicated a significant improvement in maternal competence across the four targeted skills. These findings highlight the effectiveness of practice-based educational interventions in preparing mothers for independent premature infant care. Furthermore, this initiative provides a foundation for developing scalable educational models that can reduce complications and improve the quality of life of premature infants, while empowering mothers as primary caregivers after NICU discharge.

Abstract

Introduction: Poor menstrual hygiene practices among adolescent girls, including incorrect sanitary pad usage and improper disposal, pose significant health concerns. Limited economic resources and inadequate sanitation facilities further lead some adolescents to use less hygienic alternative pads. The wide variety of sanitary pads available on the market also means adolescents may not prioritize pad quality. Objective: This study aims to describe adolescent girls' practices regarding sanitary pad usage, specifically concerning pad type selection, frequency of changing, handwashing practices, and pad disposal. Methods: This descriptive survey employed a quantitative approach, involving 101 adolescent girls who met the study criteria. Samples were purposively selected from several junior high schools in Surakarta. Results: Among the 101 adolescent girl respondents, 41% were 13 years old and in the 8th grade of junior high school. Regarding sanitary pad usage practices in Surakarta, 85.6% lived with their parents, and 78.2% chose disposable pads. Additionally, 52.5% changed their pads twice daily, 29.7% consistently washed their hands before and after using pads, 54.5% wrapped used pads before disposing them in the trash, and 45.5% rinsed pads with water to clean off blood before disposal. Conclusion: The majority of adolescents in this study primarily use disposable pads and change them twice daily (during morning and evening baths). However, not all adolescents wash their hands before and after using sanitary pads. Importantly, the practice of disposing of used pads is generally good, with most cleaning the pads, wrapping them in plastic, and then discarding them in the trash.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the change in the catering system in the female dormitory of IAI STIBA Makassar from mandatory to optional from the perspective of the Islamic jurisprudence principle of daf‘u al-ḍarar muqaddam ‘alā jalbi al-maṣāliḥ. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study type. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and questionnaires distributed to female dormitory students. Data analysis was carried out descriptively and analytically with reference to the principles of Islamic jurisprudence. The results show that the change in the catering system provides several benefits, including easing the financial burden on students, providing flexibility in determining consumption patterns, and increasing the efficiency of kitchen management. However, this policy also causes several disadvantages, such as less regular eating patterns, the potential for decreased nutritional intake quality, and reduced social interaction among students. Based on an analysis of Islamic jurisprudence, the change in the catering system is deemed to be in line with the principle of daf‘u al-ḍarar muqaddam ‘alā jalbi al-maṣāliḥ, as it is able to eliminate greater harm by taking on lesser harm (al-ḍarar al-akhaff). Therefore, this policy can be maintained provided there is supervision and guidance to minimize any negative impacts that arise.
