Abstract

This study investigates the lexical kinship between the Dayak Ngaju and Banjar Kuala languages in Kalimantan through a lexicostatistical approach, driven by the urgent need to map and preserve under-researched Austronesian languages. The primary aim is to determine the degree of linguistic relatedness based on core vocabulary and to classify their historical relationship. Employing a quantitative descriptive design, the study analyzed 200 basic vocabulary items drawn from Lexirumah and the Austronesian Basic Vocabulary Database using purposive sampling. Data were processed using Microsoft Excel and analyzed through Swadesh’s lexicostatistical formula to calculate the percentage of cognates and determine the genealogical classification. The results reveal a lexical similarity of 31%, categorizing the relationship as a “stock” level of kinship according to Keraf’s classification. These findings support the hypothesis that the two languages share a historical connection, confirming systematic phonological correspondences such as apocope, apheresis, and metathesis. The study contributes to comparative historical linguistics and provides practical implications for language preservation, curriculum development, and further field-based linguistic research in Kalimantan and beyond.

Abstract

This study explored the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in English teaching at SMP Sahabat Alam Palangka Raya, focusing on how concept character was integrated, the challenges faced by teachers, and the strategies used to overcome them. The curriculum emphasized student-centered learning, differentiated instruction, and contextual integration. Teachers used methods such as project-based learning, essential material focus, and flexible classroom practices to meet students’ diverse needs. However, the implementation process presented several challenges. These included varied student proficiency levels, limited access to teaching materials, difficulty integrating local content, lack of professional development, time constraints, and low student motivation. To investigate this process, a qualitative case study design was employed, involving classroom observations, in-depth interviews with English teachers, and analysis of teaching documents and student work samples. Findings revealed that teachers adopted various pedagogical approaches aligned with the curriculum, including project-based learning, flexible classroom practices, and an emphasis on essential material tailored to students’ diverse needs. However, several implementation challenges emerged, such as varying student proficiency levels, limited access to appropriate teaching materials, difficulty in integrating local cultural content, insufficient professional development opportunities, time constraints, and low student motivation.

Abstract

To meet the increasing demand for skilled human resources in the hospitality industry, English-speaking skills are essential for effective workplace communication. At SMK Negeri 3 Palangka Raya, a lack of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) materials tailored to the learning needs of eleventh-grade Hospitality Program students has led to difficulties in speaking proficiency. The study aimed to develop English-speaking materials specifically designed for the hospitality field. Using a Research and Development (R&D) approach guided by the ADDIE model and TPACK framework, data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and document analysis. In addition, the materials were informed by relevant learning theories to address students’ needs. The resulting handbook features thematic hospitality dialogues, peer discussion sections, lesson recaps, audio listening practice, vocabulary and pronunciation exercises, multiple-choice comprehension questions, and roleplay-based speaking activities. Expert validations rated the handbook as “Very Feasible,” while student feedback indicated positive engagement, increased speaking confidence, and improved communicative competence. The findings suggest that the handbook bridges the gap between a general English textbook and the practical workplace needs, offering a more interactive and profession-oriented learning experience. Broader classroom application, long-term trials, and multimodal enhancements are recommended for further development.
