Abstract

This research aims to identify the issues related to the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in Biology subjects at Al-Hidayah Medan High School and the efforts made by educators to address these issues. The research was conducted on July 12, 2023 using a qualitative approach through interviews and documentation as data collection techniques. Data analysis was carried out by asking questions and recording important information. The results of the research show that there are obstacles both from internal and external factors. Internally, educators experienced some difficulty in planning learning activities and managing time to deliver the material to be taught. While externally, educators faced challenges in delivering the material due to differences in student characteristics and the lack of available facilities.

Abstract

The low metacognitive ability of students is caused by teachers never empowering metacognitive abilities and there are still many teachers who use conventional learning approaches. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the SQ3R learning model on students' metacognitive abilities on ecosystem materials and to determine the differences in students' metacognitive abilities who were taught with the SQ3R learning model and conventional learning. The sample used is two classes with a total of 76 students. The research instrument consisted of a metacognitive ability test in the form of an integrated essay with learning outcomes and a metacognitive ability questionnaire which was measured using the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory Junior (MAI-Jr). The data analysis technique in this study was analyzed using ANCOVA. It was found that the influence of the SQ3R learning model on students' metacognitive abilities and the experimental class students' metacognitive abilities was better than the control class. Furthermore, there is a significant effect of the SQ3R model on students' metacognitive abilities on each indicator of metacognitive ability. So that the findings obtained can be applied by teachers in carrying out learning, especially in Biology subjects. Keywords: ecosystem, metacognitive ability, SQ3R learning model. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v23i3.pp1158-1172

Abstract

Students' lack of information literacy skills are influenced by some factors, including educators' use of a learning strategy and their inability to link it to their students. The purpose of this study is to ascertain whether or not the Think Talk Write strategy enhances students' literacy abilities regarding immune system content. A non-equivalent pretest-posttest design and a quasi-experimental design were used in this research. Fifty-two of 11th grade students dari MAS Raudhatul Akmal Batang Kuis served as the sample who was chosen by cluster random sampling technique. An information literacy questionnaire was used as research instrument which was developed by following the information literacy principles. The ANCOVA test was used to analyze the data. The implementation of Think Talk Write strategy had a significant impact on students' information literacy skills. Keywords: Think Talk Write strategy, information literacy, biology learning.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v24i1.pp01-12

Abstract

Creative thinking skills are an important factor in learning whose implementation is still being questioned in various schools in Indonesia. This quantitative study aims to determine the effect of the Interactive Socio-Scientific Issue model on the creative thinking ability of students in class X SMA/MA. This study involved 60 students who were positioned as research subjects. Creative thinking skills data were collected using the essay test integrated creative thinking skills rubric. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of mean and analytic statistics in the form of the ANCOVA test. The results of this study inform that the profile of creative thinking skills of class X high school students has increased which can be seen from the results of pre-test and post-test in the experimental class and control class. Furthermore, indicators in creative thinking skills that developed in this study were indicators of flexible thinking in the experimental class and the highest improvement in the original thinking aspect which was seen based on the results of the post-test that had been carried out. Following up on the findings of this study, empowering creative thinking skills using the Interactive Socio Scientific Issue model is appropriate for use in subjects, especially Biology Keywords: creative thinking, environmental change, socio-scientific issue. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v23i3.pp995-1005

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of discovery learning on cell material on students' concept comprehension of class XI. In this study, the quantitative research method used quasi-experiments and a non-equivalent pretest-posttest control group design. The instruments used in the research consisted of learning materials (lesson plan, students’ worksheet and textbooks) and data collection instruments in the form of reasoned multiple choice written tests of 20 pretest-posttest questions. The research was conducted at Madrasah Aliyah Batu Bara. The population in this study were all 3 classes of XI IPA, and the sample used was 2 classes totaling 60 students taken using cluster random sampling technique. Class XI IPA 1 as an experimental class using the discovery learning model, while class XI IPA 2 as a control class using conventional learning methods. Data analysis techniques in this study were analyzed using ANCOVA. The results showed that there was an influence of the discovery learning model on cell material on students' concept comprehension. Keywords: conceptual understanding, discovery learning model, biology lesson. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v23i4.pp1900-1915

Abstract

Background: The 2022 PISA assessment reveals that Indonesian students demonstrate considerably weak science problem-solving abilities, achieving merely 383 points compared to the OECD's 485-point benchmark, with this deficiency particularly pronounced in biology education where learners encounter difficulties comprehending and contextualizing concepts such as the excretory system in practical scenarios. Methodology: Employing a 4D developmental framework (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate) truncated at the Develop phase, this investigation created a STEM-integrated student worksheet designed to strengthen problem-solving competencies among eleventh-grade pupils, utilizing expert validation, stakeholder feedback surveys, and pre-post assessment protocols analyzed through percentage calculations, N-Gain coefficients, and paired-samples t-testing. Findings: The intervention demonstrated exceptional validity with 90% expert approval ratings across content and pedagogical dimensions, exhibited strong practicality reflected in 88.71% positive educator-student reception, and yielded statistically significant learning gains as evidenced by paired t-test results (p < 0.05) alongside a substantial N-Gain value of 0.75. Contribution: This study provides specific empirical evidence that a STEM-integrated student worksheet, developed through an adapted 4D model, effectively strengthens eleventh-grade students’ science problem-solving abilities in the excretory system Learning. The results further contribute to the field by establishing this worksheet as a valid, practical, and statistically proven instructional alternative that aligns with competency-based demands and improves analytical reasoning more effectively than conventional learning materials
