Abstract

Abstract

Low exclusive breastfeeding coverage remains closely linked to limited family support and sociocultural influences in infant feeding decisions. In Batak communities, strong kinship structures position the extended family as a key decision-making unit during pregnancy and early childcare. This community engagement program employed a participatory family-based intervention using a one-group pretest–posttest design to empower families to support exclusive breastfeeding through a culturally grounded Mambosuri approach in the Gunung Tinggi Primary Health Care area. The program involved 32 third-trimester pregnant women and their families over a three-month period. The intervention integrated cultural reflection sessions, interactive family discussions, written commitment development, and pre–post evaluation of family knowledge. Findings showed a significant increase in mean knowledge scores from 62.4 to 84.7 (p < 0.001), as well as an increase in the proportion of the good comprehension category from 37.5% to 81.2%. The most notable improvement was observed in fathers’ perceived roles in breastfeeding support. However, the short duration of assistance and the absence of a control group limit broader generalization of the findings. These results suggest that integrating local cultural values into family-centered education may strengthen collective readiness for exclusive breastfeeding in similar community contexts.

Abstract

Background The high population growth rate in Indonesia remains a serious concern, one of which is addressed through the Family Planning (FP) program. The selection of contraceptive methods among couples of reproductive age (CRA) is influenced not only by the availability of contraceptive methods but also by the quality of counseling provided by healthcare professionals. Effective counseling plays an important role in helping individuals understand various contraceptive methods, including their benefits, contraindications, and side effects, enabling them to make rational and voluntary decisions. Objective This study aims to analyze the influence of family planning counseling on the selection of contraceptive methods among CRA at UPTD Puskesmas Lumban Lobu, Bonatua Lunasi District, Toba Regency in 2025. Methods This research used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group approach. The sample consisted of 67 respondents selected using purposive sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire, and data were analyzed using the paired sample t-test. Results The study found that family planning counseling had a significant effect on contraceptive method selection. Most respondents experienced improved understanding and changes in decision-making after receiving counseling. Conclusion Family planning counseling significantly improves knowledge, decision-making, and contraceptive method selection among couples of reproductive age. Effective counseling helps respondents understand the types, benefits, and side effects of contraceptives, enabling them to choose the method most suitable for their needs. Suggestion Healthcare providers are encouraged to enhance the quality of FP counseling using a more communicative and client-centered approach. Couples of reproductive age are also encouraged to actively seek information and participate in counseling sessions before deciding on a contraceptive method. Keywords: Family Planning Counseling, Contraceptive Method Selection, Couples of Reproductive Age, Family Planning Program

Abstract

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number two aims to create a healthy and productive society free from hunger. According to SDG data, the stunting rate among children under five decreased from 24.4% in 2021 to 21.6% in 2022. However, disparities remain across provinces, and national targets have not yet been achieved. Stunting is characterized by a Z-score less than -2 SD (moderate) and less than -3 SD (severe). One of the main obstacles to achieving this goal is the prevalence of malnutrition among children under five, which is a major factor contributing to stunting (1). This study aims to explore mothers' perceptions using the Health Belief Model (HBM) regarding exclusive breastfeeding in preventing. The research method is analytical, using a cross-sectional design with a Chi-Square test to analyze the influence between variables. The population consists of all mothers with toddlers, with a total of 149 visits recorded in the past year. A sample of 60 mothers was selected. Primary data were collected using questionnaires, and secondary data were obtained through interviews. The results showed that most respondents were aged 31–40 years (66.7%), had a high school education (66.7%), and were housewives (91.7%). There was a statistically significant relationship between perceived susceptibility (p=0.009) and perceived severity (p=0.024) with the practice of exclusive breastfeeding in preventing stunting. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between mothers' perceptions of susceptibility and severity. Educational interventions should focus on enhancing mothers’ positive perceptions of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding
