Abstract

The problem of hypertension in the elderly continues to increase due to many factors, one of which is being overweight. Overweight can be seen in the Body Mass Index (BMI) value. If the BMI is excessive, it will trigger an imbalance in the body or the risk of falling. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between BMI and the risk of falling in elderly people with hypertension at the Husnul Khatimah Elderly Home in Wajak District, Malang Regency. The study design used a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 64 hypertensive elderly individuals, with a sample size of 55 hypertensive elderly individuals selected using simple random sampling. The independent variable was BMI, and the dependent variable was the risk of falling. Data analysis used the Spearman rank test. The results of this study showed that almost half (49.1%) of respondents were overweight according to their BMI; and had a high average risk of falling (63.6%). The Spearman's rank test showed a relationship between BMI and the risk of falling in hypertensive elderly people at the Husnul Khatimah Elderly Home in Wajak District, Malang Regency (p value 0.011; r of 0.339. It is recommended that elderly people lose weight and increase physical activity. Nursing homes should conduct initial BMI screening for elderly residents, and researchers should conduct further studies through health education on BMI management and the risk of falls in elderly people with hypertension.

Abstract

Increased blood glucose levels in older adults are associated with the aging process, which is characterized by decreased insulin sensitivity and reduced skeletal muscle mass and function, leading to suboptimal glucose utilization. Elderly exercise is a structured physical activity that can serve as a non-pharmacological intervention to support metabolic regulation in older populations. This study aimed to describe the profile of blood glucose levels among older adults after participating in an elderly exercise program based on a community elderly school. This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-shot case study approach involving 15 respondents aged 60–76 years at the SMART “Teratai” Elderly School in Bandungrejosarisari, Sukun, Malang. The instruments used included an observation sheet and a random blood glucose measurement conducted once after the exercise session. Data were analyzed descriptively, including mean, median, standard deviation, minimum, and maximum values. The results showed that the median blood glucose level after the exercise was 107 mg/dL, with a range from 52 mg/dL to 326 mg/dL. Most respondents were female (93.3%) and aged between 60–75 years (86.7%). These findings indicate that the majority of older adults had relatively controlled blood glucose levels after participating in the exercise program. In conclusion, elderly exercise programs conducted through elderly schools have the potential to serve as a promotive strategy in maintaining metabolic health among older adults.

Abstract

The elderly experience various aging processes which result in functional decline including cognitive decline. Mild decline in cognitive function is characterized by the occurrence of forgetfulness and if it is severe it will cause senility to the occurrence of Alzheimer's disease, a progressive disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions. Decreased cognitive function can also be caused by a lack of activity in the elderly that involves the brain. So far, processing of plastic waste has been carried out but it is still limited to collecting and reselling it, there has been no attempt to use plastic waste into toys that are beneficial to health and cognitive function. The domino game using plastic bottle caps was created by the team as an activity to support cognitive and social functions for the elderly. Game activities were carried out 12 times for 15 elderly people who were in RT 06 RW 01 Tanjungrejo Village, Sukun District, Malang City. Elderly cognitive function was measured at the beginning and at the end of the activity using the MMSE. The results found are known that although some elderly people experience problems in completing game targets, elderly people who complete game cycles have improved cognitive function. The development and improvement of the appearance of the game set becomes a recommendation for further activities.

Abstract

Health promotion regarding the importance of physical activity for students' physical fitness at Universitas Tribhuwana Tunggadewi Malang plays a crucial role in fostering healthy lifestyle habits among students. Regular physical activity provides numerous benefits, including improving physical fitness, strengthening muscles and bones, and enhancing overall body endurance. In addition, exercise is also important for maintaining students’ mental health by helping to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, which are commonly experienced during the academic period. Health promotion programs focused on physical activity can encourage students to develop sustainable healthy lifestyle habits. Through activities such as group exercise, fitness sessions, or campus-based sports classes, students are motivated to be more physically active. These activities not only improve physical fitness but also strengthen the sense of community among students. Support from the university enables active lifestyle habits to become an integral part of students’ daily lives, thereby contributing positively to both their physical and mental well-being. The results of this community service activity showed that all participating students attended the educational sessions from start to finish, demonstrating their enthusiasm and awareness of the importance of physical activity for maintaining health.

Abstract

The incidence of breast cancer continues to rise and constitutes a significant global health issue, including in Indonesia. Early detection of breast cancer, although seemingly simple, is often neglected by women. This study aims to assess knowledge regarding breast cancer prevention and its correlation with the “CERDIK” behavior among adults. The research design is non-experimental with a cross-sectional approach. The population comprises all adults in the Tlogomas area, with a sample of 81 individuals selected through accidental sampling. The independent variable is knowledge of breast cancer prevention, while the dependent variable is the "CERDIK" behavior. The instrument used was a questionnaire, which had undergone validity and reliability testing by the researchers. Data analysis was performed using the Fisher exact test. The results indicate that nearly all respondents (86.2%) possess insufficient knowledge of breast cancer prevention; the majority (55.6%) exhibit moderate "CERDIK" behavior, and there is no significant correlation between knowledge of breast cancer prevention and the "CERDIK" behavior among adults in Tlogomas (p-value 0.511). It is recommended that future research conduct health promotion activities regarding breast cancer prevention and examine attitudes and determinant factors related to the "CERDIK" behavior.
