Abstract

This study aims to analyze the grammatical proficiency of vocational tourism school students in descriptive writing and identify the most common types of grammatical errors. Adopting a mixed-methods approach with an exploratory sequential design, the research involved 20 final-year tourism students from a vocational school in Bali. Data were collected through a descriptive writing task evaluated using a grammar assessment rubric, and semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather qualitative insights. Quantitative analysis revealed an average grammar proficiency score of 70.2 out of 100, with dominant errors found in the use of articles (26.7%), adjectives and adverbs (21.7%), and tenses (18.3%). Qualitative findings from interviews indicated challenges stemmed from confusion in applying articles, difficulties in choosing and placing descriptive vocabulary, the influence of Indonesian language structures, lack of specific descriptive vocabulary for tourism, and limited practice in creative writing. The study highlights the need for targeted interventions in grammar instruction, particularly for aspects crucial to descriptive writing, to better prepare students for the demands of the global tourism industry.

Abstract

The study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach, focusing on the use of swear words by Singaporeans visiting the Canggu district. The objectives of this research were to identify the swear words, analyze their forms, determine their functions, and examine their references. Primary data were collected through interviews, with the researcher serving as the main instrument. Additional instruments included an interview sheet and a questionnaire. The data collection process involved gathering, reducing, displaying, drawing conclusions, and verifying findings. The study identified 33 swear words used by Singaporeans. In terms of form, these swear words were categorized into words (7), phrases (21), and clauses (5). Their functions included expressing emotions (10), drawing attention (5), aggression (13), social identity (7), and regressive behavior (6). Furthermore, the references of these swear words were associated with conditions (14), devils (2), objects (3), body functions (5), activities (5), and kinship (4). The results of this study provide insight into how Singaporeans incorporate swear words into daily conversations. This knowledge can be valuable for language acquisition, cultural analysis, and enhancing communication in multilingual settings.

Abstract

The potential of ChatGPT as a novel Artificial Intelligence (henceforth, AI)-powered language model for language instruction, particularly for preservice teachers (henceforth, PSTs), remains unclear since earlier studies mainly provided theoretical concepts that have not yet been empirically verified. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to unleash the potential of ChatGPT for English language teaching and professional development. This qualitative study employed a phenomenological approach. The participants in this study were eight preservice English as a foreign language (henceforth, EFL) teachers at an Indonesian public university who were completing teaching practicums. Combining online and offline meetings, this study used in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Inductive thematic analysis was employed to analyze the data, and the results show that the PSTs used ChatGPT for four main purposes (innovative teaching content creation and presentation, collaborative instructional strategies, development of effective assessments, and language proficiency improvement) to improve their teaching techniques during the teaching practicums. The results also suggest that ChatGPT could provide comprehensive and relevant information. Still, at some points, it also has some drawbacks regarding the quality and accuracy of the information. Although ChatGPT has several disadvantages, the participants had a positive view of ChatGPTs value to novice teachers professional growth. This study offers three implications for improving English language teaching and preservice teacher professional development.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the mastery of English vocabulary of fourth grade students of SD Negeri 3 Dalung through drilling techniques integrated with technology in the form of vocabulary videos. The drilling technique was chosen because it is effective in improving students' memory through repetition of material, while the technology in the form of videos provides an interactive and interesting learning experience. The research method used is Classroom Action Research (CAR) with two cycles, where each cycle consists of the stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through vocabulary tests, observations, and interviews. The results showed that the use of drilling techniques integrated with vocabulary videos significantly improved students' vocabulary acquisition. At the end of the second cycle, the number of students who reached the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM) increased significantly compared to the first cycle. In addition, students showed improvement in confidence and active participation during the learning process. The use of technology through video media also enriched students' learning experience and motivated them to better understand English vocabulary. The findings provide practical implications for teachers to adopt technology-based learning methods to support students' vocabulary acquisition effectively.

Abstract

AbstractThe research delves into code-switching among Indonesian speakers in the UK, covering the syntactic and functional reasons why they use code-switching in intra-sentential contexts by applying Poplack's theory in syntactic and Hoffmann's theory in functional. Data collection includes repeated video watching, taking notes, and categorising code-switching used in the video podcast. Those steps require repeated execution to ensure accurate and comprehensive data collection and analysis. After categorising and identifying patterns of code-switching, it is followed by interpreting the findings and making connections to Poplacks and Hoffmans’ theories which led to the conclusion-drawing. The analysis presents nine states of intra-sentential switching parts of speech and seven categories of code-switching functions. Of 134 instances of code-switching, 104 were intra-sentential, with ICs being the most common (32%). Speakers primarily used code-switching to discuss specific topics, accounting for 37.67% of all instances. The results indicate that speakers would rather negotiate higher units, such as clauses, because the language feature is part of their regular use of English in the UK. This study demonstrates how code-switching helps with communication and identity formation for bilingual speakers. In relevance for language education, code-switching, as a pedagogical tool, can enhance comprehension and participation in language education programs, particularly in more complexly multilingual classrooms. Future research should also examine code-switching in various cultural contexts and use interdisciplinary methodologies to fully fund this linguistic phenomenon.
