Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic acted as an unprecedented catalyst, forcing a global transition to online education and exposing deep-seated infrastructural and pedagogical vulnerabilities. This study investigates the lasting perceptions of this shift among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in Indonesia, focusing on the persistent challenge of the urban-rural digital divide. Employing a qualitative case study approach, this research explores the experiences of four junior high school English teachers in Pontianak Regency—two from urban and two from rural schools. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and document analysis. The findings reveal a significant dichotomy in teacher perceptions shaped by geographical location. Urban teachers, while initially optimistic, developed negative perceptions due to pedagogical frustrations and declining student engagement. In contrast, rural teachers held overwhelmingly negative perceptions from the start, citing insurmountable barriers related to internet access, device availability, and lack of digital literacy. The study concludes that the emergency remote teaching experience has solidified teacher perceptions that a one-size-fits-all approach to educational technology is untenable in a diverse landscape like Indonesia, highlighting an urgent need for context-aware policies and equitable infrastructure development in the post-pandemic era.

Abstract

Being designed in expost facto, this research intends to seek the answer of the following research quetions 1) is there a statistically significant effect of age, sex and grade difference on FL anxiety? 2) do females, older and lower grader participants score higher in foreign language anxiety? A research instrument, foreign language classroom anxiety scale, from Horwitz, Horwitz, Cope (1986) was distributed to collect the data about the level of FL anxiety which the participants have, the data then was analysed using independent t-test and Anova in SPSS 24. Performing independent t-test it was found that the t-value from age and sex group was 1,356 and 1,123 respectively, while sig. (two tailed) of the two group was .178 and . 264 which was more than 0.05. this mean that there was no siginificant defference of age and sex group in term of foreign language anxiety. In other word, females and older participants are no more anxious than males and younger participants, and vice versa. Different pattern appeared in the result of data analysis of the effect of grade on foreign language anxiety using Anova. The mean difference of grade group was found to be statistically significant with F-value 3.847 and sig. 0.025 where .025 was less than 0.05. This computation implied that grade is a significant predictor for foreign language anxiety. In broader explanation, it was proved that lower grade students in junior high school tend to be more anxious than the upper ones in senior high school and university.

Abstract

This research investigates the psychological challenges experienced by second-semester students of the English Education Study Program at UNU Kalbar during English presentation activities. A qualitative descriptive method was employed to provide a clear overview of the affective barriers influencing students’ speaking performance. Data were collected through an 18-item questionnaire supported by semi-structured interviews to obtain a comprehensive understanding of their experiences. The analysis focused on six psychological aspects: lack of confidence, shyness, fear of making errors, anxiety, low motivation, and concern about criticism. The findings reveal that many students experience considerable nervousness, hesitation, and reduced motivation when presenting in English. Fear of criticism and low motivation appear as the most dominant barriers. These psychological issues limit students’ ability to express ideas clearly and hinder their overall performance. Therefore, the study recommends that lecturers implement motivational teaching strategies, create supportive and low-stress learning environments, and provide constructive, non-judgmental feedback to help students overcome psychological obstacles and improve their English presentation skills.

Abstract

Vocabulary plays a central role in English learning because it enables students to understand texts and express ideas effectively. However, many junior EFL students still face difficulties in mastering vocabulary due to limited exposure and low motivation. This study aims to investigate the effect of flashcard media displayed on the literacy window on students’ vocabulary mastery at SMP IT Al-Wahidiyah. The research employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involving 17 seventh-grade students. A vocabulary test consisting of 30 multiple-choice items was administered before and after six treatment sessions using flashcards on the literacy window. The results showed an increase in the mean score from 46.35 in the pretest to 64.35 in the posttest, with a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05), indicating a significant improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery. These findings suggest that the combination of flashcards and literacy windows provides repeated exposure that strengthens students’ memory and enhances vocabulary retention. This approach is therefore recommended as an effective strategy for improving vocabulary mastery among junior high school students.

Abstract

This research investigates English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers’ perceptions of the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in teaching seventh-grade students at SMPN 29 Pontianak and SMPN 3 Batu Ampar. The study aims to explore how teachers perceive, understand, and evaluate the effectiveness of PjBL in fostering meaningful learning, student engagement, and the development of 21st-century skills. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through interviews and documentation to gain in-depth insights into teachers’ experiences and perspectives. The findings reveal that teachers generally perceive PjBL positively as it provides opportunities for students to collaborate, communicate, and apply their language skills in authentic contexts. However, challenges such as limited time allocation, unequal student participation, and the need for careful planning were also highlighted. Despite these challenges, teachers acknowledged that PjBL enhances student motivation and encourages active learning. The study concludes that while PjBL requires adaptation and adequate support to be effectively implemented, it holds significant potential in improving students’ language skills and fostering holistic learning experiences. This research contributes to the understanding of how EFL teachers view PjBL in the Indonesian context and offers implications for improving teaching practices in secondary schools.
