Abstract

This study explores the historical relationship between the Dayak Ngaju and Katingan languages through a comparative lexical and phonological analysis. A total of 225 word pairs were examined using lexicostatistical and historical phonology methods. Each pair was classified into one of three categories: cognates, likely cognates, and non-cognates. The findings show that 46.22% of the pairs are clear cognates, 22.22% are likely cognates, and 31.56% are non-cognates. In addition to lexical similarities, phonological processes such as apheresis, apocope, paragoge, and single phoneme differences were identified, further supporting their genealogical relationship. These patterns indicate that the two languages likely descend from a common proto-language within the Austronesian family. Core vocabulary items such as “water,” “dog,” and “bird” remain identical, reflecting lexical stability. The study not only affirms a strong linguistic connection between Ngaju and Katingan but also contributes to the preservation of regional languages by documenting their historical and structural ties.

Abstract

This study examined classroom interaction in English Language Teaching and Learning at MTs Terpadu Berkah Palangka Raya through a qualitative case study. It aimed to identify the interaction patterns occurring during lessons and the factors that influenced interaction in improving students’ English skills. The subjects of this study were an English teacher and a class of eighth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Flanders Interaction Analysis Category System (FIACS). The findings showed that teacher talk dominated the classroom, while student was relatively limited and silence/confusion appeared frequently. Student participation was mainly in the form of short responses, with very few initiations. Interviews revealed that psychological and linguistic barriers such as shyness, lack of confidence, and limited vocabulary combined with external influences including teacher-centered strategies, curriculum demands, and the cultural setting of madrasah, contributed to these interactional patterns. The results of the study conclude that interactions in English classes in this context remain teacher-centered, thereby limiting opportunities for students to develop their communicative skills. The study highlights the need for more student-centered approaches to enhance participations and support language development.

Abstract

It is possible to defeat the Covid-19 virus by boosting the body's defenses. Using family medicinal plants, which typically grow more naturally in yards and are widely used as food additives as well as for healing, disease prevention, improving immunity, and restoring freshness, which ultimately benefits public health, is one of the ways to boost immunity. The community still has a limited understanding of and reaction to the usage of therapeutic herbs. It is judged important to perform community service in relation to the administration of the family's medicinal plants after observing the response of a group of women in Talio Village who have family medicinal plants. The strategy employs community empowerment techniques, particularly for the target population through counseling and training.  In particular, the target group receives counseling and training while producing a healthy butterfly pea flower drink for ten women and cadres in Talio Village as part of the approach method's utilization of community empowerment techniques. The outcomes of this activity demonstrate that mothers and health professionals in Talio Village now have a more comprehensive understanding of how to prepare a healthy butterfly pea flower beverage as a consequence of counseling and training utilizing training materials. The answer score, where the mean post-test score is 86.20 and greater than the pre-test score of 72.3, serves as proof of this. Knowledge growth as a percentage grew by 14.17%. The outcomes of community service through counseling and education by offering instruction on how to make healthy butterfly pea flower beverages help boost moms' and staff members' understanding of how to strengthen the immune system of the family. PKK Desa is advised to organize a small group of traditional herbal medicine firms and host a village-wide competition for family medicinal plants.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore how Clash of Champions, an edutainment-based learning competition program, influenced students’ learning motivation and speaking confidence among English Education students at UIN Palangka Raya. The study focused on passive viewers who watched the program outside classroom settings. This research employed a qualitative case study design. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observations, and focus group discussions (FGD) involving selected undergraduate students. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify emerging themes related to learning motivation and speaking confidence. The findings revealed that Clash of Champions positively affected students’ learning motivation by fostering autonomy, competence, relatedness, and emotional engagement. Students were intrinsically motivated because they enjoyed the show and felt inspired by the contestants’ performances. Extrinsically, they were motivated by the desire to improve their English skills for future goals. Regarding speaking confidence, students reported feeling more confident and less anxious about speaking in English after observing the fluent performance of participants in the program. The study indicates that Clash of Champions provided students with vicarious learning experiences that strengthened their self-efficacy and willingness to communicate. In conclusion, Clash of Champions as an edutainment program effectively enhanced both motivation and confidence in learning English. It provided authentic and engaging exposure to language use while promoting positive emotional responses. The study suggests that integrating edutainment media into English teaching can support affective and communicative learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study investigates the lexical kinship between the Dayak Ngaju and Banjar Kuala languages in Kalimantan through a lexicostatistical approach, driven by the urgent need to map and preserve under-researched Austronesian languages. The primary aim is to determine the degree of linguistic relatedness based on core vocabulary and to classify their historical relationship. Employing a quantitative descriptive design, the study analyzed 200 basic vocabulary items drawn from Lexirumah and the Austronesian Basic Vocabulary Database using purposive sampling. Data were processed using Microsoft Excel and analyzed through Swadesh’s lexicostatistical formula to calculate the percentage of cognates and determine the genealogical classification. The results reveal a lexical similarity of 31%, categorizing the relationship as a “stock” level of kinship according to Keraf’s classification. These findings support the hypothesis that the two languages share a historical connection, confirming systematic phonological correspondences such as apocope, apheresis, and metathesis. The study contributes to comparative historical linguistics and provides practical implications for language preservation, curriculum development, and further field-based linguistic research in Kalimantan and beyond.

Abstract

This study discusses the implementation of Islamic Education Management Philosophy in addressing forced marriages by parents and their impact on household harmony. This study uses a qualitative approach with data collection using observation, interviews, and documentation to gain an in-depth understanding of religious views, Islamic educational values, and the real experiences of respondents regarding forced marriages. The results show that forced marriage contradicts the principles of Islamic Education Management Philosophy, which emphasizes humanization, justice, deliberation, and respect for individual dignity. The practice of forced marriage has the potential to cause various negative impacts, including domestic disharmony, psychological disorders, poor communication, prolonged conflict, and violations of individual rights. The implementation of Islamic educational values, such as deliberation, compassion, trust, responsibility, and the active role of parents and premarital educational institutions, has proven effective in building individual awareness of the importance of willingness and mental and emotional readiness in choosing a life partner. This study concludes that family education and Islamic education play a strategic role in preventing forced marriage and realizing a harmonious family based on sakinah, mawaddah, and rahmah in accordance with Islamic teachings.

Abstract

This study examines phonological and lexical change in Kudangan, a minority language spoken by the Dayak Tomun community in Central Kalimantan, and explores its implications for mother-tongue-based regional language education. Employing a qualitative linguistic approach, data were collected through purposive sampling involving community elders and fluent speakers, semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and lexical elicitation. Phonological analysis was conducted using segmental comparison and rule-based description, while lexical change was analyzed in terms of morphological restructuring and semantic shift. The findings reveal systematic sound correspondences, including vowel modification (e.g., /air/ → /arai/) and final consonant addition (e.g., /hujan/ → /hujant/), alongside patterned lexical variation reflecting sociocultural meaning and language contact. These results demonstrate that Kudangan maintains an internally coherent phonological and lexical system despite pressure from dominant languages. The study offers novel empirical documentation of an under-described Austronesian variety and provides a linguistic foundation for developing culturally responsive teaching materials and sustaining minority language transmission. Accordingly, phonological and lexical description is positioned not only as documentation but also as a strategic resource for regional language education and long-term language maintenance.

Abstract

Despite extensive scholarship on ritual symbolism, studies of Indonesian indigenous rituals have largely treated material objects as culturally meaningful entities without explaining how their meanings are structurally produced, authorized, and stabilized within ritual systems. In particular, the application of Roland Barthes’ structural semiotics to ritual language remains underdeveloped. This study investigates how linguistic authorization functions as a mechanism of semiotic closure through which material objects acquire ritual efficacy within a structured sign system. Employing a qualitative ethnographic design, data were collected through participant observation, interviews with ritual specialists (Basir and Telun), and documentation of ritual utterances and material practices in the Tiwah mortuary ceremony among Kaharingan adherents in Central Kalimantan. The analysis applies Barthes’ Expression-Relation-Content (E-R-C) framework to trace how denotative meanings are transformed into culturally regulated connotations through ritual sequencing and authorized speech. The findings demonstrate that ritual objects do not possess inherent efficacy; rather, their meanings emerge from the structured alignment of material form, ritual position, and linguistically sanctioned authority. Gold (bulau) is reconstituted from a precious metal into a cosmological mediator, while rice (behas) functions as a relational semiotic resource whose meaning is generated through ordered deployment and sequential address. By foregrounding linguistic authorization as a structural mechanism that stabilizes connotation and limits interpretive variability, this study extends Barthesian structural semiotics and offers a transferable analytical model for examining how ritual meaning is produced and governed across diverse cultural contexts of ritual language and symbolism.
