Abstract

This research explored effective teaching strategies for teaching elementary school students the simple past tense. Given that children at primary school age experienced rapid cognitive development, appropriate teaching methods were essential for building a strong language foundation. This article reviewed teaching methods in the simple past tense, including Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), Game-Based Learning (GBL), and technology integration. CLT prioritized the use of language in accurate and relevant contexts, which helped students understand the use of the simple past tense in everyday conversations. Game-based learning (GBL) increased student engagement and motivation through interactive games, such as card and role-playing games, which facilitated the understanding of tense changes in a fun way. In addition, technologies such as language learning apps and interactive videos provided opportunities for students to practice independently and receive immediate feedback. The research also highlighted the importance of student motivation in successful teaching, where a supportive environment and fun activities increased student engagement and understanding of the material. The results of this research suggested that the combination of CLT, GBL, and technology methods, as well as the cultivation of student motivation, could create a compelling and engaging learning environment.

Abstract

This study compares the Dayak Ngaju and Bakumpai languages from a historical linguistic perspective to reveal their kinship and phonetic changes that occur. Although they come from the same language family, these two languages show phonological differences due to social, cultural, and contact influences with Banjar Malay and Indonesian. This poses a threat to the sustainability of the Bakumpai language. This study uses a comparative historical linguistic approach with lexicostatistical analysis to measure the level of kinship between the Dayak Ngaju and Bakumpai languages. The data used is basic Swadesh vocabulary consisting of 200 words. In addition, phonetic changes such as apheresis, apocope, and syncope are analysed to identify phonetic change patterns in both languages. The analysis results show that the level of kinship between the Dayak Ngaju and Bakumpai languages reaches 80.5%, indicating the closeness of the two in one language family. Phonetic changes, such as initial (afteresis) and final (apocope) sound deletion, are found in both languages, reflecting phonological evolution influenced by social and cultural factors. This study concludes that despite phonetic differences, the Dayak Ngaju and Bakumpai languages still share significant similarities, indicating a strong kinship. These findings reinforce the importance of preserving the endangered Bakumpai language and contribute to local Kalimantan culture's linguistic understanding and preservation.

Abstract

This research aimed to explore the role of electronic media in enhancing English language learning among high school students in Banjarmasin, Indonesia. The research focused on students’ perceptions and their experiences with digital platforms, apps, and social media. The rapid advancement of technology has made electronic media essential tools in Education, offering students flexible, engaging, and interactive learning opportunities. Despite these benefits, challenges such as limited internet access, insufficient digital skills, and lack of direct teacher interaction were also noted. The findings revealed that students found electronic media motivating and enjoyable, particularly in developing listening and speaking skills. They appreciated the easy access to learning materials and the flexibility to learn anytime and anywhere. However, the lack of in-depth teacher explanations and the dependency on a stable internet connection remained significant barriers. The research suggested that while electronic media could significantly enhance language learning, their full potential could only be realized by addressing technological challenges and promoting digital literacy.

Abstract

This research explored the English learning experiences of Generation Z students in Indonesia using a narrative inquiry approach. Amidst the rapid advancement of digital technology, it was important to understand how Generation Z, born in the digital era, interacted with English language learning. This research aimed to explore students' perceptions, challenges, and lived experiences in learning English to contribute to developing more relevant teaching practices. A qualitative research design was applied by collecting personal narratives from five purposively selected students. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and reflective writing tasks, then thematically analyzed to identify patterns and individual perspectives. The findings of this research identified four main themes: (1) a preference for informal digital platforms, such as social media and learning apps; (2) emotional changes related to self-confidence and peer comparison; (3) the role of teacher support and classroom environment in enhancing motivation; and (4) a growing view of English as a practical skill that was more important than mere academic achievement. The findings illustrated the dynamic relationship between personal motivation, socio-cultural influences, and technological engagement in shaping students' language learning journeys. The research concluded that recognizing and integrating students' narratives in teaching practices could increase learner engagement, encourage independence, and support more adaptive and empathic teaching strategies. These findings' implications were highly relevant for educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers to align English language teaching with the values and realities of Generation Z students.
