Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the controversy surrounding content produced by feminine male Instagram celebrities in Aceh, being perceived to conflict with the region's cultural and religious values. These influencers create content by dressing in women's clothing, using feminine accessories, and adopting female speech patterns. Despite this, their endorsements are widely used by businesses in Aceh, including by a local university. This shows that the feminine brand they have cultivated has successfully attracted an audience, even though the content itself contradicts established cultural and religious values. The content is fully commodified to gain financial profit. The method used in this research was virtual ethnography with four levels of data analysis: media space, media documents, media objects, and experiences. Additional data were obtained through interviews with two cultural figures and two religious leaders to strengthen the findings. The results of the study indicated that the content uploaded by these feminine male celebrities undermines Acehnese cultural values and violates Islamic religious values. The content shows a shift in original gender roles from male to female. This phenomenon of feminine male content is considered an identity crisis among Instagram celebrities, who can influence others through the content they produce. From a religious perspective, this content can damage the foundation of life, as seen in the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad that prohibits men from dressing and appearing as women. Furthermore, the financial profits obtained are considered haram (unlawful) because the process of earning the money is not permitted by Islam.

Abstract

Animation is a highly popular entertainment medium among university students, yet not all animated content conveys positive values. Animations contain harsh language and messages that contradict Islamic communication ethics, creating a tension between the identity of Islamic Communication and Broadcasting (KPI) students as future da'i/da'iah and their daily communication practices influenced by inappropriate media content. This study examines how both positive and negative animations shape the communication style of KPI students at UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh. Guided by cultivation theory, symbolic interactionism, and uses and gratifications, the research explores how messages are internalized, meanings are negotiated, and motivations drive media consumption. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical method, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation via purposive sampling. Findings show that students’ preferences for animation are driven by motivation, graphic quality, contextual narratives, engaging plots, entertainment value, and learning elements. Animation generates dual influences on communication style: positive impacts include creativity, proper language use, moral internalization, improved communication quality, and critical thinking; while negative effects involve harsh intonation, inappropriate vocabulary, and non-contextual mimicry. This study highlights the need for reflective media consumption and contributes novelty through a comprehensive comparison of positive and negative animations integrated with Islamic communication principles (qaulan ma’rufa).

Abstract

This study analyzes the moral messages presented in the web series Bidaah using Teun A. Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis model. The research problem arises from the growing presence of distorted religious representations in digital media, which increasingly shape public perceptions of religious authority. The study aims to reveal how meaning is constructed through textual structures, the social cognition of the film’s creators, and the broader social context surrounding the production of Bidaah. The research method involves direct observation of the series, systematic documentation of its narrative and visual elements, and a review of relevant literature. The findings show that Bidaah conveys strong moral messages about the misuse of religion, the exercise of power, and the importance of critically pursuing truth. At the textual level, the film highlights the tension between dogma and common sense through the depiction of character conflicts. At the level of social cognition, it reflects the creators’ intention to encourage viewers to think critically about the legitimacy of religious authority. At the contextual level, the series mirrors ongoing issues of religious manipulation in contemporary society. The study concludes that Bidaah functions not only as entertainment but also as an educational medium that promotes a rational and humanistic understanding of religion. The contribution of this research lies in mapping the structure of moral messages in digital media content and demonstrating the usefulness of Van Dijk’s discourse analysis model for examining religious representation in popular culture.
