Abstract

Serule Village is the oldest Islamic settlement originating from the 17th century during the Aceh Sultanate and is classified as a Historical Cultural Heritage Village. Therefore, this research aimed to (1) identify the concepts of protection/defense found in the early vernacular settlement patterns of Serule, (2) analyze symbolic interpretations and Islamic values in the arrangement of Serule vernacular settlements, and (3) examine the harmonization of defense concepts with principles of Islamic cosmology in the embodiment of Serule vernacular settlements. Descriptive qualitative methods were adopted along with data collection techniques, such as observation, interviews, and literature review. The results showed that the configuration of Serule Village emphasized the importance of protecting living things and hydrological factors to avoid flooding. The linear functional spatial composition described a functional zoning system including agricultural land and graves (profane), villages (semi-profane),  Nurul Iman Mosque (central area), as well as gardens and mountains (sacred). Furthermore, the research showed that the composition of landscape elements and environmental characteristics proved a harmony between the need for physical protection (defense concept) and the Islamic values found in Serule village settlements. This discovery contributed to the development of vernacular theory regarding the concept of defense and Islamic religious values.

Abstract

Aceh Tengah Regency, as one of the regions with significant natural and cultural tourism potential in Aceh Province, has experienced various changes in its community settlement patterns. However, these changes have not occurred uniformly across all villages. For example, Toweren Village in Lut Tawar District continues to preserve its traditional houses and local wisdom amid the tide of modernization. The phenomenon of maintaining traditional values amidst contemporary developments is an interesting subject for study, particularly in the context of socio-cultural changes and settlement spatial patterns. This study aims to analyze the spatial pattern of settlements in Toweren Village, which is shaped by the interaction between local culture and the dynamics of changing times. The research method used is descriptive evaluation, employing both primary and secondary surveys for data collection. The analysis is conducted by presenting maps, written sources, and field observations, which are then described. The results show that the macro spatial concept in Toweren Village is formed through the physical arrangement of the settlement environment, reflecting the division of space based on land use. Residential areas are located in the village center, while agricultural and plantation lands lie outside the residential zone. At the micro scale, housing occupancy follows the hulu-teben spatial layout concept, which serves as the basis for regulating the position and function of spaces within the settlement. Areas with higher topography are considered more sacred than those with lower topography. The settlement pattern of Toweren Uken follows a top-down concept, with a hierarchical spatial structure from the center outward, in accordance with cultural values. Initially concentrated around Umah Pitu Ruang, the settlement pattern has now spread throughout the village. Changes are also evident in the increasingly narrow yards of houses due to population growth, illustrating the dynamic between preserving traditional spatial patterns and socio-demographic development.

Abstract

Bamboo is very abundant in the Gayo Highlands, but locals mostly use it for simple things like temporary shelters in rice fields and fences around houses. In the past, before modern materials became widely available, bamboo played a significant role in traditional Gayo buildings, both structurally and culturally. A three-day bamboo workshop was held to revive bamboo as a versatile, sustainable building material for modern architecture, while preserving its cultural significance. The workshop had two main goals: teaching how bamboo can work with modern materials like steel and cement, and showing new designs for tourism buildings using bamboo. Participants learned how to process bamboo, connect pieces, and preserve it. They also created new building ideas combining bamboo with other materials. The workshop helped the community understand bamboos environmental, cultural, and economic importance, supporting sustainable tourism and contributing to global goals for sustainable cities and responsible use of resources.

Abstract

Langsa City faces escalating challenges from hydrometeorological disasters that threaten socio-economic stability, as evidenced by the extreme flooding event on November 26, 2025. This study aims to formulate an integration model between local spatial planning policies (RDTR/RTRW) and capacity-based disaster mitigation paradigms within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework, specifically Goal 13 (Climate Action). Employing a descriptive qualitative method with a spatial approach, this research identifies infrastructure vulnerabilities and socio-economic impacts across five districts. Spatial analysis reveals that rice field land cover in Langsa dropped from 2,410 hectares in 2012 to 1,925 hectares in 2025, representing a significant loss of natural water retention. Analysis of the November 26, 2025, event reveals spatial anomalies where floodwaters encroached into zones previously categorized as "low risk," indicating a systemic dysfunction of infiltration systems due to uncontrolled land conversion. Despite the Qanun RTRW mandate for 30% Green Open Space (RTH), field implementation is hindered by limited indigenous engagement in autonomous mitigation. This article recommends a drainage network engineering strategy integrated with Gampong Social Capital specifically institutional trust in Geuchik and Tuha Peut as a sustainable urban resilience solution. These findings contribute to the global urban resilience literature by emphasizing the empowerment of the smallest community units as a mitigation basis in developing nations.

Abstract

The Indrapurwa Mosque, located in Lamguron Village, Aceh Besar, Indonesia, is a significant historical site dating back to the Aceh Sultanate period. However, following the 2004 earthquake and tsunami, the mosque has experienced physical degradation and diminished public recognition. As part of the historical spatial network of Aceh Lhee Sagoe, the mosque requires a systematic and context-sensitive preservation approach to safeguard its historical and cultural values. This study aims to formulate a revitalization concept for the Indrapurwa Mosque complex by using its original architectural character as the primary design foundation. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method, integrating field observations, interviews, and historical literature review. The study is conducted in two main stages. The first stage involves identifying and analyzing the architectural character of the original Indrapurwa Mosque, including its tiered (tumpang) roof typology, structural system, materiality, and spatial organization. The second stage translates these characteristics into design parameters for the revitalization of the mosque complex, adapted to contemporary functional and spatial requirements. The findings demonstrate that integrating traditional Nusantara architectural character into the design framework can effectively restore the identity of the Indrapurwa Mosque while maintaining historical continuity. The proposed revitalization concept balances preservation and development by reinterpreting architectural values into a contemporary context. This research contributes both theoretically and practically, offering a character-based revitalization approach and providing a reference for the design and preservation of historic religious architecture in Aceh that is rooted in local cultural heritage.

Abstract

Aceh Tengah is home to various tribes, notably the Gayo tribe, known for their unique houses and philosophies with rich historical significance. One such house, Umah Edet Reje Baluntara in the Toweren Uken village, has stood for over a century, bearing historical traces, particularly in its changing morphology over time. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method that consists of two stages, namely collecting secondary data from various online literacies to become the initial basis for describing Umah Edet Reje Baluntara and collecting primary data as field data which is carried out directly at the location of Umah Edet Reje Baluntara by interviewing trusted sources. and observe the object. This data was processed to reconstruct Umah Edet Reje Baluntara by digitizing it using SketchUp Pro 2022 software. Reconstruction via software found several changes in materials and space. These changes are caused by natural factors, family, and time that has passed for a long time. Since this house was built in 1860, the changes in shape that have occurred are in the serule roof elements which have changed to tin roofs, the natural stone ompak foundation has changed to cast concrete, the Titi construction has been lost, elements of the stairs and stair doors are also missing, space the kitchen at the back has been dismantled, the pepir ornaments have been damaged, and many of the lisplang ornaments have been broken.
