Abstract

 The purpose of this study is to examine the English translations of brochures published by the Tourist Board of Gorontalo Province Government in Indonesia. This quantitative study looked at tourism brochures, both in Indonesian and English, as the source of data. The data were analyzed by considering the frequency and percentage to assess the problems of the English translation used as promotional material. The results reveal that the most frequent problems were syntactic problems (61.54%), followed by semantic problems (26.37%) and miscellaneous problems (12.09%) respectively. This study is expected to contribute to the form of feedback and implications regarding the level of problems and effectiveness of the promotional material in English for future improvement. The results of this study can also be used to develop a model for the use of effective and persuasive English to improve the quality of tourism promotion material by the aforementioned party so that there will be an increased number of interest in foreign tourists visiting Gorontalo in the future. The implication in language learning especially in translator training is also considered.

Abstract

English is a challenging topic for Indonesian students since the English language is so different from the Indonesian language and one of the topics in English is grammar. However, sometimes language learners make grammatical errors and teachers are not an exception. This research focuses on the categories of grammatical errors found in the summative assessment composed by the MGMP teachers in Boalemo and their perceptions regarding the said error. This study employed descriptive qualitative method and utilized document and interview to collect the data. The techniques of data analysis are document and thematic analysis. After conducting this research, it is found that the most committed error by the participant is the error of omission, specifically omission of parts of speech and this error is caused mainly by the lack of quality control among the MGMP teachers. This research is intended to develop the study of teaching, specifically improving grammatical comprehension.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the translation methods applied by the translator in translating figurative language in O. Henry's short stories. This descriptive analysis research took the data from nine short stories as the research documents. There were 19 pieces of data taken from those nine short stories and analyzed using content analysis. The findings revealed that literal, semantic, communicative, idiomatic, and free translation methods were used in translating simile metaphors and hyperbole. It was found that the literal translation methodwas significantly used compared to other translation methods. The frequent use of literal indicated the poor translation competence of the translators that tended to copy both the structure and meaning of the source text into the target text.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the translation techniques employed in the English-Indonesian translation of Carlo Collodi's "The Adventure of Pinocchio." By utilizing Molina and Albir's translation techniques, the study explores the specific methods used by the translator, Lulu Wijaya. The objective of this research is to gain insights into the translation techniques utilized in fairy tales and their implications for cross-cultural communication and children's literature. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through the analysis of documents. The researcher identified 312 instances of translation techniques, which were categorized into nine types. These included adaptation (62 cases), compensation (71 cases), borrowing (1 case), amplification (3 cases), discursive creation (4 cases), established equivalent (1 case), literal translation (150 cases), modulation (6 cases), and reduction (14 cases). Notably, the most prevalent technique employed by Lulu Wijaya was literal translation. The findings of this research shed light on the prevalent use of literal translation in the translation of fairy tales, specifically "The Adventure of Pinocchio." Understanding these translation techniques is valuable for the field of translation studies, providing insights into the challenges and considerations involved in translating children's literature. Furthermore, these findings have implications for cross-cultural communication and the effective conveyance of meaning to young readers. This research contributes to the understanding of translation techniques in fairy tales, emphasizing their significance and potential applications in the broader context of literature and intercultural exchange.

Abstract

A multilingual urban area is a translation space that allows the exchange of ideas across languages and cultures. Yet, little research has examined how translation plays a role in shaping linguistic landscapes that depict coexisting languages in public spaces. This paper aims to examine the linguistic landscape of public signage from the viewpoint of translation. A total of 123 bilingual signage was collected from the linguistic landscape of Gorontalo City, an emerging tourism industry with an interesting multilingual setting in Eastern Indonesia. The data were analyzed using the translation category of multilingual writing developed by Reh (2004) and Edelman (2010) to provide an understanding of the translational practice evident in the signage. The analysis also looked at the direction of the translated signage, including official and non-official translation based on the linguistic landscape orientation (top-down and bottom-up), as well as translation to demonstrate collective identity. Translation practices, categorized into word-for-word (67 items), free (8 items), partial (11 items), and non-translation (37 items), demonstrate a growing trend toward linguistic diversity. The top-down approach is evident in official translations (50 items) by government entities, while non-official translations (73 items) dominate commercial spaces. Arabic, displayed alongside Indonesian and English, symbolizes religious identity in public signage. Overall, Gorontalo’s linguistic landscape reflects a shift to bilingualism, particularly with widespread English translations. Its linguistic landscape showcases a dynamic interplay of language, translation, and cultural identity in an evolving urban environment.

Abstract

This research analyzes translation techniques used in translating Looking for Alaska novel written by John Green. A qualitative method is employed in discovering the results, where it is conducted by employing note-taking in order to collect the data. In analyzing the data, this research utilized document analysis for reviewing or evaluating the selected document, which in this case, the translated novel. After conducting this research, it is found that this novel is translated by using ten types of technique, namely adaptation, amplifiction, borrowing, calque, compensation description, estabilish equivalent, generalization, literal translation, and variation. Furthermore, the most used technique in translating the Looking for Alaska novel is literal translation with the discovered cases being 140 and since this technique is constantly used in translation, this number is only the representation of it because it is safe to assume that the translator usually resorted to this technique presumably due to it is being default way of translating a text.

Abstract

This recent research aimed to describe teachers’ perceptions in using Merdeka Curriculum in teaching English in SMA Negeri 3 Gorontalo Utara and SMA Negeri 5 Gorontalo Utara. The method of this research was qualitative design that is hoped to give detail and in-depth information about certain phenomenon. the result of research showed teachers positively perceive the Merdeka Curriculum's structure, commending its flexibility in organizing intracurricular content to cater to diverse student needs through innovative approaches. The division of teaching hours into intracurricular and Pancasila strengthening is also acknowledged. Implementation strengths include flexible teaching models, student-centered learning, and school autonomy. Challenges include effective teaching hour allocation, adapting to new terminology, and the need for continuous support, especially in English learning. Regarding the Pancasila Students' Profile, teachers appreciate the multifaceted approach to character education, emphasizing practical application over theoretical understanding. The early stages of the P5 program show promise in integrating Pancasila values, yet challenges persist in students' character attitudes and the call for enhanced collaboration.

Abstract

The aims of this research is to describe what are the students’ problems on the use of past participle V3. This research took place in SMK Negeri 1 Suwawa. This research used a qualitative method and took 15 students as the participants in this research. The data collected trhough interview as the main instrument and test as the supporting instrument.The results of this research students make a lot of mistakes in determining past participle and then, the need for educators to adopt effective teaching strategies that address the challenges faced by students when it comes to using past participle. Therefore, it can be concluded that students face challenges when it comes to the use of past participle. By addressing these issues, educators can help students improve their language skills and enhance their academic and professional success. The implementation of effective teaching strategies and resources can help students to gain a better understanding of past participle and develop the skills necessary to use it correctly in various contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the accuracy of students' translations of idiomatic expressions in song lyrics. The Data was collected from 24 students in the 4th semester of the English Department at Gorontalo State University. The song lyrics used for the study were from "Heart Attack" by Demi Lovato. Participants were given 30 minutes to translate the lyrics. The research utilized a qualitative method. Data analysis involved two steps: skimming the translations collected from participants and making notes on the presumed data, followed by identifying and classifying the accuracy of the translations. The study found that the quality of accurate translations was higher than that of inaccurate translations. Specifically, 42% of the translations were accurate, 40% were less accurate, and 18% were inaccurate. This indicates that the overall quality of students' translations of idioms is quite good, likely because some idioms in the song are familiar to them.

Abstract

This study discusses the techniques used in teaching English vocabulary to young learners at MY LIBERTY International English School. The theoretical significance of the research lies in its potential to enhance readers' knowledge about effective teaching techniques for young learners. Additionally, this research can be a reference for future researchers exploring similar topics. The study aims to analyze the techniques employed by instructors in teaching English vocabulary to young learners and to evaluate students' responses to these techniques. A qualitative descriptive methodology was used, with observation sheets and interviews serving as the primary data collection methods. The researcher conducted interviews with three instructors and nine students to supplement the observational data. The results of the study indicate that out of nine identified techniques, eight were actively used by the instructors. These techniques include repetition, the use of pictures, pronunciation drills, modeling/demonstration, providing clues, games, question and answer sessions, and reading aloud. One technique was not observed in the teaching process. Understanding students' responses to these teaching techniques is crucial for instructors as it provides valuable feedback for improving their teaching strategies. The analysis of student responses revealed that out of the nine respondents, seven students had positive reactions, while two students had negative responses.
