Abstract

The nutritional issues faced by the elderly significantly affected the occurrence of non- communicable diseases (degenerative diseases), especially among elderly individuals with obesity. Education and nutrition training played an important role in preventing and managing these conditions through the promotion of balanced nutrition for the elderly. Nutritional education significantly reduced the risk of chronic diseases and increased individual awareness, particularly among the elderly, about the importance of implementing balanced nutrition. The main objective of this community service program was to enhance knowledge about balanced nutrition for the elderly to prevent and manage these conditions at the SMART Elderly School under the Abiyoso Gerontology Foundation in Malang City. The implementation of this community service activity included nutritional education using PowerPoint presentation materials, facilitating Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), conducting anthropometric measurements, and practicing the preparation of balanced nutritional menus for the elderly. Before and after the nutritional education, knowledge assessments regarding balanced nutrition for the elderly were conducted, with paired t-test analysis. The results showed significant data that improved the elderly's understanding of the causes, prevention, and management of non- communicable diseases. Therefore, the importance of regular activities in raising awareness among the elderly about the habit of applying balanced nutrition was highlighted.

Abstract

Introduction: High workload among educational staff may adversely impact mental health, leading to stress, fatigue, and anxiety. In academic settings, particularly in medical faculties, complex task demands often result in psychological pressure. This study is essential to understand whether workload influences the mental health of educational staff at the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (FK UNUSA). Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between workload and mental health (burnout) among educational staff at the FK UNUSA. Methods: This quantitative study employed a survey approach. Data were collected using standardized questionnaires measuring two main variables: workload (NASA-TLX) and burnout (Maslach Burnout Inventory). A total of 21 educational staff members participated. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Spearman Rank correlation test to examine the relationship between the two variables. Results: The findings indicate a significant correlation between workload and mental health (p = 0.016). Educational staff with higher workloads tended to experience burnout. However, at the FK UNUSA, most educational staff reported mild to moderate workloads, while their mental health conditions were generally categorized as low to moderate burnout. Conclusions: A significant relationship exists between workload and burnout among educational staff at the FK UNUSA (p-value = 0.016). Although workload is an important factor, it does not act alone. Other contributing factors, such as social support, emotional stress, and work environment, also play critical roles in determining burnout levels.

Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is the most common pathogen in humans that causes various infections. Variations in infections due to S. aureus are related to the presence of virulence factors, one of which is Toxic Shock Syndrome Toxin-1 (TSST-1) which is the main cause of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). This study aimed to explore the genetic pattern of the tsst-1 genes among MSSA and MRSA from clinical isolates of patients at Dr. Soetomo Academic Hospital, Surabaya-Indonesia. PCR examination was performed on 106 clinical samples of S. aureus isolates to determine the presence of the tsst-1 genes; subsequently, phylogenetic analysis was performed. The positive tsst-1 genes were found in 3 (5.7%) MSSA isolates and 2 (3.8%) MRSA isolates from 106 samples, of which were divided into 53 MSSA isolates and 53 MRSA isolates. No significant difference was noticed between the tsst-1 genes on both the MSSA and MRSA bacteria (p = 0.648). The positive tsst-1 genes were found in 1 (4.5%) of pus specimens and 2 (16.7%) of blood specimens from MSSA isolates. However, the positive tsst-1 genes were found in neither sputum nor urine specimens. The genes were found in 2 (16.7%) of blood specimens from MRSA isolates. Based on the phylogenetic tree, Indonesian tsst-1 isolates belonged to the same clade as Japan, Iran, Iraq, India, Egypt and the United Kingdom isolates. The prevalence of tsst-1 genes of both MSSA and MRSA from clinical isolates in Dr. Soetomo Academic Hospital Surabaya are 5.7% and 3.8%, respectively. The tsst-1 genes of Surabaya-Indonesia, Japan, Iran, Iraq, India, Egypt and the United Kingdom belonged to the same clade.

Abstract

Abstract

Tuberculosis remains a major public health issue in Indonesia, particularly in densely populated environments such as Islamic boarding schools. This community engagement program aimed to improve awareness, early detection, and prevention of tuberculosis through the “Healthy Adolescents Without TB” campaign at Hidayatulloh Al-Muhajirin Islamic Boarding School, Bangkalan. A total of 150 students participated in the activities, which implemented a participatory, faith-based health education model combining contextual learning, tuberculosis screening, and healthy behavior promotion. Interactive education sessions, audiovisual media, and testimonials from TB survivors significantly increased students’ understanding of disease prevention. Screening identified 13 students (8.6%) with chronic cough, 9 (6.0%) with weight loss, and 5 (3.3%) with night sweats, all referred for further evaluation at local health facilities. The integration of Islamic values into health messages enhanced cultural acceptance and motivated sustainable behavioral change. Overall, the program effectively strengthened adolescent health literacy and fostered active community participation, demonstrating that contextual, participatory, and faith-based education can serve as a replicable model to support Indonesia’s tuberculosis elimination strategy.
