Abstract

Learning English as a foreign language in Indonesia is not easy for many students, not only junior and senior high school students but also college/university students. It often makes them unable to be active in the teaching and learning process and have low motivation and false attitudes toward learning English. As a result, they would get low achievement in English. Considering the case, teachers need to think of ways to make students enjoy learning English both inside and outside the classroom. This study aims at elaborating on Facebook as one of the online social media that can be used to attract students’ active engagement in English teaching and learning process. This study employed a literature research methodology (Lin, 2009; vom Brocke et al., 2009) by using qualitative analysis. The findings showed that Facebook, which most people, especially in Indonesia, usually use it only for fun, can also be used as a medium to get students involved in the teaching and learning process. By using Facebook, students are able to participate in learning English whenever and wherever they are. Besides, teachers can monitor, facilitate, and evaluate students' participation by commenting on the student's responses in unlimited space and time. Based on some research findings, Facebook can be used to enhance learning. Finally, Facebook has many benefits for students if it is used and managed well.

Abstract

Teaching materials are crucial in education. They are tools for teachers to facilitate students to learn and improve the interaction of a teacher and students. Teaching materials should fulfill some criteria. One of them is the suitability of the materials to students' needs and interests. This study aims to explore students' perceptions toward teaching materials for the subject of Listening and Speaking for General Purposes. The study employs a mixed method. A questionnaire and an interview were used to gather the comprehensive data. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed using a statistical calculation, while the interview data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The teaching materials were provided by three lecturers from three different classes. The results showed that teaching materials used by D1 and D2 were considered good and beneficial for students, while the one used by D3 was perceived as inappropriate and did not help students improve their listening and speaking skills. Finally, this study recommends improving the teaching materials to meet students' needs and interests.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the challenges faced by students in improving their English listening skills for professional contexts and to identify the strategies they use to overcome these challenges. This study uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method. Eight students who have completed the Listening and Speaking for Professional Purposes course in the English Education Study Program at Jambi University became research participants. Data were collected through semi- structured interviews and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The results show that students face linguistic challenges, including high speaking speed, unfamiliar vocabulary, different accents, excessive use of formal language, and professional jargon. In addition, psychological factors such as anxiety, lack of focus, and stress also affect their listening ability. To overcome these challenges, students develop various adaptive strategies such as audio repetition and speed adjustment, recording and translating foreign vocabulary, overcoming excessive formal language, note-taking and keyword highlighting, emotion management, and adaptation to professional jargon. These findings indicate that effective listening and learning depend not only on linguistic aspects but also on students' ability to recognize challenges and develop appropriate strategies.

Abstract

Finding appropriate teaching materials for listening subjects is not an easy task for lecturers. Therefore, creating video-based teaching materials is one of the solutions. However, the effectiveness of this product is still unknown. This quasi-experimental research aims to determine the effects of using video-based teaching materials on the listening ability of first-semester English students. Samples were taken using the cluster sampling technique, two classes out of 3 existing classes. The control class was treated using only audio media, while the experimental class was treated with audio-visual (video) media. The treatment was conducted for 14 meetings for each class, starting with giving the pre-test and ending with giving the post-test. The results of independent sample t-test calculations revealed that there was no significant difference in the learning outcomes between the control and experimental classes. This is evidenced by the sig. (2-tailed) value, namely 0.855>0.05. However, the range of the pre-test and post-test results between the control and experimental classes is different. The score range for the control class was 17.22, while the score range for the experimental class was 33.05. This shows that the use of video in the experimental class had a higher effect on improving students' listening skills than in the control class, which was only taught with audio materials.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the challenges students face when creating mind maps and to explain the strategies they use to address them. The study employed a descriptive, qualitative method, utilizing semi-structured interviews to collect the data. The participants were selected purposively, with twelve students from an English Study Program at a state university in Jambi who had taken the TEYL course and created mind maps. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The study's findings identified two main themes: The first is related to the students’ challenges in creating mind maps, including being unfamiliar with mind maps, requiring a significant amount of time to create an engaging one, having limited space on the mind map, problems in using devices and applications to create mind maps, and identifying relevant keywords for the material. Meanwhile, the second is related to the strategies the students used in creating mind maps including creating a digital mind map, using a convenient device and a secure application, using visual elements, preparing a plan, grouping the material on the mind map, designing an efficient mind map format, using curved branches, preparing a summary of the material to create the keywords, and searching for many references. These findings provide valuable insights into the practical challenges students encountered in visual learning tasks and highlight their adaptive strategies in overcoming these challenges, reflecting their creativity, resourcefulness, and digital literacy.

Abstract

One of the most important areas of focus in English instruction, especially at higher levels, is the ability to interpret and assess the underlying meanings of written and spoken texts, particularly those that deal with social issues. To help students develop their critical thinking and discourse analysis skills, teachers can include real-world materials like TED Talks in English language instruction. Through a critical discourse lens, this study examines how Melissa Butler's TED Talk, Why You Think You're Ugly, questions prevailing beauty standards. The study focuses on the descriptive and explanatory elements of Fairclough's framework while analyzing the textual elements and social contexts of Butler's discourse. Data were collected from the video transcript and categorized using Hall's beauty framework to emphasize themes such as body size, face traits, skin tone, and hair texture. The findings showed that Butler used rhetorical strategies and personal storytelling to critique linear beauty norms, expose the emotional toll of conformity, and advocate for a more inclusive vision of beauty. Her discourse emerged as a counter-narrative, resisting Eurocentric ideals and affirming cultural identity and self-acceptance. Ultimately, the study underscores the role of discourse in shaping social perceptions and supports the ongoing movement toward equity in beauty representation.

Abstract

Indonesia's hospitality industry has grown over the past decade, increasing demand for English proficiency among hotel staff serving international guests. This systematic literature review synthesizes 7 empirical studies conducted across multiple Indonesian regions (Padang, Sikka, Bandung, Kebumen, and Bali) to examine English language needs of hotel employees from 2018 to early 2025. Using Cooper's seven-stage review framework, studies were selected for relevance to front-office roles, empirical rigor, and alignment with Indonesian hospitality contexts. Results indicate front-line staff prioritize speaking and listening for managing check-in and check-out, explaining services, and resolving complaints, while writing supports email correspondence, reservation forms, and guest documentation. Challenges include limited industry-specific vocabulary, difficulty understanding diverse accents, grammatical inaccuracies in complex exchanges, and low confidence. To mitigate these, employees use reactive strategies like translation apps, code-switching to Indonesian, speech simplification, and contextual inference. Proactive measures include scenario-based role-play exercises, digital ESP modules designed for hospitality contexts, and targeted vocabulary workshops. By systematically consolidating previously fragmented research, this review identifies consistent patterns across geographic contexts and workplace settings, revealing a significant gap between general English instruction and the specialized communicative demands of hotel work. Findings advocate for ESP curricula that integrate authentic hotel materials, simulated guest interactions, and focused vocabulary development. These insights inform educators, ESP curriculum developers, hotel managers, and human resource professionals aiming to enhance service quality and guest satisfaction in Indonesia's tourism sector.
