Abstract

The increasing number of elderly individuals in Indonesia each year is accompanied by a higher prevalence of degenerative diseases, including hypercholesterolemia. However, with advancing age, elderly individuals tend to experience a decline in functional capacity, leading to reduced physical activity. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between physical activity intensity and total cholesterol levels among elderly residents at the Kupang Elderly Social Welfare Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD) in 2025. This analytical study employed a cross-sectional design involving elderly residents of the Kupang Elderly Social Welfare UPTD. Data were examined through both univariate and bivariate analyses employing the Chi-square test with a significance threshold of p < 0.05. A majority of the respondents fell into the young elderly category (60–69 years) and were mostly women. The findings revealed that the greater part of older participants showed low intensity in physical activity while having elevated total cholesterol levels. The Chi-square analysis demonstrated a meaningful connection between the intensity of physical activity and total cholesterol levels (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that a decrease in physical activity intensity correlates with an increase in total cholesterol levels among seniors. A noteworthy relationship exists between physical activity intensity and total cholesterol levels in elderly individuals at Kupang Elderly Social Welfare UPTD. Regular and appropriately tailored physical activity serves as an important strategy to maintain lipid metabolism balance and prevent cardiovascular disease risks in the elderly population.

Abstract

Treatment of Propionibacterium acnes infection can use antibiotics, but the use of antibiotics in the wrong dosage can trigger antibiotic resistance. The development of natural antibacterial research with herbal plant ingredients is one alternative to reduce the incidence of resistance. One of the plants used is star fruit leaf (Averrhoa bilimbi linn). This research aims to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of star fruit leaf (Averrhoa bilimbi linn) against the growth of Propionibacterium acnes. This research used a true experimental design research type with a post-test only control group design. This research used star fruit  leaf extract which is macerated using 70% ethanol solvent and evaporated until a thick extract is obtained. Testing of antibacterial activity using the disc diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer) against the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes. The analysis used is  the One Way Anova statistical test. Star fruit leaf extract contains alkaloid compounds, tannins, saponins, flavonoids, and steroids. The test results show that the average diameter of the inhibition zone formed by each sample was at a concentration of 100% of 17,07 mm, a concentration of 50% of 15,21 mm, a concentration of 25% of 14,16 mm, a concentration of 12,5% of 12,86 mm, a concentration of 6,25% of 12,08 mm, a concentration of 3,125% of 10,58 mm and a concentration of 1,56% of 9,16 mm. Star fruit leaf extract (Averrhoa bilimbi linn) has antibacterial activity against the growth  of Propionibacterium acnes.

Abstract

Staphylococcus epidermidis is a normal flora bacteria on the skin that can cause opportunistic infections. Generally, this infection is treated using antibiotics, but improper use of antibiotics can cause the onset of antibiotic resistance, so the development of natural antibacterial research with plant materials is one of the alternatives to reduce the incidence of resistance. A traditional medicinal plant is the leaves of star fruit (Averrhoa bilimbi Linn). This research aimed to investigate the antibacterial properties of the extract from star fruit leaves on Staphylococcus epidermidis. The type of research used is a true experimental design with a post-test only control group design. The treatment group in this study consisted of concentrations of 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.12%, with a positive control of clindamycin at a dose of 2 μg and a negative control of sterile aquadest which was carried out 3 times for each test group. The antibacterial test method is carried out by the disc diffusion method. The data analysis used is the One Way Anova statistical test. Star fruit leaf extract contains alkaloid compounds, tannins, saponins, flavonoids, and steroids. There is antibacterial activity of star fruit leaf extract against Staphylococcus epidermidis. The inhibition zone was produced at various concentrations of 100% (⌀ 15.14 mm), 50% (⌀ 14.06 mm), 25% (⌀ 13.75 mm), 12.5% (⌀ 12.01 mm), 6.25% (⌀ 10.55 mm), and 3.12% (⌀ 9.03 mm). Starfruit leaf extract has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis.
