Abstract

In the contemporary digital era, the cultivation of children's character encounters substantial challenges, particularly in the context of the erosion of moral and cultural values within society. Moreover, the escalation in youth violence signifies that character education has not been effective in cultivating a noble younger generation. The present study has two objectives. Firstly, it seeks to provide a representation of immoral values in the short story Hikayat Buhlul by Kamel Kilani. Secondly, it will sanalyse these values in shaping the moral knowledge, moral feelings and moral actions of the main characters. This analysis will be based on Thomas Lickona's character education theory. The present study employs a qualitative descriptive method, with primary data derived from the short story Hikayat Buhlul and secondary data from journals, articles, and relevant literature. The data collection techniques employed in this study encompass the reading and note-taking methods. The subsequent data analysis is guided by the Miles and Huberman model, which involves data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that there are four data related to moral knowledge, five data for moral feelings, and five data for moral actions. The present study concludes that children's literature plays a crucial role in shaping children's character through implicit moral messages, with the family environment, especially the role of parents, as the main factor in the internalisation of moral values.

Abstract

The circulation of mass media becomes more extensive in the digital era. It is undeniable that mass media has a vital role in presenting various news topics, including political, economic, and social topics, as well as international conflict issues. Amid a fast and massive flow of information worldwide, the media conveys facts and composes narratives that can influence people's perspectives on reality. International mass media were invigorated by a violent conflict that occurred in the coastal region of Syria, involving Syrian security forces and armed rebels who were strongly suspected of being loyalists of the couped Bashar al-Assad regime. This has become a global public spotlight, especially for countries in the Middle East. Many international mass media have also reported the chronology of the clashes that claimed hundreds of lives from various perspectives. Therefore, this research is important to understand how mass media consciously or unconsciously shape opinions and contribute information through framing techniques. This research aims to analyze framing strategies and identify the news focus of three international mass media that actively report on global issues, including the conflict in Syria, i.e., Al Jazeera, BBC, and CNN. This paper employed the descriptive-qualitative research method with the framing analysis approach based on the model developed by Pan and Kosicki. Data were collected through documentation and note-taking techniques on the three mentioned mass media. The analysis technique was carried out by identifying framing elements, which include four structures; the syntax, script, thematic, and rhetoric structures, in the analyzed news texts. This identification revealed differences and similarities of the three mass media in preparing news. The results of this study show that in presenting the same issue, each media outlet uses different framing strategies. However, in some structures, there are similarities in the use of common terms. This difference in framing impacts the construction of meaning that is conveyed to readers. This finding is crucial as it shows that framing is not only an editorial strategy but also a powerful tool to shape public insights and opinions. This research contributes to the study of applied linguistics and communication in understanding how language is used as a bridge in interpreting a news discourse as public information media.

Abstract

The phenomenon of introverted personality represents a significant area of inquiry in both psychology and literary studies, as it captures the complexity of individuals characterized by introspection and emotional sensitivity. In Matt Haig’s The Midnight Library, the protagonist Nora Seed embodies introverted tendencies through her inner conflicts and existential pursuit of meaning. This study aims to examine the representation of Nora Seed’s introverted personality by employing Carl Gustav Jung’s psychological typology, with a specific focus on the four primary functions: thinking, feeling, sensing, and intuition. Jung’s framework is employed in this analysis because it offers a comprehensive theoretical lens for understanding the internal dynamics of literary characters, in contrast to other psychological approaches that predominantly emphasize observable behavior. Methodologically, this research adopts a qualitative descriptive-analytical design, involving close reading, systematic note-taking, and thematic coding of relevant textual evidence from the novel. The findings demonstrate that Nora exhibits all four introverted functions: a proclivity for logical reflection prior to action (thinking), the deep and nuanced processing of emotions (feeling), heightened attentiveness to sensory detail (sensing), and the interpretation of lived experiences through symbolic and abstract possibilities (intuition). The study concludes that Nora Seed represents the individuation process of an introverted subject, a portrayal that not only advances psychological literary criticism but also contributes to broader scholarly discourse on mental health and self-acceptance within contemporary society.

Abstract

This study examines the discourse of sexual violence and gender inequality against Palestinian women in the Palestine–Israel conflict using Sara Mills’ Critical Discourse Analysis approach. It aims to reveal how women’s positions are represented in Arabic online media Al Arabiya, Al Jazeera, and CNN Arabic. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method, analyzing ten news texts based on four key elements of Mills’ framework: the subject, object, writer, and reader positions. The findings show that Palestinian women experience multiple layers of oppression. They are victims of sexual violence, harassment, humiliation, and murder by Israeli forces, while also facing structural inequality such as limited access to reproductive health and basic needs. Al Arabiya portrays women as powerless victims, Al Jazeera provides space for women to speak as active subjects, while CNN Arabic presents their suffering collectively but often conceals the perpetrators through passive constructions. These findings highlight that the Palestine Israel conflict is not merely political or military but also a gendered media issue, where women are symbolized as powerless sufferers. Thus, media discourse plays a crucial role in shaping public awareness of justice and gender equality for Palestinian women.
